Haven't had a real runin with demons lately, but if you're selling I ain't buying.
I would think ignition switch as well as the 'demon' seems to be centrally located. Don't know how 2nd gens are put together, but off hand I would pull the plug on the back of the switch and use a jumper in the plug to see if things will happen normal like. If they seem normal then I would replace the switch.

or somethin' falls off......
Just to keep the record straight, an 87 is a first gen.

Radio off or on?
or maybe the early warning signal for peg scapping.

So if it's really the clutch basket does it whine at a cetain RPM not matter what gear you're in? If it's not RPM related then in my opinion it has to be in the tranny and not the clutch. Maybe this is why some have luck with a basket change and others do not.

You may also have a bad diaphram in that cylinder\carburator.

I didn't think mine would lock either, but then it works just so, it's tricky but it works.

Is it the starter button.
Do you have lights
Does it turn over or attempt to turn over at all
Check the battery voltage when turned off
Remove negative lead from battery terminal and see if you have spark when touching it back on. Something may be draining the battery.
How much lights etc. are you running other than stock.
Just some thoughts

Now you've got me wondering????????? You take the bolts from the water pump, cut off the 'eads, and use them for the stator install. Now what 'appens to that there water pump, don't it need the bolts anymore or do ya just glue the 'eads back on, bye.

Sorry Carl, it seems to me, that i can read something Sarcasm between the Lines. If so, again, sorry, didn't want to offend you in any Way. I didn't even realize that you're riding a '85 ....
None of that stuff in my life, lifes too short to waste, worrying of such things. If I did have an issue, you would receive a PM from me or maybe a visit, that's if you paid the airfare, because being Dutch I'm toooo cheap to pay for such things.
Glad to have you on site and appreciate your input, even the language is sometime cute, keep it up, it's enjoyable.

That insures that the Voltage is always above draining Battery Voltage.
It applies only for Bikes after 1985, because the Anti-Dive is operated by Electrics and this put a fair Amount of Load on the Charging System. 83-85 was the Anti-Dive operated by Hydraulic.
So I learn something everyday. Never gave that issue any thought seeing as I have an 85. Guess I can go back to bed now seeing as I've had my lesson for the day, don't want to gain too much knowledge in one sitting, got to leave something for tomorrow.
Old man said once: You will never die as long as you keep working, maybe that goes for learnin as well.
Thanks Squeese

I would pull the brake on and then read the volt meter and make sure it was just above 12 volts or no more than 1200 rpm.
Most of the time it would be less than a 1000 rpm.
Brad
Now why is this info so handy.

Kevin, yes, I had it on the centre stand when I was trying it. I may just have to draw on Carl's experience and infinite wisdom ( serious butt-kissing here) for him to offer some of his unending enlightenment......
Haven't had that for a long time, so long I can't remember ever anybody doin it, but come on over, you're welcome as always, and I'm sure we'll get it working elpronto.

I've done both and both or either could be the problem. Need some help, just ask.

That would be my guess, if it was the front you would probably notice it in the steering, vibration, or something like that.

Not really all that good with numbers, but maybe you could tell us what you are running for lights etc. The other problem may be your battery, if it is losing it's charge your stator will have to work hard to keep up and so get itself fried. Measure the voltage of the battery before startup in the morning and then see how long it takes to get the battery up to 13.9 volts. Your battery should read minimum 12 volts before start up and it should only be a minute or two to get it back to 13.5 - 14.5 volts. If it doesn't give you 12 volts before start up, take the negative cable off over night and do another read. If the voltage is down below 12 have the battery tested or just replace it if it's over 2 years old.

All good replies and I'm totally agreed with pulling the whole system apart. If your brakes fail to do what you expect if them, then you may have a lot of time to think about it later, along with the fact that another set of brakes on another scoot cost more than what you would spend now in time or money.

If and when you do change the CB attenna you need to set the SWR. If that is not right you will still burn out the transmitter. I thought you might know this, but then a reminder is a lot cheaper than a new CB. The taller attenna will give you more distance than the shorter one, but that to me means very little as I ride mostly with 1st gens, and when I ride with any others I just slow down to about 1\2 speed so they don't get tooo far behind, or I let them lead and then I save the wear and tear on 4th and 5th gears.

You need to have a weee bit of play on the handle when it's released, do you have that? This is starting to really drive me bonkers. How much tourque on the clutch springs? Did you line up the clutch plates properly? Maybe somebody put in the wrong size push rod, so maybe check that out, pull the cover and make sure it returns all the way and allows the clutch to come together completey. I'm gone all day, 'see' you tonight.

What is it and what's it used for?
-
Not sure I got it all right but here goes:
83 + 84 are the same except for the difference in models which is slight and can be worked with
85 the travel trunk changed and got larger, and it is the fastest of all.
86 it became a 1300 up from the 1200. trunks got a little bigger, trunk and side bags were bolted on and more changes were incorporated overall, + some changes in the radio setup

I only wish that I knew someone, personally, who knew enough about bikes (particularly the model line that I have) who could go over it and clue me in to the exactness of any possible issues with it. But I do not, and will just have to play everything by ear (dinner?).
We live and (hopefully) learn .
Bongobobny is just around the corner, Marcarl is not that far away, JGerom is a stone's throw away. Hey, we're all over you there bud, post away and you'll entice us to come and see you. Fact is that tomorrow evening, June 30, we are having dinner in Fort Erie, come and join us and see if we're likeable.

Glad I found this site, such nice and helpful people and now I know all about pushing and turning on buttons and getting tunes from a radio. This is soooooooo awesome!!!!!!!

Can't argue here. It all seems to be very true.

Keep in mind that you didn't buy a new bike, and the starting issue is common if you don't do it just right. It's gonna need some TLC from a loving owner and we're here to help you along. Ask all you want and we'll ask back and then get you answers and guide you through. Don't worry none, you'll be on the best scoot going in no time at all.

With 2 up I have no problem with 1200 rpm, but it will take off from idle, 1000, if I'm carefull. Normally I just clear the carbs with a little blip on the throttle and we're away.
