Hinge Insert Options?

Saturday we removed the tank badge from Roxie, my '06 RTSD. I like how sleek it made her look. Someone said she looks like a panther. Mysterious, menacing, and sexy, that's her.

The most glaring thing to change now is the hinges. I know I can buy OEM chrome inserts, but I have restrained myself from adding flashy stuff. She is a midnight bike, and IMO is meant to be dark and threatening. Chrome there would be out of character.

What are some options for replacing the hinge inserts with gloss black. Or better, like the original but saying Roxie instead of Tour Deluxe?

Ideas?

I saw that, but it was laser etched chrome/shinystuff.

Cut yourself a piece of thin black Plexiglas and put it in there.

Is this something can be done with hand tools? Maybe I should be on the lookout for a fabricator.

I'll see if I can make something up. You would have to silcone it in probably. Be about 20 bucks if your interested.

I am tentatively interested. Do you think I could etch some words into it?

there are several things that you can do with the center of the hinges..

32 led lights inside each hinge, make for good brake and running lamps on my homemade trailer

That's a cool trailer!

and of course the ever reliable Duck (sic) Tape....

:15_8_211[1]:

Why didn't I think of that?!

dave 77459 did you heat the emblems to remove them - what was your process? i like the looks of it w/o the emblems. i've got an '07 midnight - could be my next project---hmmmmm!

OWEN started with his fingernails...

That was working, but slowly. So we used corded 50# fishing line. I wore gloves and sawed at the glue while OWEN pulled it away. That left the glue....

Then we used toxins, a plastic scraper, and shop towels to remove the glue. OWEN and Gunboat worked with me for a long time. Goo Gone Extreme seemed to work. But then Gunboat uncovered a can of... lacquer thinner, I think. (That's what the can says when you blow up the photo, and what I remember.) It worked much much faster!

The result was a nice, black, shiny blank canvas to enjoy.

If you really did you Lacquer thinner on it, make sure you keep that puppy waxed...

A little dab here and there, wiped off almost immediately is not enough to do any major damage right away but if it was being rubbed in to get the glue off there is a good chance that some damage to the clear coat occurred. A healthy coat of wax once every couple of months ought to take care of it though, no big deal.

Looks great!! :thumbsup2:

We were trying to be careful to rub it on the glue. Here's hoping! But thanks for the reminder. I put a coat of wax on it when I got home. I ought to put another coat on it tomorrow too.

I bet that LED install on the hinges would be popular if you wanted to make them for sale.

I like the look, nice and clean.

If it were mine I'd look for some place that does chrome and see if they can black chrome the hinges. Won't be as dark, but would look nice and custom.

Thanks Dave

You're right they may not look right on an early 2nd gen. I was thinking more of using them as a guide to getting some made here in the UK, although to be honest they have got to look better than the hole thats there at the moment. I just thought they were a transfer, but by the look of your excellent photos they seem to be a plastic insert. Did you have a price in mind?

Cheers Alasdair

I haven't taken mine off yet, since I didn't have a replacement in hand. And now, Roxie is in the shop for perhaps 8 weeks. I don't know that you will want to wait, but if so, I'd send them in exchange for a postcard. If you are only using the shape as a template, I could also trace them once off and send you that.
