big dude Posted June 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 12, 2009 today being stupid I was hammering my 1st gen shifting to 2nd ( missed shift) and lot of grinding started bottom left of engine. right where driveshaft goes to out put shaft, no matter what gear. limped home last 5 miles. the more throttle the more grind. grinds when under even slite pressure. put it on center stand all gears grind. what did i do? going to start pulling wheel off and pull drive shaft what am i looking for. big time sick at my stomach
Dano Posted June 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2009 Possibly stripped the driveshaft at the u-joint, another possibility is that you stripped the middle gear. If the driveshaft is OK, then you'll have to remove the swingarm to check the middle gear. If you're not sure nor if you have the tools to do that, load it up and bring it up here to the house and I'll help ya. I'm just off I-74 at exit 101 (Pleasant View). I'll be around Sunday or at nite during the week. Dan

Like I previously, found on mine.
DragonRider Posted June 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 13, 2009 (edited) Sounds like your pinion gear, that is the gear that has the u joint attached to it. I had the same thing happen to mine, I was lucky, it was really chewed up, but the gear it meshed with was fine......not a hard fix, a lot easier than pulling the motor and replacing the tranny gears. I think I have some pics of it someplace, I will see if I can find them. Edited June 13, 2009 by DragonRider

mini-muffin Posted June 13, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 13, 2009 Ok here's the pics muffinman took. As you discussed make sure all edges are square and that the drive shaft doesn't come apart like you talked about. Give him a call if you get into any problems or need parts. Dragonslayer Posted June 16, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 16, 2009 Depending on what you find wrong I've got the parts you may need. Middle gears, U-joints and drive shaft. I just replaced my pumpkin the old one outward splines are worn but not shot. May get you by for a while.
Dano Posted June 16, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 16, 2009 We're checking into the possibility of clutch bearing or something in that area, but we'll let you know. Thanks for the offer Bob. Middle gear is excellent, u-joint perfect. Dan
ChurchBuilder Posted June 18, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 18, 2009 Sounds like the middle gear. Try pulling your swing arm off, pull out the U joint and look inside. You may see the middle gear or driven cam is broken. If so, you will need to pull the engine and split the case to repair.
Dano Posted June 25, 2009 Share #14 Posted June 25, 2009 Turns out it is the driven cam, split right down the middle. Should have rotated it around first before looking elsewhere.
Venturous Randy Posted June 25, 2009 Share #15 Posted June 25, 2009 Turns out it is the driven cam, split right down the middle. Should have rotated it around first before looking elsewhere. OK, I am confused, are you talking about the gear that goes to the timing chain? I am not sure what a driven cam is. And, thanks for the update. Dano Posted June 25, 2009 Share #16 Posted June 25, 2009 Sorry Randy, should have said damper cam, right behind the middle pinion gear in the case. Dan

Dano Posted June 27, 2009 Share #21 Posted June 27, 2009 I always thought these damper cams were supposed to rotate around separately from the pinion gear in case of undue stress on the final driveline. I guess that proves this theory wrong! These pics were taken from outside the case, looking in where the u-joint/output pinion gear go into the case at the back left corner of the motor in case anyone was wondering. Squeeze Posted June 27, 2009 Share #22 Posted June 27, 2009 I always thought these damper cams were supposed to rotate around separately from the pinion gear in case of undue stress on the final driveline. I guess that proves this theory wrong! .. Dan Usually, this Thing is working like it should. I think the Splines between the "Driven Cam" and the Tranny Putput Shaft are worn out to a Point where a sharp Operation on the Throttle or the from the rear Wheel (like locking) doesn't allow the "Driven Cam" to slip towards the Clutch Side. If there is no Slippage, the Cam can't uncouple the Forces and therefore something has to give up. In this Case, it was the "Driven Cam". I never saw such a Damage before. Even if you'd manage to pull the Tranny Shaft to left and Unlock the thrust Washer some how, you won't get the angled Gear out through the big Bearing Hole. You need to dismount the Engine and split the Case. NOT FUNNY, as you know !! I'm sorry for being the Bearer of bad News, but in the End you can't polish S..t. ChurchBuilder Posted June 28, 2009 Share #23 Posted June 28, 2009 You will definately need to split the case to get to the middle gear. I bought my parts from Ron Ayers but you may be able to find them cheaper somewhere else. There is a great thread ion here somewhere about doing the second gear fix. It's the same procedure. Dano Posted June 28, 2009 Share #24 Posted June 28, 2009 Thanks Churchbuilder. Got parts ordered already, they're on the way. I tore mine apart last year for second gear fix, so this is a no brainer. "Preciate the reply, tho. Dan
