Well folks, I really liked the Equus gauges when I bought and installed them but wanted to report back that I just can't recommend them to you. They have been installed for a little over a year. The thing that I liked about them was the color of the dials. They are sort of an antique white that come very close to matching the background color of the RSV instrument panel. For some reason though, the center gauge on mine has turned snow white. The outer two are still the beige color but the center is white now. I don't know why. It seems that if it was the UV from the sun that they would have all faded. That is just one problem though. I got in one last ride last Sunday before having my surgery this week. All the gauges were working fine when we left but just before getting home, I noticed that the temp gauge was sitting on zero so apparently is has bit the dust.

 

So, I will be replacing my gauges when I get healed up and feel like doing it but just wanted to issue a warning that the Equus gauges are not the way to go. Sure wish I could find another brand with the antique white/beige dials but the Sunpro may be the only other ones available in this size.

SunPro & Harbor Freight is I have found besides the Equus.

 

But, the Smith's dual gauge in 52mm (2 1/16") in the Magnolia finish plus one other matching gauge would fit in a 2 gauge plate. I haven't found a tach in that color/size.

you have room to go to a two gauge plate height wise..and width wise....your half circle cuts would be bigger in diameter.....the only question is the white "box" that the cassette player is mounted in...and the height of that box opening....but i believe that could be worked to accomodate bigger gauges than the 1 1/2 inch gauges i started with...how much bigger you could go i couldn't answer......also, you might have to machine a little of the top part of the opening....

I am thinking about going with a set of sunpro.

Question I have is ho hard is it too hook up the mechanical connectoins.

The writeup says need connection for voltmeter, how hard is the connection to find?

I hooked mine to the hot side of the powerport, not as accurate as coming off the battery with a relay but it was close and no wire to run, my volt metter runs ab 13 volts unless I just started it then shows 14 and drop shortly afterwards

the mechanical connections are easy......the posts on this installaton are in the 2nd gen tech library.......plus, ponch sells entire kits.........but a voltmeter connection is easy.....one wire,normally red, is the positive wire and is connected to a "hot" source....for the most accurate reading some run a wire directly from the battery....another wire is used as a ground...and a third wire is for backlighting......any gauge kit will have the instructions..

water temp gauge is connected to the left rear cyl using the temp probe with the gauge, and an adapter

oil pressure gauge is connected by removing a plug from the lower right side of the bike by your foot....replacing that plug with an adapter...and running the small diameter line up the neck , to the fairing and then to the gauge.....

So how hard is it to convert from the 3 gauge plate to the 2? Just more trimming?

 

No prob, Don. I just have to make another plate. It has to be 2 1/4" tall. Bubber has a 2 hole plate w/ 2 1/16" gauges.

There's room. I can even put a tach under 2 - 1 1/2" gauges w/o a problem with the "box". I never have to alter the top of the opening.

Monty uses a relay and power straight from the battery for volts. It works really well and gets about as accurate voltage as you can get without installing the volt meter at the battery.

Nope, three won't fit. I can get 2 - 1 1/2" gauges on top & 1 -1 7/8" tach on the bottom. Height is the issue. If I were going with a 2 gauge plate, I would use the Smith's dual meter & the Autometer tach and a digital voltmeter else where. :missingtooth:

BTW, 7k on the tach won't be enough rpm's for you, Dyno Don!

Ponch or anyone, have you looked at the Dakota Digital gauges? Yes I know they are spendy.

 

They are available in blue and red digits. Red would look nice on my bike.

when i searched last year for gauges....1 1/2 gauges were the smallest around..and not a big selection.......except! for mini gauges in a rectangle pod made in the 70's.........which i scored on ebay, and now have no use for..........

At least to my recent conversation w/ Autometer, their non-cycle tachs won't work on our scoot. Now I am electronically & mechanically challenged but I gotta believe there is a way to make it work.

Not sure why they make some tach 2/16" in some series and not others. If you make one the rest of it should just be a matter of a different face plate.

 

If anyone can chime in that is currently using an Autometer tach on their scoots and can tell me it works, then I will probably buy it on next payday. Then I can also reply back to the Autometer guy telling him it does work and here is how it was done.

In order for the UV to fade the gauges it has to be in the sun and do not believe your garage has Skylights ? :rotf::stirthepot:
