Need help with rear seat bolts

Recommended Posts

I am having a problem with my rear seat. I have a drivers backrest and needed longer bolts to install that with the rear seat. I thought I got the right size bolts, but they are obviously slightly different because I cannot get them to tighten up anymore.

I have had the backrest on for about a year now and have only recently started having this problem. I tried taking the backrest off and using the stock bolts, but they won't tighten down now either.

Any suggestions besides get a new mounting bracket for the rear seat?

It appears the welded nuts have loosened up. There are a couple of solutions.

1) Drill and tap it to a little larger size.

2) Try some blue locktite and see if that will hold.

3) Thread a longer bolt backward thru the nut and them put another nut on the outside (with blue locktite)

4) Hack off the welded nuts and use one of the threaded clips used on cars.

5) Wrap the current bolts with teflon tape.

Don't know if any of these will work, but ....

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

Is it a Diamond-R or a Utopia? (this information will get you better help).

Sounds like a DiamondR. The Utopia doesn't use the passenger seat bolts.

If the original bolts don't fit anymore, clearly the blind nuts are no longer doing the job. The part appears to be about $17. Personally, I'd go for it.

Don't know why I didn't think about thread tape, but will definatley give this a try

Actually, it is neither. I got this backrest from Squidley, it is one from a Harley that he altered to fit the RSV. If the part is that cheap, I may just go ahead and order a new one.
