  1. Rise Mary and I are home safe and dry. Stayed overnight at the farm in Indiana, PA. Mostly dry both days.

    It was great seeing old friends and making new ones. Thanks Eileen and Don. Hope we can do it again next year.

  3. Here are the instructions I use:

    To remove the rear shock on the RSV:

    1. Remove the Passenger Floorboards

    2. Remove the Side Covers

    3. Remove the Plastic Covers

    a. Just to the rear of the Side Cover

    b. The Passenger Floorboards bolt through these covers.

    4. Remove the Rubber Ring from the Shock Air Adjustment Valve

    5. Remove the nut from the Shock Air Adjustment Valve

    a. Push Shock Air Adjustment Valve out of position.

    6. Loosen the nuts on the Shock Mounting Bolts

    a. You will need a socket extension and swivel to do this step.

    7. Lift the bike with a motorcycle jack and a lift bracket like the one sold by Carbon One.

    a. Be sure to strap the motorcycle to the jack.

    b. Rear wheel should just be off the ground about ¼”

    8. If your RSV has a vent hose, coming off of the rubber flex, boot un-clip it from the frame.

    a. This hose will come off of the back of the shock and will be clipped to the rear and above the shock with a plastic clip.

    b. Note where it is attached to the frame.

    9. Remove the nuts from the Shock Mounting Bolts.

    10. Remove the Top Shock Mounting Bolt.

    a. You may have to “bounce” the rear tire to relieve pressure on the bolt.

    11. Remove the Bottom Shock Mounting Bolt.

    a. At this point the shock will be detached from the bike and can be removed.

    To re-install follow the instructions in reverse keeping in mind the following:

    1. Inspect the new shock to ensure that the top and bottom mounting holes are parallel.

    a. If not, you will have problems lining up the top holes.

    2. The Air Adjustment Hose and Flex Boot Vent Hose are installed toward the rear of the motorcycle.

    a. Thread them towards where they belong after installing the Bottom Shock Mounting Bolt.

    3. After installing the Bottom Mounting Bolt use a line-up punch to line up the top bolt hole.

    a. I found this is easiest to do from the left side.

    b. “Bounce” the rear tire or use the jack to assist in lining up the top bolt hole.

    4. Install the top bolt from the right side using a socket, swivel and extension.

    a. This may require some patience, if the line-up punch is effective this job will be easier.

    I provide this service to all paid members on the Venturerider's site. The repair I make is to replace the leaking O ring above the bottom clevis, no other issues are addressed. I can usually repair a shock and get it back in the mail in a couple of days. The cost is a donation of $50. This covers the O ring, suspension fluid and return freight to you (via USPS Priority Mail, about $15). I don't do this for profit and any left over funds are donated to the forum or one of the rallies I attend.

     

    I have a couple of shocks in a repair and exchange pool that I can send to you prior to removing your failed shock. You can remove the old shock and replace it with the exchange unit at the same time then return the failed shock to me.

  5. Dfitzbiz, how has the longevity been with your rebuilt shocks? You have given a few updates, I was just wondering how these have held up? My shock bottom is oily and dirty, so I am on a ticking clock. Thanks for all your help.

     

    Thanks for asking Bobcat. I’ve repaired about 20 over the past 3 years. I had one fail in shipment. It was stuck in an FPO in Hawaii for about a month. And I had one fail prior to installation due to a pinched O ring. I corrected each failure at no charge. I haven’t had any fail in operation that I can recall. Maybe some of my customers can give us a review. If you need a repair please PM me.

  6. I know we have some here who also belong to another Venture related group but may not check in there very often. For those folks just a note that there will be a gathering near Dalton, GA for some mountain riding. Arriving Wednesday June 19th and departing Sunday June 23rd.

  7. Actually I should thank you. I have noticed that where the oil landed on my Tony Lama boots...there is no rust.:rotf::rotfl::rotf::rotfl::rotf::rotfl:

    I have a couple gallons of the stuff sitting around, we could coat the entire pair of boots. BOOT RUST ISSUE SOLVED!! This site has all kind of good info.

    And a good pair of coveralls also!! Now is the time to get those leaking shocks to me. When riding weather gets here I may be a bit busy. There are never enough hours in a day now that I'm semi-retired.

  9. I had actually considered NY rally but after seeing how stupid some politicians are in that state, I’m pretty sure I’ll be at Vogel again. Unless my mayors position gets me buried under

     

    Hey Skid, you hit the nail on the head about the whack-a-doodle politicians in NY. The WNY rally is in WESTERN New York, I'm not sure that the two New York's are even connected. The WNY crew is made up of really great and fun people. If you decide to go to WNY let me know, we have a group from PA that meets up and travels together. The nearest riders to you is near Pittsburgh, they would enjoy some company for the beginning of the trip. We usually meet them in DuBois and ride to Chaffee together. Congratulations and Good Luck with the mayors position, I hope the great pay makes it worth the headaches.

  10. The 2017 Vogel started on August 16th and went thru the 3rd weekend. I ride down on the 14th that year. I’ve never missed a Vogel ever.

  11. Vogel & Ashville Rallies has always started on Wednesday and ended on the third Sunday of the month for the last 15 - 20 years

     

    Thanks Skid, that's some great history. I see that Vogel 2017 was held on the 4th weekend of August. Looking at he past history of sign ups for this event appear to be pretty light. Of course not everyone signs up on the calendar. If the date didn't conflict with the WNY Rally you would probably get some of us Yankees and Canuckians to attend (we promise to go back north after the event). Earlier in the month would be better for me. Maybe some other attendees of the WNY Rally will chime in here. I hope to see you in August.
