New owner of a classic 93 Venture Royale 1300. At low idle and clutch not engaged, I'm hearing a knocking from left side of bike, pull in clutch and noise goes away. (over 93K miles)

Should I be worried?

Just to clear things up for you. First Gen is '83 -'93, second gen is '99 - '13, third gen is what we hope is coming soon. I am moving this thread to the First Gen section for you.

It is hard to guess from the description of a sound.

If the knocking is coming from the left side while running, the only thing I can think of off hand in that area is the stator. It has been known for someone to replace a stator and not put Loctite on the screws and have the stator come loose. It can then rattle around a bit. But I do not see how the clutch could have an effect on that.

Does this knocking happen in neutral, but goes away when you pull in the clutch?

Does this knock happen in gear with the clutch pulled?

How about while idling along in 1st gear?

What is the clutch not supposed to make this sound while in neutral?

I pull my leaver and the sound goes away, but most of the time I have heard what I would guess would be the throw out bearing humming, and sometimes a tap. So I might learn something else once again, but there was that one day I thought it was coming from the waterpump come to find out my alluminum was tapping....

Mine is an 89 and I noticed some clutch knock at idle/neutral, it is on the right side though but that guttural tap can carry. I had a few moments of panic as it really sounded like a rod bearing starting to get sloppy.

When I put some pressure on the clutch lever it went away. I stopped being concerned, it works great and no slippage, it gets this bike to triple digit speeds pretty quickly without any hint of problems. I just took a trip over 4 states, no issues, no worries. I dont even notice it anymore.

Not a one, but MT is always one of my favorite states to end up in for no reason at all. I was in states beginning with S, W, C and N :happy65:

Hey Mike,

Welcome to the Forum! The noise that you are hearing is most likely the bearing that supports the clutch basket. That bearing gets a bit "loose" at your mileage point, and the basket flops around a bit in the Clutch housing. I personally have replaced that bearing in my 87'VR and after about 20K, the noise came back again. It is my opinion that this is one of those noises that you have with this particular motorcycle, and is of very little concern. My bike sees red line regularly, and has never given me a bit of trouble in the engine department. I run the 20W-50 Castrol dino oil, and this seemed to help with the noise somewhat, but being as OCD as I am, it was still there to some degree.
