  1. Forgot to add. I was told the stock rods would handle the 18 psi. Decision to go with the A beams was mostly due to availability and better bushings.
  2. The plan for the engine is to use JE 8.5:1 forged piston and Carillo A-beam rods and vmax flywheel. Should be able to use the whole vmax rev band with the setup. According to John at PCW 18psi should be safe and beyond that no matter what I do I'll start breaking things. Beyond that I'll be getting heavier valve springs, o-rings on the cylinder sleeves and copper head gasket. With the weather progress has been slow. I did pick up another 87 Venture Royale to use for donor parts.
  3. Bought this one for my wife almost 2 years ago and it's been great. I've stolen it for many projects. Plenty of torque to drive 3" deck screws in a pinch when the impact driver wont fit into the space. Great battery life. The gyro feature took a minute to get used to but is great especially in tight spots.
  4. Yes those were the oval pistons. 8 valves per cylinder. Two connecting rods per piston. Basically mini V8s. They also had a 6 cylinder 2 stroke screamer back in the late 60's. The RC166 I think. 250cc and almost 70hp. 20,000+ rpm with pistons the size of a wine cork.
  5. The old NR500s were in the 20,000 rpm ranges and the NR750 endurance bikes were just shy of that.
  6. Dropped the RSV block and Vmax heads off at PCW for building. Now to finish up ordering parts to fabricate the turbo manifold and intake piping.
  7. Being in a rather populated area with a long riding season I've always been surprised at the lack of motorcycles on the road. The drivers/traffic are notoriously "bad" but even more so I have never set foot in a dealership that I've felt welcomed in. Even just to buy parts or for service. They are all crowded with bikes with giant signs that say don't touch. As a rider it's intimidating to even ask about checking out a bike. I'm always "in the market" if the salesman is good. Or at least they should everyone as an opportunity to make a good impression on a potential future customer. I cant imagine that a would be future rider feels any better. Especially when they show up because they are interested. Many dont have friends or family who ride so they come to the one place they think they are going to meet motorcycle "enthusiast" the dealership. Then they are greated by less than ensthusiastic salesman who would rather try and sell a new vike to the guy who just dropped his off for service then to explain where the next Motorcycle Safety Course is being offered. I would love to see a dealership offering courses on site or nearby for interested buyers and offer it for free with purchase. Some kind of welcoming gesture. The only dealership around here that does it is the HD guys but they charge an extra $40 on top of the normal course fee. Oh yeah an they sell a ton of motorcycles. I hear them plenty but they never seem to catch up. Just sitting there behind me making a ruckus going nowhere fast. The age of the salesman is dying. People are numb due to the likes of telemarketers and beggers on every corner and most salesman I come across would rather be a vulture that swoops in after you've already made up your mind and the bell on the counter has woken them up.
  8. Got it. Thanks for all the help. The linkage shifted first time with the alignment dowels I jammed it up due to my misunderstanding of orientation. The alignment dowels helped.
  9. To add: With most of the subscription services Pandora/Spotify it allows you to download on WiFi and play later to cut down on network data usage.
  10. Thank you for the replies. I'll be grabbing some long bolts tomorrow after work. I'll have to redo the silicone on the rubber since it's now hardening out of place. I'll let you know how it works out.
  11. Just replaced my starter clutch and I'm having a hard time reinstalling the cover. Seems that magnet is so strong I can't get everything lined up right. Any helpful tips? I've removed and inspected for any fouling and don't see anything. It just seems to get stuck to the magnetic flywheel and will hardly budge.
  12. Looks awesome. If the bike doesn't grow on you you've definitely got some sweat equity come spring time.
  13. +1 for Pandora. I've really enjoyed it over the years. The subscribed service is excellent. A lot of my friends are using Spotify and they have a family membership that allows use on up to 6 devices I believe. It is also good. Basically any song/album/artist you want you can listen to and the algorithms have gotten really good for finding new/different artists.
  14. Figured I'd throw in a few pictures of its current state. Just ordered Wastgate/BOV and turbine flanges last night. Need to get an order in for the intercooler and intake/exhaust piping so I can start fabrication over the holidays. Hoping to drop the engine off at PCW for building soon.
  15. There are some indications of chatter on the mating surface of the 72 tooth gear. Makes me feel a bit more reassured that the starter clutch is the issue. Turns out the spare I had has the same chattering marks. So I'll be ordering new parts. Thank you for all of the help. FWIW the bolts the spare starter clutch are torqued super tight which also means mine were way too loose.
  16. So about a little over a month ago I went to start up the 89 and got the box of marbles sound while cranking it over. She fired up and at idle had a small crunch or two as well. Killed it and figured the starter clutch may be bad. The bike has pretty low miles Upon inspection it looks nice. No chipping or unusual wear. It possibly looks like a new replacement part. I've attached some pictures. Maybe some of you experts might have a better idea. Out of the 3 bolts one was loose enough I probably could've unscrewed it with a small screwdriver, another was a little tight but not much (Maybe 25 in/lb), the last i couldnt undo with a ratchet while holding the oily flywheel in my hand but loosened easily with a quick pop from my cordless impact driver. All 3 volts had remnants of thread sealant and two were peened (staked) although not effectively. Would the 2 bolts being somewhat loose cause a bad grind? Or do I possibly have worse issues. The springs, cups, and rollers are perfect looking. No scratching/scuffing/indentations. Video of sound: I think I made a video I'll have to dig up. Thank you.
  17. The 89 Venture was my first big touring bike and I was having troubles getting it onto the center stand. I expressed this to a fellow co-worker and rider and he explained what to do and then threw in the "no-balls" comment that even his 75 year old mother could do it. So after a 14 hour night shift I get home and it's still dark and the family is asleep so I pull the venture out and proceed to do my best 75 year old woman's attempt of putting the bike on the centerstand. After about 10 failed attempts I'm halfway to a heart attack and sweating. I throw everything into it like a wet noodle and drop the bike onto my truck. The whole while my buddy's words resonating in my head. Feeling totally immasculated I decide I'm too tired to deal with it and go inside for a power nap. A few hours later after the wife has gotten up to get the kids off to school I'm awoken to my wife informing me someone tried to steal my bike and messed up my truck. I'm so tired I'm damn near hallucination. In a sleep deprived stuper I walk outside to see the mess this criminal made. Then it all rushes back to me. I explain the whole story in a mumbled blur to my wife. She laughs and sends me back to bed. Took a few days for the ridicule to end. Bike and truck has minor scratching. The scarring to my psyche took awhile to go away.
  18. I just did a set about 2 months ago and Partzilla had good prices. Definitely check the diaphragms/coasting enricheners first and see if they actually need replacing. If they are good then you can save quite a bit.
  19. Yeah I have an idea how that can be. Sold off all my bikes and track bikes a few years ago to tackle medical bills and was bikeless for a couple years. If you need any help with the bike I've got a bunch of random spares. Some RSV parts horded for different projects etc.
  20. Welcome. Hopefully it's the same RSV that's been taunting me on Craigslist. My wife will thank you. Great bikes super reliable. Not much experience with the 2nd gens myself but definitely check for rust in the tank if it's been sitting for awhile. Smell for fuel at idle possibly indicating a stuck float. Any hesitation on acceleration could be caused by gumming up and is relatively easy to clean the carbs. Any big issues with idle creeping and having issues controlling idle and choke could show some signs of diaphragms/coasting enricheners leaking/bad and would be worth some negotiating points as rubber parts can be a little pricey. Good luck with the purchase.
  21. Hello all. Just wanted to start a thread to track the build process of my 1983 Venture Royale. The goal: Daily driver ridability/reliability. Discreet. Not necessary hide the additions but make them disappear to the casual onlooker since I will be riding to work and parking on public streets in not so nice parts of town. Retain shaft drive. Hoping to be around 200hp at ~8psi. I picked the bike up locally back in July. Previous owner disassembled it to remove the carbs to have them rebuilt. Shad them rebuilt then lost interest so it was basically a rolling frame and motor. So far I've been amassing parts. Focusing on the turbo stuff first then chassis improvements. Parts list so far: Holley 390 double pumper. Modifying it for blow through duty. Pretty robust and proven on many cars. Got it for a steal. Garrett GTX2860R turbo. 2001 RSV 1300 motor. Like the idea of the taller gears and it was free. Vmax heads/cams. I've got a few spares around including a vmax parts bike. Dyna 3000 ignition. Might go with something different but I've got a vmax unit ready if need be. Still need to order all the plumbing and intercooler. Hoping to start fabricating the manifold over Christmas break. Pictures to follow.
