  1. I messaged with Skydoc, tool is out on loan right now and I'm going to daughters for a few weeks to hopefully help out with grandkids, dad's there too but with a 2yr old and fresh twins they have their hands full so I'll check back with him when I return. For fun I'd called a couple dealers on the shim tool, one didn't get back the other said they could order it @ $132. ow! K&L had said their outta stock one sold for $87 or so.
  2. It's hard to believe these tools have dried up with all the interest in them, there had to be a ton of these motors produced, a lot of which are still in use. [ although a few years ago when I stopped at a dealership looking for a part the parts man wasn't as old as my bike and didn't have a clue what I was talking about], but these motors were used in other apps not just the Venture. The patent on these has to have expired by now, from what I've read 20yrs and they expire with no renewal. Hard plastic may work but the area on the bucket it would push is so narrow I would be afraid of them chipping, but nice thought.
  3. I messaged K&L and they said they were out of stock til middle of Oct. I'll try a couple more dealers. Thanks
  4. Thanks Marcarl. I guess I should have used the common name, shim tool or valve adjusting tool, sorry.
  5. But....I thought I'd check the valves on my '83 so it's apart in the garage, and I didn't realize how hard it was going to be coming up with a bucket tool. Local Yamaha dealer was no help and nothing in my Google search.
  6. If you happen to notice a wobble in a high speed turn, one you lay into, I found a long time ago that running too many miles in a straight line [along with a little throttle up and braking] will square off your tire leaving a lip that you wobble over in a turn, so your constantly fitting this square edge in a corner. just a thought
  7. can you throttle up a bit to keep it running, when does it smooth out?
  8. Found a salvage yard here in Mi. with 2 boxes, I rode over today and the first one I tried was off another '83, no good, 2nd was off an '84, miss was gone, rerouted vacuum lines and rode home. THANKS, for all the help here!
  9. Thanks, guys, at least I have a few more options searching for another TCI.
  10. Is an '83 TCI box the only box you can use on an '83 VR? Without going to an after-market.
  11. I think your right MG, I think tomorrow I'll pull it and check it out
  12. new day, a little more awake, ohm reading at the plug on frame going TO the pick up coils is from 123.3 to 125.6, going from same plug towards tci those read in the 600 ohm range today, I did mess up tho, it does miss when it's cold , sorry, but the rpm when it starts picking back up is a little higher a little closer to 3000.
  13. Ya, runs great except between 2000 and 2500. I grounded plugs on the cases, one cyl at a time, and no spark on 1 & 3 between this rpm range
  14. Well I pulled the plug caps apart and removed the resistor, cleaned the insides, and replaced with copper wire. pulled the connectors off the TCI and cleaned em, checked plugs with ohm meter [like I knew what I was doing ha!] I don't remember what the reading were but they were the same, checked the plug on the left side of the frame rail-unhooked going to TCI it read 540 ohms except the w/g 512 ohms, going towards pick up coils there was no resistance, o. So with what I could find to clean I did, fired it up, warmed it still #1 & #3 are dead between 2000 RPM and 2500.? I really hate to just start throwing parts at it and try to hit something, really was hoping it was the resistors in the plug caps, any ideas?
  15. Thanks guys, new plugs were installed first thing this spring, tomorrow I'll catch the connections. thanks again.
  16. it seems like in the past couple of days i've come across how to test a TCI but, dang can't find anything now. could someone take me by the hand and lead me there? please./
  17. My cord that comes from the radio back to the drivers? headset is bad where do I look for a new one? It's one of those 5 pin jobs with a 90 on one end
  18. I've got my low speed miss narrowed down to this; idles good, slowly take the throttle up and miss gets real noticeable at about 2000 rpm and at 2500 [by the tach] it clears right up and is gone. By pulling plug wires one at a time and grounding an old plug in the wire I found that cyls.. #1 and #3 both lost spark at 2000 and came back at 2500. Any ideas on this?
  19. Thanks, I checked the spark and it's yellow not blue, but they all were the same so I figured it was ok, maybe I figured wrong.
  20. I've got an '83 that seems to run great when cold, but once it warms up it seems to drop a cyl.until you hit about 2500, then runs good, it seems to idle fine too. I've replaced the plugs and diaphragms. years ago I had a similar problem [i think] and it had a bad diaphragm. stumped now, think it might be valve adj? or electrical? If I just rev it up it sounds good, but on the road it doesn't matter how much I wash it, it looks like dung under 2500
