I am trying to install new Pilot Screw Sets in all 4 Carburetors on my '87, I destroyed my original Carbs trying to get them out, but I got a new to me Carb set off a '86 and the screws came out nice and smooth. The rubber O Ring's naturally stayed put way down where I see no easy way to get to them I, of course will shoot all kinds of compressed air in there that will probably dislodge it and send it to god knows where without me seeing a thing so I'm worried that I won't know if an O-Ring is in there or not. So is there any way to verify they're actually out of there and not clinging on for dear life in there so I don't end up having a new O-Ring sitting on top of an old O-Ring?

Did I do the right thing?
Vonwolf replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The 4 brush starter will spin your motor fast and for a long time even if your battery is just OK after years of fighting this I was amazed. I just bought the upgraded Battery cables from Dingy last month he might still have some they were well made and soft bendable cable so they were easy to install -
I got a Great deal on a set of '86 Carbs that turned out to be in really good shape. The most important thing is all the Pilot Screws work fine I was able to screw them all the way tight and remove them completely, had I enough brains to do that when I first bought the bike I would have saved me a lot of screwing around with this backfire BS. I am now in the process of disassembling the Carbs exchanging the new pieces from the older Carb, once I get everything cleaned and adjusted I feel the backfire issue will be a thing of the past. I have to thank Dave for his offering the '86 Carb's available and at a great price, he has saved my bike. I can't wait to get them back on the old Girl and see how she runs, but My Mom is hitting a rough patch in her health and she takes up a large chunk of my time, she's a great lady and deserves every second of my time

I just received the carburetors today and I could not be happier, they're in great shape they look like I could just install them on my '87 and it would tear the road up. I can't thank Dave enough he really came through for me with a fine set of carburetors at price that didn't break me. I can say that Dave saved my bike, the is no way I would have been able to pay those Fleabay prices. This site has some good members and Dave "utadventure" is right at the top of the list! Thanks

We had Swan's in our pond when I was a kid and every now and then one would turn up with their neck's bitten half off thanks to those snapping turtles. My dad was wild for Tuttle soup and could spot those things while driving like he had radar, I can't count the time we'd be driving home from church or something and out the door he flew, 20 minutes later he'd be dragging some huge creature back to the car. Soon all the neighborhood kids got a Tuttle anatomy lesson as he butchered the critter and everybody but me got Turtle soup, no way was I going to eat that! My dad was one of a kind

Well it looks like I got really lucky utadventure has just what I need and he gave me a hell of a deal. It would not go to far to say he save my Venture and Dave has offered me help in the past. I cant thank him enough, he is what make this fourm such a great place and between both carb sets I think I'll have one good set and the end of big headach. Thanks Davd your a lifrsaver

'84 vsx1200 popping out carbs

I'm not sure if the 4 brush plate will fit, but if you search for "First Gen Starter Mod" you'll find a great way to improve grounding the starter, many have tried this fix and swear by it and you'll save money -

I thought the same thing, but it takes the problem a long time to raise its ugly head. There is a way to repair the 2 brush starters by improving the ground, they have a thread on the mod. It appears to work, but if I'm going to dig out the starter I'd just as soon get the best thing I can find and the 4 brush starters work great and Dingy's heavier battery cables work great as well. -

And I'm hoping the slow cranking when hot is due to "sticky" rings from the seized engine and this will loosen up as I run the engine. I used diesel oil (because it has zinc) and added some STP (with zinc) and a bottle of ZZDP Max (zinc!!!) hoping this lubes up everything. maybe I need some marvel mystery oil or seafoam in the oil (that's OK as I bought more oil to purge the crank case again...... Could my starter brushes be tired?? I read somewhere that the first gen starters are lame and should be replaced with second gen starters (or brush sets?) but that starter under the from exhaust pipes will suck! (I sprayed the studs figuring I'll have to do that sucky job..). I promise you the slow cranking is the result of the 1st Gen's use of 2 brush starters mine would hardly turn the motor over when cold, but when hot I had one shot at it then it was, sit let things cool down for a while and hope like hell . The second gen's and the VMax's use 4 brush starters and beleave me there is no comparison Hot, Cold it doesn't matter my motor spins and spins. It is no longer a concern for me, this bike will turn over when asked to. -
Thanks for the advice, I do keep an eye on eBay and Pinwall I think I got half my CB650 and this bike from them. The first gen's seem to be getting rarer than just a few years ago and their important parts like carb's and TCI's seem to have more gold in them $$$ than before, if I can find a cheap set I can use for a core I'm worried that I buy a set with the same problem I have now and I'm not really in the position to shell out the big buck's a good set will run me. Hopefully something will turn up this seems to be turning out to be a very long term project

Vonwolf replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am talking about the caped off Idel mixture screws they can create a lean condition that can cause the motor to backfire and the bike will not run well without the air box, it took me while to figure that one out how else are you going to know the slides are working right? I still haven't figured that one out. Good luck with your build -
I removed my Carburetors, disassembled them, cleaned, replaced parts that looked bad and reinstalled them on my bike. It ran well with the exception of backfiring and popping. At this time I realized I had not addressed the pilot screws? I looked in there and saw that 3 of the 4 carb's pilot screw were completely ground down, no slot for a screwdriver what so ever, so off come the carburetors. I soaked the screws for weeks, drilled them out and first tried the Torx Bit and as last resort the ever useless "easy out". Nothing has worked and I wrecked one of the carburetors so now I'm in the market for a very used Carburetor Set that will work on a '87. The diaphragm and slides are unimportant to me, actually I have most of the new parts I need, the only thing I'm concerned with is removing the Pilot Screws as I have a new set. If anyone has carb's they can let go of I'd appreciate letting me know. Thanks Pete

Backfiring like that can be caused by a lot of problems, it might be running lean check the pilot screws make sure you can turn the mine were welded in place and wrecked my Carburetors, you can have a vacuum leak or it might be electrical. I'm not sure on your experience with these Ventures so forgive me if this is well known to you, but Ventures do not like to run with the air box off it will idle on choke but won't pull any RPM's. I hope this helps Good Luck -
Well, I finally got around to checking the Pilot screws and oh boy did I get a surprise. I have no idea how I’ve taken the carb’s off, cleaned them, replaced the needle valve and seats and all that jazz, but I failed to check the Pilot Screws? 3 of the 4 screw not only were locked in place, but even more fun the brass screw heads were completely destroyed there was absolutely nothing to work with. I soaked them, drilled them out, tried the Torx bit trick and a final desperate attempt with an easy out. All attempts proved futile and I finally destroyed one of the carb’s with the other 2 probably soon to follow. It looks like I will be needing a new carburetor set or give up on the old girl, I really don’t know how to proceed, but if I can find a reasonably priced Carburetor set I might go ahead with it, after all with all these screw-ups I’m starting to be pretty good with them. If anyone has a set of Carburetors that will work on an 87 Venture let me know, they don’t need to be perfect actually my internals are all good so the only thing I care about is that the Pilot Screws will come out, the slides and diaphragms can be Swiss cheese that not important. Let me know if you have something.

There is an Excel spreadsheet made by A member here on the board, I wish I knew the name to credit these spreadsheets to, but I did copy them. They will give you a good idea of your final drive. This is for a Vmax Final Drive-VMax Speed based on Gear Ratios.xls This is for A Venture Final Drive-1st Gen Venture Speed based on gear ratios.xls They will give you an Idea of your final gearing, I had nothing to do with making these and I wish I could credit the maker as this is very useful and someone put in a great deal of work

Carb Rebuild Kit?
Vonwolf replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, come to think of it I did calm down on the last 2 carbs and I used the vise to press them out and after taking the screens off I did use the vise to press them back in, but that was much more of a straight shot. I have to learn much of this on the fly as I was not real familiar with this type of carburetors, but after taking them apart a half dozen times I'm starting to slowly figure things out although I think the pilot screws might be their doom as 3 of them are locked tight -
Carb Rebuild Kit?
Vonwolf replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, like I said they were tough it's hard to get a straight shot at the valve seats. I used a long punch a little smaller than the seat diameter, clamped the carbs in a vice and use the punch to drive the seats out with a hammer. It's not a straight shot, there 's a bit of an angle, but it will drive them out without messing up the opening in the carb. It takes a great deal of conviction to hammer away on the carbs, but mine came out clean. It's quite a bit easier to install the new ones as long as you can get the screens off and back on without messing them up -
Carb Rebuild Kit?
Vonwolf replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The needle valve seats are a bear to get out and I read on some of the VMax forums its best to just replace the needle valves. Not good news for me because they are just as hard to install, I would have gladly skipped that part had I knew. I'm not sure the advice from the VMax forms was correct and I did manage to get the job done with my limited experience in these carb's so it can be done, Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable members will chime in. -
I've gotten the bike to run pretty well again I even managed to get the carb's synchronized somewhat, but I still get the old popping and some backfiring. I finally got around to looking into the pilot screws and got a very bad surprise not only were 3 of them stuck, but they have already been butchered to the point I had nothing to work with. Looks like the carb's are coming back off and from what I've been reading I have my work cut out for me if I can save them at all I'm not confident. I just can't beleave this has gotten by for so long I must be slipping, I've never had much luck extracting damaged screw's and I doubt I'll buy new carb's I might have to put her down

Popping noise on decell and at idle.
Vonwolf replied to ricksbike's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have had that same popping at deceleration forever that sounds like an air leak in the exhaust, that lighter to the gasket's sounds like a good idea. Both my exhausts have a hole at the bottom right where the collectors are, but I think they were made that way for some reason. I'd be really interested if you figure it out, I haven't had any luck tracking mine down -
Need Help synchronizing my Carburetors
Vonwolf replied to Vonwolf's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I finally found some valves like Prairiehammer posted, I'm in a small town that apparently is not big on aquariums as it took me a long time to find them. I'm glad I did they calmed my needles right down and I was able to sync the carbs well enough to have the bike run pretty good, I'm still getting some backfire through the exhaust when I let up on the gas, but it runs good for how thrashed this bike has been. The motor wasn't pulling very much vacuum probably about half what it should, I couldn't find any vacuum leaks so I'm not really sure what the problem is
