Guest Popeye Posted September 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2007 We went for a short ride yesterday & 86 VR quit in the middle of the street. Idled it into a lot & removed LH fairing, where I saw my throttle cable, broke in two about 2 inches from the idle screw. Towed home. The metal curved shroud & spacers were balancing in place & I saved them. I've looked-up the info on this fix & it looks like a nightmare. One end moves with the carb linkage [finger] & the other moves with the throttle. Which of the 4 cables is this? What is involved in fixing this? Thanks in advance for any info. GeorgeS Posted September 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 30, 2007 To replace cables, You have to remove the left side upper fairing, only way to get to the cable joint as shown in the above photos, from the manual. I did mine about 6 months ago, the 4 new cables were about $40.00. Most of the job is getting the fairing removed, and re installed. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Spoke to some techs in the area & they say it's a 2 hr job....IF you know what you're doing. [doesn't] Everyone agrees the faring [off/on] is the lion's share of the work. Only 38k miles & steel cable broke, at curve in tubing...a serious design flaw, there, it seems. The rest of the cable looks like brand spankin' new. The push-pull cable from the grip runs down to the throttle cable housing mounted on the left frame rail under the left upper fairing shell to a "transfer box" AND there is also attached the actuator cable for the cruise control coming out the bottom. . Coming out the rear of that box is the second pair of push-pull cables to the carb. So: Now you have to pull the left side fairing off to get to this "junction box". You might as well replace the entire set of 4 throttle cables? Order All 4 of the Cables. a quick check... 41V-26311-00-00 Cable #1---- $9.58 41V-26312-00-00 Cable #2----$10.44 41V-26313-01-00 Cable #3---- $11.72 41V-2631J-00-00 Cable #4---- $9.58 Page 3-83 of the service manual describes cable replacement in the throttle cable housing... installing each cable in the hole that's marked on the cable "spool" inside. I'm into it for $40 (including returns) in shipping and nothing accomplished. And their customer service lines are overloaded. And the live chat is shut down due to overload. But I may cheap out and just get the one cable. The rest look good as new...lol I'll check em again before I buy. But it wasn't as bad as I thought to get at the cable box.
