CaseyJ955 Posted March 27, 2017 #1 Posted March 27, 2017 I see a lot of info on 2nd gen oil filters but not 1st gen. I looked in a couple catalogs and found spin-on style filters but what I have is a cartridge style filter and I'm cool with staying with that for this round. I slid a Fram out of there and there today and theres no way I would knowingly use a Fram filter. I read that Supertech (Walmart) has a good quality filter but could not give me a number. I'm hoping one of you good folks knows the part number for a 1st gen cartridge oil filter for Supertech so I can go up and grab a few of them? Also when I drained the oil it was nice and clean but when I slid the cartridge out there were a some super fine brass sparklies in the oil trapped there, need I be concerned? This bike is so insanely smooth and quiet since I added the cops and ignitek so there are no major problems detectable but I fret some anytime I see the oil sparklies. Thanks all!
snyper316 Posted March 27, 2017 #2 Posted March 27, 2017 You sure your Wal-mart Has Any filters for bikes, The walmart here told me they no longer carry motorcycle stuff.... That is why they only stock the one brand of motorcycle oil. Just FYI... Unless there is an ATV out there that takes the same cartridge. I got my filter from Oreily.
Flyinfool Posted March 27, 2017 #3 Posted March 27, 2017 I use either NAPA or O'Rileys. Just walk in and ask for an oil filter for your bike, the puter knows the P/N. It is not a Fram. The individual stores do not have it in stock but it is always there tomorrow. I would imagine you could call and have it there tomorrow also.
BlueSky Posted March 27, 2017 #4 Posted March 27, 2017 I bought one for my 89 Venture from NAPA. The number is NAPA PS4933. It's made by WIX.
CaseyJ955 Posted March 27, 2017 Author #5 Posted March 27, 2017 (edited) I'll head to NAPA and grab one of those in the morning, there is a NAPA that I can get to w/o going through the city! I tend to like WIX filters so a couple of those should do it. Thanks! Called NAPA, thats still the current part number too. Didnt have any in stock but he will have a couple of them on the counter for me in the morning. Luckily there are a few in Billings. At $9 ea they arent cheap but it's all good if it protects my baby for a few thousand miles. Edited March 27, 2017 by CaseyJ955
Patmac6075 Posted March 27, 2017 #6 Posted March 27, 2017 Wix is the "go-to" filter for most professionals. And I too would never use a fram automotive filter, but their cartridge style filter for our bikes is as good as anything out there. I, personally wouldn't hesitate to use one.
Yammer Dan Posted March 27, 2017 #7 Posted March 27, 2017 If you have a 1st Gen with a spin-on the adapter has been added. ST 3950 fits the adapter. You know I've heard all the scare stories about the Fram but have used them for years and watched closely. NO PROBLEMS!!! But The Super Tech 3950 will fit that adapter.
Yammer Dan Posted March 28, 2017 #8 Posted March 28, 2017 Maybe I should read a little slower!!:bang head:
BlueSky Posted March 28, 2017 #9 Posted March 28, 2017 A couple of days ago, I bought a WIX oil filter for my 85 Kawasaki from O'Reillys Auto Parts. I didn't ask but I suspect they could supply the Venture filter also. I looked in Walmart first and they did have 3 different Fram motorcycle oil filters on the shelf but nothing that would fit my bikes.
Karaboo Posted March 28, 2017 #10 Posted March 28, 2017 I think the Fram cartridge style for the 1st gen is waaay better than their typical spin-on. I have been using them since I got my bike because they are right next to the gallons of diesel oil in Fleet Farm. They also come with both of the o-rings to do the job.

I have been using them since I got my bike because they are right next to the gallons of diesel oil in Fleet Farm. They also come with both of the o-rings to do the job. I had the Fram and Napa/WIX next to each other and they didnt look much different. I have no doubt that there is a difference in the quality of the media. The Napa is a little heavier and more robust feeling/looking. All the Orings were present and now I have one on the shelf for next time. Damn guys, this thing is running so nice I cant wait to get her out on the road. It's stone cold and rainy today, when I started it to let the oil circulate before final top off it fired up, I barely heard the starter touch the engine before it struck a sweet smooth idle. Just had to throw in some bragging, the COPs and Ignitek are the SHIZZZNIT! It's a whole different bike than when I brought her home. Not only do I love this bike but I love this forum.
Yammer Dan Posted March 29, 2017 #12 Posted March 29, 2017 Make sure ya didn't overfill. It will make a mess if overfull it will blow it out. When on Centerstand it should be almost 1/2 way up the sight glass. Just a shade short. How much of a shade??? Time will tell. If the Air Box gets oil in it ya got too much.
