  1. Thanks! This is what I needed. I had hoped there was an easier way to do it. I ride two up on this bike most of the time. Fork dive is what I am trying to resolve. I may go for the 12w oil. I was also a little confused about the lowering of the forks statement as well. Perhaps I just push up on them and insert the screw ?
  2. I am interested in changing the fork oil on my 2007 RSV. The bike has about 15k miles on it and its never been done. I have never changed fork oil on anything except dirt bikes in the past. What is the basic process for changing the fork oil on the RSV? Does the fairing have to come off ? Do have to jack the bike up and pull the fork tubes ? or can I just drain it some magic way and pour oil in the top ? Also, has anyone used a higher (or lower) weight oil for more (or less) rebound damping ? Synthetic ? Any tips would be appreciated.
  3. After checking out a few batteries in person, I went with the Yuasa. However, I was not able to get my hands on a DEKA. I chose the Yuasa because the terminals appeared more robust than either the Everstart or the Autozone version. Also, I believe Yuasa makes the Interstate battery. Thanks for all the replies.

  6. Well, the battery for my 2007 RSV has died. When I mean died I mean it has 2.5 volts and wont even light an LED after charging for 3 days on a battery tender. I'm not 100% sure how that happened in 2 weeks ... unless "not me" or "nobody" or " i don't know" turned the key on. I'm reasonably certain it was the same magical beings that made a mark on the ceiling and broke a lamp ... but I digress. What is the best (and when I say best I mean longest lasting best fitting) battery for the RSV ? Should I go cheap and go to Wally World and buy a neverstart ? go midway and buy the Yuasa? or should I spend my kids college fund and get the Lithium Highzoot fluxcapacitor ver$ion? I know battery technology has changed quite a bit in the last few years. I read so much on the internet about this and that kind of battery. Lead acid .. Glass mat .. Lithium I don't want to buy any special chargers or anything like that. If it wont live on a good ole battery tender then it's not for me. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  8. A 300 HP bike is a young man's motorcycle! I rode a modified 200 HP Honda CBRR ... one time. I think about that ride right after I wake up in a cold sweat. I couldn't imagine any more HP's on a bike. I'll stick with RSV's thank you.
  9. I've had good luck with motorcycletire.com. I've bought 3 complete sets and 3 back tires from them. Never an issue.
  10. I had a local upholsterer remove the original top cover and install 2 layers of upholstery foam and re staple the seat. Cost $50 USD. It feels MUCH better now. Before this mod I used a sheepskin cover with a gel pad.
  11. If you do pull the shaft out, buy a seal. Don't even think of using the old one. You might get lucky, but I have been unlucky twice so far. Also, my 2007 RSV has oil holes for the splines. I clean them with wire each time I destroy the seal .. errr replace the tire
  12. not to knock on Yamaha, but from a tall dudes perspective, check out the Victory Vision or Victory Cross Tour. They have been the roomiest bikes I have ever rode. I just cant swing the $$$ for one right now. Super comfortable. Super roomy.
  13. I am 6' 5'' and had similar issues. However, after reviewing all the alternatives I placed highway pegs low and at an angle so I could rest the backs of my feet on the boards and the tops of my feet on the pegs. My thoughts were if I can't move my feet down, I'm going to move them out. It does increase wind buffeting but is a great way to stretch out on long rides. I also reworked the seat and liked the results of that very much. The price was also very reasonable and I gained about an inch in seat to board clearance. I still have some of the sitting "in" not on sensation but I have to admit it is a bit less now. However, I know you don't want to do that, but I wouldn't totally rule it out. I would think lowering the boards would create some airflow issues as well as some brake and shifter issues too. Maybe some one else has tried it before ?
  14. I use a cheap $75 dollar backrest I bought off of Ebay. While it is better than no backrest its by far not the best or most comfortable. I had to mount the pad upside down to get it to feel right on my back. It does not push me too far forward but the pad is a bit small. I have ridden with it for 2 years and 16K miles. If money is tight its a good alternative. If you can afford better, I would. Just my 2 cents
  15. My advice is to buy a sturdy bike stand (unless you already have one)_ and buy the jack adapter for it. I believe a member sells those on here. Also, read, read , read. The tech forum is absolutely awesome and has helped me through several maintenance jobs.
  16. I have an 2007 as well. Bought the bike with about 7200 miles on it. I now have about 15k after a year. The whine has stayed the same pretty much. Heck I rode it 250 miles... changed the oil to from Mobile synthetic to Yamalube Dino oil in mid-ride and got back on it. Whine still about the same. Maybe ... a little less with Dino oil and that is a slight maybe Would I buy another ? sure. Its a rock solid platform. Besides, after spending truckloads of money on bikes. I have discovered they do not make the perfect bike. They all have some sort of issue.
  17. My roommate had an XS1100 when I was in school in the late '80's. We beat on that bike unmercifully and it never broke. Our misspent Saturday evenings almost always involved a burnout contest to see who could lay the longest single black stripe with it. I can say first hand it is a tough bike. It was pretty quick too. At the time nothing but a GS1100 could touch it. (according to our personal research )

  19. 2) Drive the posted speed limits, they (except for the speed trap small towns) are set for a reason. Everything I have read so far have been really great points. For me ... Speed limit is THE main factor. The way I look at it is the slower I go the longer I have to react. Besides if I go faster I just have to get off the bike sooner. I'm not saying become a moving chicane. I'm saying don't feel embarrassed about doing the speed limit and hanging back a little.
  20. My buddy uses the J&M setup. It is pricey but it works reasonably well. We have been caught in the rain several times and have had no issues. The sound starts fading out about 65 MPH. Then again what sound system doesn't ?
  21. Yes what he said. I used polarized shooters glasses. They help in fog too and are impact resistant.
  22. yeah what he said. Especially this part "Great for folks who wear glasses". Also, for those with big ears. (thanks Dad for the awesome genetics!) I have 6 helmets .. I use one. The HJC. Others make my glasses stab into my skull after about an hour.

I use moly grease from these guys. http://www.guarddogmoly.com/ I was given the tip from my friends who are into Honda Valkyrie's and are dedicated to the restoration and preservation of those bikes. It seems Valks are really tough on rear drives. High horsepower and age contribute I'm sure. Try the GD 570 (73% Moly) from Guard dog. It is expensive. It is also hard to clean off of just about anything. However, it works. The Honda guys swear by it. I've had good luck with it. A few tips I have been taught. Clean the spline well before lubing them. Moly doesn't stick to grease well. Rub the Moly "into" the metal. Kind of like polishing it. Cleanliness is the key. Make darn sure that tire and wheel are free of sand etc. Use compressed air and clean the areas as well as possible.
  24. Lower fairing extenders ? Where do I get those and where do they attach ? I think that may resolve a complaint I'm having with my passenger.
  25. Check the weight on the modular helmets. Some are much more heavy than regular helmets. I have two Scorpions and I get neck aches on long rides.
