  1. I've had a K&N Air filter on my 85 VR for the past 6 years without any issues. Works exactly like the OEM filter for me. Perfect fit seems to have the same air restriction as the original. Item#: YA-1283
  2. I purchased a K&N air filter 6 years ago with no issues. Bike runs 100% like the original filter. On an 85 VR. http://www.knfilters.com ***Replacement Air Filter*** Item#: YA-1283
  3. The slave cylinder is behind the middle gear housing. If the slave is leaking then the middle gear would retain the leaky break fluid. The reason why you use brake fluid is that of the seals and gaskets inside your clutch master cylinder and slave bushings. If you used hydraulic fluid it would eat them away quickly and you would have a much bigger issue at hand. Here is a link to inspect your slave cylinder and repair if needed. Also look to see if you're leaking out of the sight window on your master cylinder and check all the connections to see if you see any possible leaks. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66302-Slave-Cylinder-Replacement Hydraulic fluid is incredibly corrosive to most seals.
  4. Your LCD screen runs through the main board behind the headlamp, never had to work on that on mine. Hopefully, someone knows more than i on that subject. Here is a post on a acting up LCD screen. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?33328-Information-Display-Repair
  5. If you are having clutch sticking issues or a sloppy engagement of the clutch then check the slave cylinder. It's usually a culprit in these 1st gens. if your constantly adding oil to your clutch master cylinder and don't see any leaking around the handguard then most likely it's leaking into the engine. there are lots of posts in the tech section that will guide you in rebuilding the slave cylinder. took me about 35 min, getting the bugger out is kinda a pain. but definitely doable.
  6. Dot 3 or 4 won't be a problem and the mixture of the two won't affect anything seeing both are a poly-glycol base and the main difference between the two are their boiling points. If it hasn't been changed in a long while then the wicking of moisture would affect the compression of the oil.
  7. Going to check a few more things in the bike to be 100% sure, but finding a legit 33-year-old board that is in better shape then mine is probably like winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning a few time. I would have better luck going the route you went and get something new, and programmable.
  8. Hey guys, New to the forum. Like the title says I'm having some issues with my 85 VR xvz12. My VR had run great for the last 2 years I've owned it, just had to fill her up, change the oil and go. But my son and I went for a short drive around central Washington and got caught in a freak rainstorm. We stopped and got under some shelter and afterwards the bike just wouldn't start. After about 2 hours of fiddling around with her, she just started up but ran like crap. The Tachometer was dead "at Zero", and she ran like she was on two cylinders. Got her home and blew her off with a leaf blower and wiped her dry. The following weekend, she was still running sick. So I pulled the battery and checked both coils (primary and secondary check), pickups, spark plugs, spark plug cables, emergency cut off switch, pickup coil, stand switch and the voltages were in the ballpark from my service manual. I then read a post from DonB about testing from the TCI connectors to see if there is a short in a wire, I followed his guide and didn't find any reason to think I had a short. So the old girl is still reading zero on the Tach, failing the fire on two cylinders, and starting is hit or miss. I'm at my wit's end really, I figure at this point it's the TCI. It sitting in its original horrible location, and I don't really know how or why I would want to take it out if I'm thinking about ordering a new SPARKER TCIP4 from IgniTech. Is there anything that I'm missing or have not thought of. I have scanned this forum pretty hard. PS: with the massive amount of information on this forum I'm gonna have to pony up the 12 bucks
  9. Good to hear man, glad it worked out well for you. My 85 VR's TCI just kicked the bucket last weekend when my son and I were caught in a freak rainstorm, Tac dropped to the ground (dead) and started firing on two cylinders like a limp mode, limped her home in 1st gear. Checked the voltages on everything "All Good", Figure the only thing left was the TCI. Spent the next 4 hours digging that little SOB out to find that she been cooked well. You think an 85 would be as plug and play as your 83?, Thinking about staying up till 5am deciphering some broken English and getting one.
