Clicking from rear

Just bought an '88 Venture last night. The owner said it was making a clicking sound from the rear. From what I've read it sounds like the axle may need to be aligned?

 

Is it safe to ride it like this? I really would like to take it for a spin.

If you look in the title bar area you'll see a "Search" function. Click on it and you'll get a pop up window. At the bottom is a Google search field. Type in something like "rear clicking" and then choose the radio button for www.venturerider.org (limits search to this site). Click on the "Google search" button... and you'll find every entry for clicking rear ends.

A common problem with these bikes, the fix is to remove the rear wheel, clean everything, and GREESE everything.

Also a good idea to remove the drive unit, change the SAE-90 oil, and also, pull out the drive shaft, and hand greese the splines on both ends of the drive shaft.

( the service manuel does not call out this proceedure, !! ) But, most likley you will find the splines are completly dry !!

Remove the large Circlip, and pull out the item with the Large Pins from the wheel after you remove it, Clean everything, and Greese Everything,

 

After you re-assemble the shaft, drive unit, and re-install the wheel, Re-Torque all the nuts and bolts, then, Loossen them again, then Tap Tap Tap on everything to " Relieve Stress " !! Then Re-Torque all the Nuts, in Steps, and keep tapping on everything, add torque etc, etc, until you get to the proper torque settings.

 

BE sure to RE - Install the Thick Washer, on the right side of Axel in the correct Position !!!!!!!!!!!! This is a common mistake, and if you get it wrong, the rear brake will be running at an " Angle " !!!

 

As long as you have it appart, Check the INNER REar Brake pad !! Most likley it will be worn At an ANGLE, If rear pads are worn about 1/2 thickness, REPLACE Them as long as you have it pulled Apart.

 

As long as you have the wheel Out, It is highly reccomended that you dissassemble and Hand Greese, the Suspension Linkage Under the Rear Shock, ( see the above Link !!! ) ( most likley its never been done !! again, not in the service proceedure's in the manuel )

 

If your rear tire is more then half worn out, good idea to install a new Dunlop E-3 Tire. :whistling:

 

I would also consider Replaceing ALL the Brake fluid in the Rear system !! Use

Synthectic Brake fluid, ( be sure to leave 1/2 inch of expansion space in the rear brake resovoiur, for heat expansion of the fluid )
