cruiserfan Posted September 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2007 I had been looking at several LED lights to replace the stock reflector between the license plate and tail light. Most of what I found was in the area of $25 and $40. I thought that was a bit much. Well, yesterday, I was at Bass Pro Shops and found what I was looking for in the area of the boat trailer supply area. It is an LED clearance/marker light about 1/2 inch shorter than the reflector. I had to elongate the holes in the reflector mounting bracket to get it installed but it took about 10 minutes total to do the whole thing. I wired it into the brake light so it only comes on when the brake is activated. The best part was it only cost $9.99!! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Made by Unified Marine, Inc. http://unifiedmarine.net/cgi-bin/htmlos.exe/003.1.119223303900003196 Part number 50023840 Photo 1 is light off. Photo 2 is brake applied and light on. I have to say that this light is at least 50 times brighter than original and plugs into the stock bulb outlet. I love it. I also used Radiantz turn signal LED's and they are even brighter with the clear lenses. I have the same setup and the rear is bright enough the people behind me need shades when I hit the brakes. The brake board is a 5 minute job. Signals take a bit more time but are well worth it. The LED boards have dropped to some $60 shipped. I spent $130 on my 1st one 3 years ago and still felt it was money well spent. When I picked up this bike I immediately went after the LED board and was giddy to find out the price had dropped for such a great product. The board has 3 white LED lights pointing up to illuminate the license plate. Spend the bucks. The rear of our scoot is horribly dark. The LED on run is as bright or brighter than the 1157 bulb on brake. On brake the LED board is AMAZINGLY BRIGHT! Do it. Buy it. Get it. I guarantee you get behind her at night and have someone pull the brake for you to look at it and you'll be asking why you didn't get one sooner. If you want an LED tail light, go with Radiantz. The LED board plugs into the existing socket that you bulb goes into and is 100 times brighter. Go to http://www.radiantz.com/ and click on led motorcycle tail lights then click on Yamaha. The RSTD, Venture and Roadstar all have the same tail light. You cant beat the price, either!! Steve S Posted October 4, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 4, 2007 I purchased a stop/run LED from Custom Dynamics, www.customdynamics.com , to replace the reflector over my tail light. It is the Knight Ryder sequential light bar. The LEDs run from one side to the other in run, then flashes 5 or 6 times when you hit the brakes before burning steady. It is a very bright light and for $27 I thought it was a good buy. They also have a non-sequential light bar as well. They also have the LED boards for the tail light. It is such an improvement over a light bulb that several of my friends have gone to using them as well. I have bought several lights from Custom Dynamics and have been more than pleased with both the product and the service. I do cheat though. I order everything through our local Yahama dealer so I dont have to pay the freight. Next on the list are the LED turn signals:thumbsup2:. I have the Kuryakyn controller on my bike. The brake lights flash 3 times when the brakes are applied and then stay on solid. They now have direct wire harnesses so you don't have to splice stuff together anymore. I have the old splice system but it was still pretty easy. Tail light: http://www.radiantz.com/c12.html Turn signals: http://www.radiantz.com/c32.html Something I discovered when I tried to use the Radiantz tailight LED, and then wire in a Modulite trailer adapter, is that the Modulite is expecting to see a normal brake light load, and wont send the correct signals to my trailer lighting. After an hour of troubleshooting my wiring, and convinced I had everything wired correctly, I finally tried putting the standard 1157 back in the socket, and voila! the modulite and trailer wiring worked perfectly! I have put aside the radiantz LED board and now I'm using a license plate frame with two LED light bars on it. I noticed that the standard Yamaha brake lite has no real reflector for the bulb, so the light is not focused to the rear, and thats the reason its not very bright, plus, the red plastic is not the higher optical quality used on other vehicles. When I had the radiantz board in the housing, it made a HUGE difference in rear visibility, and I was able to confirm this while riding behind my bike when a friend and I swapped rides for a few miles one night. So....I'm wondering now if I should find a way to wire in a seperate stop light, using a standard incandesent bulb, and still retain the radiantz unit. I could use a load equalizer, but I figure, if I'm gonna burn a couple of amps in an equalizer, why not just do it in an extra stop light bulb instead.
