mmaleney Posted March 31, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2012 I was geting ready to swap out the final drive on my 88 with a drive from a 2nd gen when I noticed that I could move the pinion from side to side with just my hand. Is there a way to take up the slop in the pinion or will the unit have to be taken apart and reshimed. Sure dont want to do all that work still have the noise still. Thanks. Marcarl Posted March 31, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 31, 2012 Might be handie to know what you exactly mean by 'pinion'. Pictures are always good.
Venturous Randy Posted April 1, 2012 Share #3 Posted April 1, 2012 I can not imagine you being able to move the pinion from side to side. If you can do this, this may be why you have a final drive whine. RandyA
saddlebum Posted April 1, 2012 Share #4 Posted April 1, 2012 ! suggest taking the final drive apart and visually inspecting all the parts. My 89 did that and I found it was because the threaded end snapped off of the pinion shaft, Althought I find it hard to imagine a second gen snapping a pinion shaft. It probably wont hurt to check the bearings and replace the seals before you install it anyway.
MiCarl Posted April 1, 2012 Share #5 Posted April 1, 2012 I assume you're talking about the pinion on the 2nd gen final? You shouldn't be able to do that. What is its history? Has the pinion nut been off? If the nut isn't torqued down it'll have slop in it. The nut is staked on so it needs to be replaced if it's been removed.
