Kind of down in the dumps.....

It hasn't been a good week around here.....Tues morning a 7 yr old girl was getting on the school bus and a pick up killed her.

Hit and run. It happened right down our road. The hubby was hauling gravel for the county and was the first one that came upon the accident. 18 kids on the bus watched it happen. She laid 3 bus lengths down the road. She was DOA. Thank God they found the driver of the pick up because every one of those kids could describe the truck. We live in a rural area where everyone knows everyone and it's really hit hard. I feel so bad for Gary as he's having flashbacks. He's a volunteer fireman/emt, but you never get over the sight of a little girl laying there lifeless.

Anyway, was going to ask for your prayers for not only the little girl's family, but also the hubby.....

but I'm afraid to even ask after I keep reading the the thread about people not thinking this is the right place.....so I guess I'll just ask for you to keep him in your thoughts.

Thanks

Deb

NORTHWOOD — A 7-year-old Worth County girl was killed Tuesday morning by an alleged hit-and-run driver as she prepared to get on her school bus.

The Iowa State Patrol identified the girl as Kadyn Halvorson of rural Kensett.

The driver, identified as Aaron Dwayne Gunderson, 31, of Northwood, allegedly fled the scene but was later apprehended. Gunderson was ticketed for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Mindy Griffin said the Northwood-Kensett school bus was stopped to pick up the child when a 2002 Chevrolet pick-up traveling southbound on Raven Avenue failed to stop for the bus and struck the girl.

The accident happened at 7:49 a.m. at 4336 Raven Ave., near the home of the child’s babysitter. It’s about 2.3 miles north of 410th Street/County Road A38 between Northwood and Kensett.

The child was crossing Raven Avenue to get on the northbound bus when she was hit. Griffin said the bus had its red lights activated and the stop arm was deployed from the side of the bus as required by law.

The children on the school bus witnessed the accident, as did the babysitter, Griffin said.

The vehicle and Gunderson were taken into custody by the Worth County deputies about two miles from the accident scene.

The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Northwood-Kensett Superintendent Tom Nugent said Tuesday was a sad day for everyone in the school district.

“We were notified of the tragic accident and we are now providing crisis assistance for our kids and we are working in collaboration with law enforcement,” Nugent said.

As a Chief of a volunteer fire department I understand exactly what he is going through. He needs to utilize the resources within the department immediately for traumatic events. This will not leave on its own. He would be anything BUT human if it did.

CISM (Critical incident stress management) is there for a reason. Please have him use them resources.

My heart goes out to the family for sure. What a horrific thing to have to face. These situations affect everyone involved.

Don't let that other thread convince you not to ask for thoughts and prayers. If someone chooses not to pray, that's their choice, but that doesn't mean that others of us shouldn't. I only post about prayer requests if I actually have met the person making such request, and I have met only a few people on this board, so it seldom happens. At this time, however, I felt the need to say that the requests should not stop coming because some people choose not to believe or participate.

Here's praying that somehow all involved will find the comfort and support to get them through this. Understanding of WHY this should happen will probably never come, but to be at peace with it some day in the future probably can.

Deb,

Don't let the opinion of one individual keep you from doing that you feel is right in your heart.

Go ahead and ask for prayers for the little girl, her family, Gary, and even for the driver that struck and killed her if you've a mind too.

One person does not a consensus make.

Deb,

You and Gary are in our thought and our prayers. Also that poor little girls family and all those kids on the bus. It is a horrible thing to see at any age but as a child it seems to always be in the back of your mind. I know it always has been for me.

If you or Gary need to talk or vent you got my cell # and are welcome to call me ANY time.

Take care of your self and give Gary a bigger, longer hug than normal, I'm sure he could use it.

Well, it happened AGAIN yesterday morning. No one got hurt, but the semi had to pass the bus on the shoulder of the road because he couldn't stop in time. What is it going to take to make people slow down.

NORTHWOOD, IA - A semi-truck driver is ticketed for passing a school bus while it had its stop-arm out Thursday morning.

The driver is identified as Thomas Burkhart of Kentucky.

He drives for Swinford Trucking Company of Illinois.

Worth County authorities say the bus driver reported the semi at around 8:00am.

A police officer stopped Burkhart in Northwood.

He's cited with unlawful passing.

This comes just two days after Aaron Gunderson was taken into custody in the hit and run death of Kadyn Halverson of Kensett, as she tried to board her school bus.

Gunderson was ticketed for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right away.

Charges against Gunderson are pending an investigation into the crash.

That is so sad, there are no words to express how that makes me feel.

It brings back memories of my childhood, when I witnessed a five year old friend of mine hit by a Jeep going 100 mph as we were getting off our school bus to go home. In those days, we had to cross the street.

It has haunted me my whole life, because I can still see it. It is something you never get over, and especially when I was only 7 years old myself. He never had chance. Ironically, several years later the driver of the Jeep ran into a bridge and was killed instantly. He was speeding.

I will certainly pray for this family.

Prayers sent for you and Gary, and the girls family, Deb.

Karen was on the local EMS for 18 years, and still on the FLFD. We'll probably run into a few members this evening that had to take care of a motorcycle accident (no not an accident, a killing) yesterday afternoon about a half a mile out of our little town. 18 year old kid in a minivan crossed centerline and killed a biker from 5 miles west of here.

I don't know what it will take for folks to pay attention when driving.:confused24:

Later, Scooter Bob and Karen
