  1. I've heard that too... No experience to prove or disprove it, but that;s why I stick with organic....
  2. $400 dollar total??? Clean R1's can be had for around $50-$60 dollars on eBay. FA252 pads are going to cost you another $50 bucks. DOT 4... $5-$10 bucks. Labor... free. Should only cost around $125. A very big bang for the buck.... :-)
  3. In my case the 1890 qualifies as a C&R and can be sold or shipped person to person. I have an FFL3, and can deal in only C&R 'stuff'. More for collecting, and not making a biz out of it... A rifle over 50 years old qualifies as a C&R. A pistol is another animal. Even if it's a C&R it still has to go through an FFL1 dealer, and they have to process it PPT ( person to person transfer) and submit the paper work. Plus a 10 day waiting period is in effect. A private party can not sell or ship any gun except Black Powder which is exempt from everything. There are other restrictions that vary from state to state. There are some states that are very lenient, and only follow federal laws, and there are others...ala California... that are tighter than a frogs a$$. Shoot a bb gun here, and it's the same as pulling the trigger on a 9mm semi-auto. Pretty soon it'll be sling shots.... So you have to deal with federal as well as state laws. It's a PITA, and discussions go on for hours as to what you can do and what you can't.
  4. Most of the military snipers prefer 338 Lapua. There's also a 338 Edge, and of course the 338RUM..remington ultra mag... The Lapua seems to be the buzz caliber... geeze had to type that three times before I stopped typing caliper.... The reason I went with the RUM is the 360ea. custom manufactured rounds I picked up at auction. The added bonus is all the reloading components that came along with this rifle. I actually don't own it yet, but will pick it up in the morning, and it is a done deal. The 1890 is being delivered via USPS tomorrow also. What a day it's going to be.... :-)
  5. Holy Rat Feathers!!!!! Dats a lotta BB guns..... I bow to your higher authority Puc.... I do have a few Benjamin's and Crossman's floating around that I've picked up in auctions over the years, but you've cornered the market. I do have one 22 pellet rifle that doesn't have any brand on it other than a warning label stuck to the side of the stock that warns can cause serious injury up to 300 yards, and made in China. Pull the trigger on that baby and it sounds like a 22 going off. I've never shot it, but I can imagine. MOF you can't legally shoot anything within the county any longer. Not even a BB gun.... But that doesn't stop me... I live for danger!! :-)
  6. It's a model LSS 700 Remington.. I've always been partial to 700's all in 7mm Mag. This one in 338RUM is my first departure. The Scope is a Weaver 3-10. Not sure about the quality?? It may be pretty good. Back in the day Weavers were el-Cheepos, but you never can tell what's happened in the last 40 years. I remember when Ray-Bans sold for a couple of bucks on one of those rotating drugstore displays... :-) The LSS's, as far as I can figure, all come with those laminated stocks. Some brown tan..some blue gray. It is kinda cool.. It's an all Stainless gun, and only had 20-30 rounds thru it. On the Win 1890 is kinda cool to think about where it's been for the last 125 years. The stories it could tell. I already have one of the later model 62A's, and have the possibility of picking up another 1890 locally. The one on this 90 is marked short only, but has a Long Rifle loading port. I'd be concerned except the local is the same way. Some were short only and labeled Gallery. Big bucks.
  7. I've just gotten back into it the last 3-4 years. Used to be in the industry back in my late 20's early 30's. Maybe I'm going thru my second childhood?? I had a friend and co-worker, Tom Garrigus, that used to shoot international trap for the AF back in the 60's. Silver medal in Mexico'68. Tom past on a few years ago, but his son is on the PGA Pro Tour . I see him on TV every once in a while.
  8. So I've been bored lately, and needed something new to spice things up a bit. I ran into this auction that had a bunch of ammo listed. Trouble was the pick up was 175 miles one way. But what the 'H' if I play my cards right it's do-able. To make things work I had to get a couple of very expensive calibers first and then bid on some other minor stuff once I was committed to take the trip, and it worked out that way.... The two high end lots were 180 rnds of 338 Remington Ultra Mag ea.. This stuff retails for $4 bucks a round. So for 360 round,s at $250 bucks, the heck with the cost of gas. A few more lots fell my way to sweeten the pot. I had intentions of selling some of the stuff, and finding something to shoot it in with the other. A month passed with no luck. Then I ran into this for the 338. The second pics is of an 1890 Winchester pump I found the same day. I collect guns too.... Anyway I'm not bored any more.
  9. What I've done in the past on a 1stGen is stick a hose in the filler and open the drain on the water pump. Fire up the motor and regulate the inflow to the out flow. Let it runs for about 15 minutes and all the old coolant is gone..... Turn off the engine, turn off the hose, and let the clean water drain out. Fill with new coolant. However.... on a second gen it would be a PITA doing it this way. IT can be done, but the tank would need to be slid back to get to the radiator cap, and opening the drain on the pump takes a bit of McGuivering.... Using air to evacuate the old stuff is scarry. You could end up blowing the seals in the water pump and you don't want to do that.
  10. Sorry to see that happen, but.... thanks for the great pic of the baffle inside. That's the one that needs to be refolded to keep the dash light from blinking saying the fluid is low. What happens is when extended it holds the sensor float down and sets off the warning light. I usually go in there with a piece of L shaped coat hanger to lift it up. Not perfect but will get a couple of folds...folded.... and get rid of the light.... I used to take aluminum parts over to a guy that welded aluminum. It might be a way to go if finding one gets to be to difficult. Weld it and chase the threads with a tap...
  11. That was Shasta Puc.... When I crossed over it on the way back from Yreka last summer it was almost empty, and that baby holds a bunch of liquid sunshine... :-)
  12. It's getting there. Back in the late 60's I went through there on the way to Reno and the snow was piled up 16' on both sides and leaving only one lane open.
  13. The last drought in 74 they dumped all the water out of our local dam getting it ready for the spring run off. Trouble was there wasn't any snow in the Sierras to run off. In '75 we had another dry beginning of the winter and we were really 'up the tree'. Then along came the March Miracle and it rained for the whole month. All was good again. Looks like the Miracle has return. :rain2:
  14. All good advice.... One last thing. Check to see if the expansion hole located at the bottom of the reserve is plugged.... just because... Due to the location of the slave a plugged expansion will cause the clutch to slip as the engine heats up. More so in high gears when passing. In @phonetrouble's case, with the creeping at a stop, it probably isn't the issue.
  15. Some members think it's a good idea, but I stayed with the OEM and didn't have any issues.... I also kept the original lines, but would have swapped them out if I had found something on eBay.... I did find braided lines...twice, but both sets didn't fit. Haven't got a clue what they will fit. The seller gave me a full refund and told me not to bother sending them back. Galfers just wanted too much. Leave the rear brake alone. No need to mess with it other than bleeding and re-padding. It's already a 4 piston.
  16. Is the 310mm for the R1 4 or 6?? The chart I posted is for the 6.
  17. Yep, that's what I did... Same preload and all... Pull 'm out and put 'm in.... Marilyn is a great name. Hard to beat Norma Jean......
  18. Must be an optical... It looks like one and three pistons are sitting over the scrapper lip and the #2 center is where it should be... I just did a quick google and the rotors for the 6 piston caliper are larger at 339.8mm The OEM Venture are 298.
  19. With the increase of the braking of the R1's you're gonna like what you get.
  20. Sounds like a plan.... Now all I have to do is find the bracket.... Besides the one hanging in the garage I have a N_I_B floating around here somewhere.
  21. When they were in biz they made a ton of them and they show up on eBay all the time.... You just have to be patient...it'll show up eventually.. VENTURE HOPNEL
  22. That looks great. Maybe some day I'll give it a try.....
  23. I've found several tank bibs on eBay. You can actually get one with out the studs and add them yourself. Hopnel I one maker, and I think Venture line put out one out with the two pockets. I can also recommend Nanci at Ace Hi. It might be pricier, but the quality is hard to beat...
