robbitybob Posted August 24, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 24, 2008 When I was taking my fuel tank off to replace my ignition switch I think I broke the outlet off of my fuel petcock valve. I had loosened and pulled the clamp back on the fuel line but then the line didn’t want to come off. I tugged and tugged and twisted and tugged some more until POP off it came. That’s the good news. The bad news is - stuck in the end of the hose was the brass connector. Since I am a relative yamaha newby I am supposing that I pulled the connector sleeve right out of the petcock. It probably isn’t supposed to do this - am I right? Is it broken? I just ordered a replacement petcock but I can cancel it if somebody will tell me that this is the way the Yamaha petcock disconnects from the fuel line! pa_don Posted August 24, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 24, 2008 Bob, The fuel lines have a tendency to "stick" to the brass fitting. I have had mine pull out. You should be able to remove the line from the fitting with a little effort. I had to "pry" mine off with a small screwdriver until it was "loose". The brass fitting will just push back in to the fitting and be re-seated. I had that happen when I had to change the rubber gaskets due to leaking. I had not leakes or problem with the fittings after I reseated it. pa_don
robbitybob Posted August 24, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted August 24, 2008 Thanks pa don. I really didn't want to have to put in a new petcock! Did you put any loctite or something on your's or did it just friction fit back in?
Freebird Posted August 24, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 24, 2008 Yep...what he said. I pulled mine out several years ago. I just put it back in, tapped it lightly with a rubber mallet and it has never come out or leaked. I didn't use any locktite on it.
pegscraper Posted August 24, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2008 Some loctite will help ensure it doesn't come off again.
Billet Posted August 24, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 24, 2008 Same here. Put a little aluminum plug in the end and "gently" tapped it back in to seat it. Has been fine since. Didn't use any sealer or sitckem.
Maritimer Posted August 25, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2008 Mine did the same while doing winter maintenance on the bike. I used a small wooden mallet to set it back in. I was a bit nervous at the start of biking season but all is well and no gas leak. Cheers
robbitybob Posted August 25, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted August 25, 2008 It is apparent that this is a somewhat common problem. I have canceled my parts order & I will reseat the sleeve. Thanks again for all of your help.
