Ordered an F4, 17.5" clear, basically the same size of the o.e. windshield. The p.o. of my '06 apparently used something that didn't agree with the original windshield compostion and really blurred it up and I'm really looking forward to getting this installed so I don't have to strain my eyes. Thanks for all your input on this subject. I really appreciate this website and all the good people here! Sincerely, Chris

That vent option is pricey! The only time I get really uncomfortable in the heat is idling at a stop. I'd probably like it but I'm not springing for it. Still flip/flopping but I'm leaning for the F4 stock replacement.................today.

"Rocks and a bird"? Sounds like you were ridin' an enduro! The F4 has the advantage of being fabricated from Lexan. The F4 also comes with a 4 year warranty, but I couldn't find any details on their site. The Clearview has a 6 month warranty and, it comes with a protective film that you can leave in place for 30 days and "test-ride" it. If you feel you didn't make the right choice, you can send it back and exchange it for a different style. I like that, plus the Clearview is about $25 more affordable. Sounds like they are both reputable companies. I'll toss a coin.

Needing to replace the windshield on my '06 RSV (o.e.) and have narrowed it down to either the Clearview or the F4. We ride all year depending on conditions. Not going with a vent, keeping it close to original size. Any experience with either company's product good and bad?

I let my '88 sit last summer. Put less than 25 miles on it over a 12 month period and that's when the trouble started in the fuel lines and carbs. I put Yamaha parts in the carb rebuild and it was costly, but it starts as easy as my '06 with 10k on it and runs smooth as silk at idle or on the road. Tough decision...........maybe you should buy both of them!

I have an 88' and an '06. I always drop into 4th when passing on the '06' but the 88' gets the job done by just cracking the throttle in 5th. Seems more like a difference in gearing maybe? The 88' has almost 67k on it and is still fun and powerful, but it has been taken care of and garage kept. I did have to have the carbs rebuilt this spring, but it really brought the engine back to life. Try to find any maintenance/repair invoices or maybe have an experienced 1st gen owner check it out with you. Also, if you do end up purchasing the bike, do yourself a HUGE favor and join Venture Riders. You'll be astonished at the knowledge level and support! Good luck!

Side Stand Question
H2O replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I agree! This is the worst side stand angle I've ever had on a bike before. I always dismount first then grab the handle bars and give them a tug to the port side before the wife moves and inch! We found out the first time we stopped and I jumped off like normal, not noticing the bike was standing almost vertically because of the slight grade we stopped on. While I stood there the bike started tipping to the right while my wife went to grab the handle bars gasping "CHRIIIIIIISS"! LOL. I would've watched her and the bike fall over but luckily one of the guys in the group we were with happened to be standing right there Johnny on the spot and stopped the whole fiasco! lol I didn't think about increasing the air in the suspension for the side stand, but I use my center stand about half the time and I've learned to grab the handle bar and the passenger hand rail and rock the bike 2-3 times and it seems like the harder I press down with my right foot on the center stand pad the easier it comes up, plus, emptying all the gear out of the trunks helps too. That said we love this bike. We have had just about all of them out there, even won a big new H.D. in '95 but me and more importantly, the wife, agree that this is one of the most comfortable bikes we've ever traveled on. -
Carb too rich Maybe?
H2O replied to BlueSky's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kevin, I was reading this thread because of the lean/rich issue I may be having. You and Cowpuc directed me to the float sticking after a recent problem I posted about fuel coming out of my vacuum advance. Rode to Sikeston and went to Lamberts Saturday. Somewhere around Garden of the Gods one of my buddies noticed smoke coming out of the right exhaust tip whenever I took off from a stop, or started the bike. I noticed the idle didn't sound too sharp anymore also. We stopped around 150 miles and I pulled the vaccum advance hose loose and saw no fuel. Thankfully the stuck float is working now. We made it through the 350 mile day. Apparently The bike seemed to have plenty of power, sounded great on the road at speed, but idled like it may be fouling another plug. They didn't notice it doing it on the return trip, but they said they weren't watching anymore either. They did say it looked like oil smoke, so I'm wondering if I have a two-fold issue. The bike sat all last summer, barely put 25 miles on her, and of course, I recently had the Yamaha carb kits installed by a local shop. Started it right up again this morning, without choking it. Sounds like it's okay again. Revved it a little and didn't see any smoke. Pulled the choke and it brought the idle up. Turned the choke off and found all the choke pins/rods going back in visually. After reading this thread I'm beginning to wonder if I should check the carbs some more since I don't need to choke start it. I always park the XVZ inside so I'm wondering if I need to set it outside overnight to see how it does. I'm going to pull the plugs tonight and see what they look like too. This is a good thread with some great info. Any advice? -
Carb Rebuild Kit?
H2O replied to Patmac6075's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hi. Recently had to have my carbs rebuilt on my '88 XVZ. Had it done at a local shop and we ended up getting genuine Yamaha part kits, which are available. They were about twice the price but some of the aftermarket places were out of stock and I coughed up the money for the Yamaha kits because I couldn't stand being left at home while everyone else was going places. Had a problem with the vacuum advance line spewing fuel out afterwards and fouling a plug. Traced the problem to a stuck float bowl that took a couple of "whacks" to the carburetor to fix. Apparently some debris had became dislodged in the fuel system during the process. Now my XVZ1300 starts in about a millisecond and doesn't even need to be choked! My bike has 66K miles on it now and has never started and ran so well! The local bike shop charged me $350 for the labor after I removed the fairing and electronics. Should've done it long ago. By the way, it was Prariehammer and Cowpuc here at this site who diagnosed my stuck float and gave me the good advise for dealing with it. Good luck! -
84 Venture gas seeping out of petcock

Looking at these pics I see a small in-line filter. Is this in the later model XVZ's too? -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So far, so good! Changed the oil. Changed the fouled plug. Installed new vacuum line between cylinder and vacuum advance. Tapped on the left front carb several times. Started it up and it's like it was several years ago when I bought it.....................hardly any choke needed and it's idling smooth as silk again. Let it run for two minutes while I tapped on the carb again. Throttled it up to around 2K a couple of times and let it idle. Turned it off. Pulled hose of dampener and turned key on.....no gas coming through vacuum hose anymore. Put vacuum hose back together. Started it up and rode a few blocks then came back. Listened to the smooth idle for a minute then turned it off. Pulled vacuum hose off dampener again. No fuel showing. Turned key on with vacuum hose still off and no fuel coming through. Wahoo! Fuel Line Check Valve??

Some of those ISP troopers might be offended by that Mason/Dixon quip, and I won't even ask why they would be watching out for you. lol Shawnee forest in your state is one of our favorite weekend rides! -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Okay, I'll replace the vacuum hose and the oil tomorrow evening, tap about on that carb and let you know how it turns out. I really appreciate your time and advice. If this all works out (or even if it doesn't) I'll buy you breakfast or dinner if you let me know the next time you're near here from upstate Illinois. -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The debris is exactly what the shop thought may have happened to it. The owner of the shop is supposedly reliable and he didn't want to use anything but genuine Yamaha carb kits and diaphragms, so I can somewhat assume he didn't screw the job up, but you never know unless you do it yourself I guess. Do you think I should do some "tapping" on that carb then? -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Holy S%#t! You're right, the oil level has raised over the maximum level line and it was fine before our ride Saturday! I'm lucky I made it home without a major mishap, but at the same time I'm lucky that vacuum line failed!! I'll try the "tap" trick but if I have to go into the carb(s) I'll need some direction. I removed all the fairing, side panels, head light, cowl etc. before I took it to a local shop because I thought it would help them save time and me money. Can I remove the side panel/air ducts and leave the radio and electronics in place, remove the air filter and air box then be able to get the carb assembly out through one side or the other, or will it be necessary to take all the fairing assembly off again? I'm assuming I have to remove all the carburetors..... -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the float is sticking and I have to go into the carb, can I go through the vacuum chamber cover/cap to access the float, or will I have to disassemble the whole carb rack assembly? -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes. Thanks for the photo. That's the line and the device, and if I follow mine from the left front intake like yours is showing, it's going up to what I assume is the nipple pointing straight back down from the vacuum advance or boost sensor, and mine has the right side intake capped/plugged off just as you're showing in the photo which I also assume is for synching the carbs. There was fuel spraying out at the top of this "dampener" from the worn out hose. I'm assuming again that I have some sort of problem in the left front carb causing fuel to be coming out of a vacuum hose, right? Just had the carbs rebuilt and before I could get home I had a fouled plug on the left front cylinder. The way it was sounding by the end of our ride Saturday I'd have to assume I've got another fouled plug. -
Fuel Line Check Valve??
H2O replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I can do that later. Just got the bike back from having the carbs rebuilt too. Thanks! -
Thought I was smelling gas each time we stopped during a 250 mi. ride last Saturday. It also sounded really crappy at idle the more we rode. Got back home and inspected it. Found a small diameter hose on the left side of the engine squirting fuel out whenever I turned the key on and the fuel pump ran. There is a small plastic device in the line with an arrow pointing up. The rubber line is worn out and developed a small hole just at the top where this plastic thing is located and squirting fuel when the pump runs. The line is coming straight down from something above the engine that I can see (but can't tell what it is) then going into this plastic "check valve" looking plastic device with an arrow pointing up, then into a slightly larger line, then into the front left cylinder. I need to replace the fuel lines obviously, but what is this device? It has a smaller diameter on the top side then it does on the lower side where it feeds into the engine. I removed the hose and the device and can see through it so I'm assuming it's not a check valve. What is it?

Thanks, I'll do that. Inspected the diaphragms and they appear to be one piece with the slides. Diaphragms are worn out. I checked with K&L and I could not find replacements. The Yamaha slides are $150.00 each. Going ahead with it. The bike still looks and rides great, and it's never failed us.
-
Yes, he's saying all there's pin holes in all of them. I'll have a talk with them about K&L Supply. Thank you for the advice!
-
Yes, he's using Yamaha parts. I removed all the fairing for him. Thanks, I feel a little better knowing this. Really love my XVZ. I believe she has a lot of miles left

65k. Overall great condition. Shop owner says bike is in good condition but the carbs have the age problem and are just worn out. He's got them all apart for me to inspect this morning
