I remember reading an article years ago when Hector was a pup, that the thing to do was to enlarge and polish the intake ports not only on the heads and on the intake manifold. If I remember correctly what happened was they found out that the roughness of the manifold and intake contributed greatly to causing a turbulence for the inductance of fuel and broke up the air/fuel mixture caused better burning of the mixture. When they polished the runners they eliminated the turbulence and reduced the burning properties.
