  1. I can tell.Yamaha couldnt have made it more difficult.$7.00 part.Forever getting the bolts, covers out and off to get to it.Thanks for the great pictures.
  2. because of the excellent pictorial posted here I got the filter on.It is a real pain to get to.hard to beleive how many bolts have to be removed. Then I had to go to autozone and buy a longhandled angled needlenosed piars to get the hose clamps loose.I am putting it back together. And then it might be that the filter wasnt even the problem. But as bad as the filter looked it needed replaced. It might even be the 1999 one.So time well spent, just a pain to do.I thought about putting it under the seat but that makes the gas run uphill.I didnt think that was a good idea.I can only imagine how much fun it will be trying to get the small phillips head screw back in to secure the front cover.
  3. great how to tutorial.I dont really need to know but if it doesnt have points system how does it work.Like a purely electrical pump with some sort of switch that opens and closes with the ignition key?
  4. wow! man, doesnt get any clearer than that. Thanks so much.I had a ford van once, filter got clogged, not enough fuel line to run without it, took a hammer and nail, back on the road.not an option here. Thanks a bunch.
  5. I had no idea it had points.I assumed it was just like any other pump with diaphragms, one way valves etc.Your link has same part number and 2 prices. Both are the same, will work on a 99 I assume. So the cover on my pump comes off, replace this part, good to go? Thanks.
  6. I dont think any bike for the last several decades was made without a mesh screen filter on the petcock as it goes up in the tank.I totally forgot about that.I will definitely do the listen thing with the gas cap.Where would you buy a fuel pump, or any parts that you might need? There are so many places. Which is best?
  7. 99 venture.Beautiful bike,51,000 miles.I am the second owner. My owners manual and repair manual showing the lever of the fuel petcock to be the pointer, not the blunt end.3 oclock is off, 6 oclock is on,12 oclock is reserve. The bike should run on on or reserve unless its almost out of gas.yesterday it wouldnt start. The tank looked bone dry.We had an imitation gas scare here in texas so finding a station with gas was a little hard. When I did all I could get was premium gas.So I took my gascan for my lawnmower, filled it up with premium and went to the bike.I poured the whole can it, it filled up the tank.problem is the can says it only holds 2.8 gallons. So I wasnt out of gas.I tried every position. Finally when it appeared according to the manual I had it on reserve and held the bike upright, level, the bike started and ran fine.I figured it just needed to fill up the fuel pump. Then this morning i was headed off to a CMA get together in a town 25 miles away.I had turned the lever to 3 oclock, meaning off to me.I put it back at 6 and again at 12.The petcock was dripping gas a little.I had pulled the choke out, so I pushed it back in.Finally it started and ran fine. The gas gauge showed almost full.Maybe 9/10 full.About 20 miles towards the 25 I intended going the bike quit like I had turned off the switch.I pulled off, tried the petcock in different positions, the bike started again. I got lost, stopped for directions, the bike was once again hard to start. At that point I said i better just go home.I was going up a fairly steep hill and the bike quit again.2 guys helped me get it to level ground. While waiting on a wrecker the bike would start up and take a throttle twist just fine. But i was afraid to try it again.here are my thought 1.bad gas.The gas was selling like crazy here because everyone was freaking out buying gas, filling cans, etc.Maybe the pumps had got down to trash in the bottom. 2.I put the gas in a lawnmower can, maybe it had some junk in it. 3.The bike wasnt really on empty or it would have held more than 2.8 gallons. 4.the petcock might be bad. 5.When the choke is pushed in as far as it goes it still sticks out a couple inches. That appears like how it is made.It will pull out about 2 more inches when choking it on cold starts. 6.The tube from the tank to the petcock wasnt kinked or broken 7.maybe its the fuel pump. They cost $16.00. I have no idea how likely that is. 8.It doesnt show any kind of fuel filter on these bikes in my manual. My plan: dump all the gas out.Buy a new unused gascan, put gas in the bike.Take off the sidecovers, check the fuel pump. The manual shows turning the petcock from off, to reserve, to on.The fuel should run out in all positions except off.If it doesnt run ou when its on or reserve I suspect the fuel pump.Any and all input appreciated.
  8. yipee.I went to a place today that specializes in all things autobody. They took some sort of strange camera, took a picture of the paint. But the paint was placed right on the fairing.A guy looked through it, took the picture. Then he put it in a machine, the machine somehow made paint that matched.Only $21.And they put it into a rattle can so i could do it.I thought that was pretty cool.I showed them the marble silver yamaha sold me.She said well, that certainly doesnt match does it. i said no mam, but now I have some that will.Well worth my time.
  9. well.disappointed.They had one for a demo day recently.its gone. They said they would have one soon.Very vague. As soon as I get to see one i will post all my impressions.I have owned 2 83s,an 01 and now my 99.I get what you are saying about sbc to 6 also.Time will tell. They might become another vtx 1800 or vulcan 2000.only good on paper.
  10. I think maxxim yamaha in plano texas has one.I did not think any would be available.perhaps i read wrong or its just to show and not sell.I know many people are mad about it being a vtwin. That to me is like being mad because a camaro went from a straight 6 to a sbc. The vtwin hopefully has been gone through to fix anything that might break before it reaches 100,000 road miles. Unlike harley. I love harleys, just dont want one.I have owned 2 before including an ultra classic. The spec sheet says 947 pounds. My 99 weighs about 850.I can't imagine adding another 100 pounds. I considered briefly once buying a 2000 cc vulcan. But some bikes are just too heavy. If this new venture doesnt have terrific geometry and balance all the fancy features in the world won't make a difference. It reminds me of the bmw 1600 gtl. Loaded with stuff. In the most recent survey bmw and ducati ranked the top2 least reliable motorcycle companies with failure of something major in the first 4 years of ownership at 26% compared to 11% for yamaha, which ranked #1 in most reliable. I bet it is beautiful though.I do admit, my 99 is topheavy, a chore to pull up off the sidestand, a ***** to turn around in my driveway, but once moving its great as we all know. I personally do not enjoy riding my motorcycle in town due to its weight and unwieldly handling at slow speed. But transcontinental does show what the venture is intended for. Intown, i would just own a kickstart 400 if that was my riding habit predominantly.
  11. very interesting information about california, matching etc. Thanks so much. That explains everything.I will do the painting once I get the color. It is a small place to paint.I will blend it in.It doesnt have to be perfect, just look good, say 90% quality.
  12. http://www.colorrite.com/wizardresults.cfm this why colorite is not right. As you can see the lighter goldish color on my bike is not even a choice. The marble silver for the darker part of the paint scheme is right. But I need the other color.

  14. My 99 has scratches on the fairing and a couple other places. It is the 2 tone one with parts of it being a grey metallic and the main color being sort of gold.I ordered 2 cans of paint $60 each to match the gold color. Both of them the wrong color even though Yamaha International assured me it was the right color. They used my vin to tell me what to buy.TouchUp direct said the second one was yellowish grey metallic.I need something kind of yellowish. But, both cans are grey.No yellowish or gold looking tint to it at all.Now I cant mail it back to them because shipping companies here have to have a hazmat license to do so.One ups place has the license but it costs too much to send it.I talked to the girl at touch up.She was clueless. She asked, seriously, can you send us a piece of the bike and maybe we could match it that way? When I did a search myself the goldish color of a 2002 looks like it matches what I need for my 99.Any input appreciated. This is not a custom paint job, its factory. All paint chips for a 99 have no gold color, all are grey.A 98 royal star tour deluxe looks like it has the right color.I sure dont want to blow anymore money.I probably will go to an autopaint store.Perhaps they can match it.If I am doomed to paint the whole fairing, then the whole fairing wont match.
  15. probably will be like riding a heavier roadliner
  16. I have been approved, waiting on finance details.2007 venture.erfect condition, new tires, beautiful blue.35,000 miles.$6100.kbb is 5665.They were asking 6500, got it down some.I can't wait. Its still riding weather here.
  17. went to make a deal.Dang it all.My title for the suzuki still hasnt come in the mail.I had the dealer check on its location yesterday. All they could say was the processing part is complete and i should be getting it soon. I found another for $2900,long way from me.60,000 miles.Must have some issues somewhere for that price.I rode 130 miles onetime to look at a goldwing."good condition".It was a piece of crap. You never know.
  18. yep.shocks,clutch noise,maintainance.
  19. what you might not know, and what I wish i had known prior to buying the c50 is about the cam chain tensioners and cam chains.Between 35,000 to 50,000 miles the tensioners can not hold tension on the chains because they have lengthened so much due to poor design of chain links and materials. They fly off, motor is ruined, replacement parts are over 1200 bucks. Therefore making it a disposeable motorcycle. The old design 800 would go 100,000 miles. But for the volusia and up it was changed to meet epa requirements. They run great, but who needs a bike that breaks so easily?
  20. my question would be why so few miles? What was done to keep it from disintegrating since it must have sat most of the time.Replacing a clutch as suggested or anything major should not be necessary for another 50,000 miles. But as mentioned, the tires have a code, the wear date. They can look new and be unsafe. You can google how to read wear date codes.Or perhaps the owner knows and can prove it.
  21. I was on here when I had the 01 rsv.Recently left the forum.Tomorrow I am going to try to trade in my 09 szuki c50 for a 2005 rstd black and red with 39,000 miles on it.Immaculate condition. This would make my 5th royal star.My 01had 89,000 miles which is about half a lifespan for a royal star.Only it was severely abused before i got it,plus i could only get a bonded title.I had the chance to unload it so got rid of it.I actually prefer the rstd 05 style t the venture. The weight of the tourpack and the windsail effect of the fairing bug me.Its a Indian tradein bike. They are asking 4995.I have found a privately owned one for 43,but has more miles. What do ya'll think? I really miss my big star.too bad they are never going to be made again.
  22. Just my opinion, but here goes.I think heavy large displacement bikes are dead. The wing,f6b(wing minus a trunk),bmw 1600,are here to stay since the wing has been king since 1975.The 1800 versions do seem lighter though they are not.I and others have flocked to lighter cheaper bikes. The vrod 1130 ccs has oer a 100 hp.The scout 1000 ccs has 100 hp.The bmw 1000 rr has 193 hp.I think the high performance retro muscle cars and resto mods craze is fueling it.I am a baby boomer. No way i would want some 400 hp civic. But give me a challenger with 400 hp and i would buy it for sure.I think a 600-650 pound high performance bike built for different occasions even if its expensive would be the future.Like the b king.detuned hyabusa.Rideable on the street.Suzuki has no money so they are out of the touring business.Kawasaki builds ships, they are only in motorcycles for racing and motocross.Their vaquero and voyager are failures. But the fz7,fz9,new honda 650,kawasaki 650,the little harley street 750, those bikes are meeting the demographic demands. Most people want a bike for a while, then get tired of it.Put 10% down on a 30,000 dollar harley, finance if for 84 months.in a year regret sets in, they are for sale.If i understand correctly yamaha and honda have the most money. They make between them lawnmowers, cars, pianos, motorcycles.I was surprised to not see the yamaha 1300 do better than it has. It is cheaper than a roadking, but not by much,so people buy bikes that do not depreciate as quickly and get the harley.I saw a guy that took a bike with a 298 pound motor and the finished bike only weighed 700 pounds when he got done with it.I think it might have been a goldwing based, not sure. The valkyrie already does that.I owned one before, not light at all if its fitted for touring. The v max due to its followers will always be around.Kinda like a 1000 hp shelby mustang. But you wont see shelbys by the large numbers. In a local harley dealer they have a ultra.$53,000! And someone will buy it. I think yamaha with the bolt and fz bikes hit a homerun.Personally I think all bmw bikes are ugly.Plus they have too many different models. I am afraid the venture is not coming back.
  23. I would get the indian roadmaster.I love the f6b, but controls are too far back.I think I know what yamaha is up to now.It ain't motorcycles. They have made a car.wicked and cool looking car.probably will sell for the price of 4 new ventures.
  24. I am thinking nothing is coming out.I like the 1300 overall, but am disappointed yamaha doesnt seem interested in a touring bike.
  25. No venture reveal, biggest bike they have now is the vmax, after that its the 1300.disappointing.
