Mobil 1 oil change time?

OK, 3000 miles ago I switch to the Mobil 1 full synthetic motor oil. With that said: do i just change the filter and go another 3k or change out the oil and the filter?

 

any takers?

Well, I certainly hope you changed out the oil filter during your change over to the Mobile fully synthetic 3000 miles ago.....

I would (and always do) change both...oil & filter......every time.

I also change mine every 3000 miles....some say this is unnessessary and a waste of money, but I have done this all my life.. Why change now.

Yes, i agree. I have always, replaced both at the oil and the filter every 3000 miles with normal, petroleum based oils (yamalube/honda line etc.).

 

I guess i was just looking for a more definitive answer regarding the need to change synthetic oils and oil filter every 3000 miles too or can one simply replace the oil filter at the 3000 mile mark and let the oil go another 2-3000 miles.

I would have to say "YES" you could.. to answer your question.

 

But....well lets just say I would not do that.

 

I change both at same time..always..

 

To do what your asking, is a way to get more miles (or use) out of the synthetic oil.

 

By changing only the filter ever 3,000 miles, you basically extend the USE of the oil....however you are not extending the LIFE of the oil..

You are useing the oil for its "proclaimed life" or advertised life of say 7,000 miles between oil changes..which you could do.

If I were going to go the 7K miles between oil changes I would change the filter at 3500 miles. The oil is designed to run without breaking down for that many miles, but it will be good to put a new filter on to assure that you keep it clean.

 

I know several people that do thier synthetic oil this way and have had very good sucess with it

I would be more concerned about the air filter vs. the oil filter. The first line of defense is your air filter, it is what keeps dirt from entering your engine. If you are riding in a very dusty area then you may have to change your oil and filters more often. Oil keeps the dirt in suspension and of course the oil filter removes dirt particles. I dont think that your oil filter is plugged with dirt or even close to it, provided you ride on blacktop and not gravel roads. As i see it the whole point of using syn is for the extended drain intervals. 3k is early in my opinion where as say 5 or 6k might be more realistic. You will only know with a UOA which is available from many labs in the USA. If you are sure that 3k is your comfort zone then go with Rotella, Dello or any diesel 15/40 oil. For 10 dollars or less you have a gallon of oil that is better than dealer spec oil and less expensive. A good source of info is www.bobistheoilguy.com for any questions you have about oil. I believe both of these answers are pretty much on the money. But I would still change the filter at 3500 miles.
