  1. Hey I am sorry about your accident...I know it was a year ago, so by now I am sure you are well and you are probably up and running with your "New" '89 one. I,m looking to turn to the Darkside with a 99 Venture and I was wondering what car tires you guys recommend. I live in Tampa and I do a lot of highway driving, so cornering is definitely no much of my worries. So far these are my choices.   3. Hello Everybody and Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone had a good Holiday Season. Mine, as crazy as always between friends and family. This year we had a very warm Christmas and New Year in St Petersburg and it was Awesome!!! Finally back to project... I have found someone that will re-sleeve the engine, so I am going to take advantage of it and have him putting the engine together. The deal is that I get all the parts and he puts it back together. Now, I am here about to order the parts but I am having a problem being able to figure out which Plane Bearing for the connecting Rod. I know I am supposed to match the crankshaft numbers to the rod number to pick the right one. Where do I find such information? I have been looking at service manual and I can't find it. Is there a cheat sheet anywhere? I am sure not many of you here have dealt with this since we know these engines are forever but may be someone have rebuild one engine here and there. Thanks!
  4. I am buying a new piston, but I am keeping the rings. The old piston is definitely useless. I believe in an engine with only 4000 mi the difference between the new one and the other 3 should be none, don't you think?
  5. I have asked two mechanics and they have told me pretty much the same thing. I still have one mech friend to check it out. So far it seems that a drill stop will solve it. I believe is small and low enough to not cause trouble. I have checked the plane bearings for the connecting rod and they show no damage, which is an indication that the crankshaft did not suffer. I'll let you know...Stay tune!
  6. @Condor, definitely contemplating that idea. I'll definitely want to do it right cause I feel like keeping this bike for a while. The stand was easier to make than I thought and is definitely helpful. I little high for me but nothing that a one step stool can't fix...lol.
  7. Definitely a good option @Condor. The scary part is that some times is hard to find out the miles on it. And the fat that this bike is only 4000 miles makes it even harder. I have been looking for a stripped engine since all I need is the cylinder head. So far nada...
  8. Hey guys, hope everyone had a fantastic and plentiful Happy Thanksgiving. Mine as always full of great food and family. Well I finally got to it and the news is not very good. The sleeve has a 3/4 in long crack right at the bottom, which I am assuming it was caused by the piston when it got hit by the crankshaft and broke a couple of pieces from the piston's skirt. Now, by measuring the length of the stroke, I can see that the crack seems to be way below from the bottom of piston. The sleeve comes out from the cylinder head about 5/8 of an in. That makes me wonder if this crack can be ignore since it seems to never be reached by the cylinder rings. So here is the question: Can that crack be ignore? If NO, all I need is to replace the rod, piston and necesary gaskets and I am back in the game. If YES, then the sleeve needs to be replace which I really don't know if that is possible. If not possible, then I'll need to replace the cylinder head which at around $800 is not really fun. I am having a friend bike mechanic coming over next week to give me his diagnostic. I am very interested in knowing your advise and opinion. I believe this forum's wisdom is worth in gold. And here are the pictures...   10. Hey guys! Awesome advise and info from all of you. Thank you very much. I did reorganize my shop (garage) today so I have room to do this in a very organize matter. I was thinking about doing it while on the frame but I think that will be much more laborious and dangerous. I do not plan to buy anything until I put it apart. My biggest fear is that the cylinder is damage and that is a BFT... @Condor I know exactly what you mean. Being there, done that...Thanks god for books, pictures and zipbags. I am going to try to document the whole thing and take as many pictures as possible. I would welcome any possible improvement you guys know I can do to the engine while is out, if any... The previous owner treated this bike excelently so everything is in great shape. All I need to do is get the engine working. For those who have pull the motor out... Did you elevated the bike from under the wheels so there is more clearance? What did you use to pull it out (jack, muscle, friends)? Keep the great advice coming... Thank you!!!
  11. Well I made up my mind...I am going for it! I am going to take it appart and repair the engine. With only 4000 original miles it would be a crime to not do it. The only thing I am praying for is that the cylinder did not get damaged... I'll keep you posted guys...this is going to be quite the adventure...   12. Thanks for the offer. I'll definitely keep you in mind. Luckily I have the manual too. Wouldn't do it with out it. If the cylinder is not damage it will cost less than $400...That would be nice. I'm going to see is it is possible to have clearance either under or from top. In the mean time I am just try to see what our gurus know and advice. Obviously there is no rush and the good weather to work on it is just upon it. Have you worked on RS engines before? I've worked on them a lot but not to this extent. They are amazing and practically build to never being open until 200k plus miles if anything.   14. @Flyinfool LOL...you are right on the pizza part. I am asking here for ideas. That is one that we have talked about and will look into. So far I have not found anything that makes reference to it. @etcswjoe Thank you! Definitely looking at that possibility.
  15. @Flyingfool I removed the oil pan and was able to see it from there. Also, I looked with camera inside cylinder from top and under and it seems ok... @Freebird definitely seems to be the easiest, fastest cheapest option. Either way the handling of the engine is what worries me the most. Any suggestions?
  16. OK Guys here it goes... I just got a 1999 Royal Star Venture which looks like just came out of the show room with only 4270 original miles. Yup! You are reading right, ONLY 4270 original miles. Even better, the price tag ONLY $1650. I know, I know, you are asking what is the catch, well here it is... Two month ago the owner went to start it and heard a loud pop in the engine. Luckily he did not try again and rushed to diagnose the problem. After long search he discover the number 2 cylinder suffer a hydro lock. Connecting rod is bent and piston skirt got damaged by getting hit by cam counter balance. So far it looks like the cylinder is not damaged buy the only way to know will be when open. Talking to previous owner, he told me that a few days before he had totally redone the carbs, which makes me suspect the number tow carb floater must have gotten stock and hence the flood. Well, since I am in love with RS I couldn't pass the chance to have this beautiful bike for this amount of money and lunch myself into the challenge of fixing it. My question to you is what would you do? Would you try to fix the engine or just buy a low mileage engine and just swap them? (This sims so far the cheapest way) Have anyone done either one of these? I have read the books and the most difficult part seems to be the handling of the heavy engine? I'll be very thankful to hear from the wisdom of the GURUS here in this great forum.   17. @VerntureVet thanks for the tip. I installed the new one today and nothing. @yamagrl Thanks for the tips and link. I have done all that but I planned to do it all over again because now that all components have been tested and proven right all is left to do is restart from zero and go over every connection and wire. Wish me luck, this bike has become a challenge and a nightmare...(Fun though)

  19. @Beau-Kat @Freebies Ok replaced CDI and that's not it either. One more thing is Ignition System Diode. It must be test twice by reverting the leads. 1st test comes correct, second because the way is described is a little uncertain. It says is supposed to show 0 or very little continuity. I'm getting 8 Ohms. Is that little continuity? I have tested another diode same way but is a 2001 650 and the diode part number is different. This one shows 0.1 Omhs for the second test which makes more sense when saying "little continuity". Could this be the cause of the second/rear cylinder not getting a spark?

  22. Hey Beau-Kat, thanks for asking...NOPE... Changed pickup coil and nothing. Same symptoms. There is only one more thing I need to try. Originally I was told it needed a new CDI box, so I went I bought one used on eBay and got the same results. What are the odds that 2 different boxes would produced the same symptom. I even put a CDI box from an V Star 1100 to see if it would do anything and same. So, I am gonna have to bite the bullet and install a brand new box ($275 none refundable). Is the last thing I can think off...adter that I thing I am just going to take it to the shooting range and use it as a prop...UGH! Thanks for asking... Stay tune
  23. Im appealing to the wisdom of this site to find a mistery. Well here goes. I'm not getting a spark on second cylinder. I've gone thru the diagnose on the clymer's manual and all indicates is the igniter unit. I've changed it twice and same. I've switched the wires from the front primary coil to the second and I get a spark. Hence it's not the coil. A mechanic friend said it was the pickup coil. I changed it. Same symptom. Both sparks and caps tested and good. The only thing left is the stator, which test fine and produces spark in both coils. Any suggestions? Thanks!
