Your welcome BlueSky, anytime!!
I never did buy a set of actual adapters,, I just used wooden blocks secured on a hunk of 1x6 and located em on the footpegs and crashbar mounts to lift with.. If you do that ya gotta really be careful that the blocks stay where ya put em while your lifting the bike off the ground, having them attached to a board REALLY helped with this, if you make em tight enough against the pipes it helps hold them in check too.. Been a while since I used/made em but it seems I had to cut some notches here and there to get the blocks to fit just right.. Also, kinda tricky cause the jack is putting side pressure on the bike till ya get it off the ground.. Not sure where my contraption is at or I would take a pic for ya.. Gotta also be really careful messing around with this stuff cause you dont want that 800 pound mouse trap to snap with you under it!! This highlift jack comes with tie down straps for attaching the bike to the jack,, again,, probably really smart to use them,, especially till you learn your jack and (this thought always goes thru my mind) whether you can trust the Chinese guy who welded the jack together:whistling:
Either this jack or a small floor jack model that I purchased years ago (and it is worn out now - all that is left of it from years of use is the frame work,, it was handy BUT lifted no where near as high as this one does) came with an optional equipment list that had a variety of actual "Y" adapters one could order... I always tend to go with making my own when I can cause I am cheap and I got a lot of junk laying around to use for creating my own disasters...
Telling ya,, hindsight being 20/20,, I wish I would have made a full skid plate, frame mounted for my first Venture.. Something strong enough to fully protect the undercarriage of the bike AND be strong enough to lift on - THAT would have solved a lot of headaches for yours truly!!

You are a wealth of information! Thanks Very Much!

Sounds like great fun! Post some photos of your bike when you get a chance. Congrats on your pool shooting skills! My cell phone gps is more accurate than my garmin. However, the garmin works from the satellites and the cell phones work from towers. If you are out of range of the towers, you have no gps! Something to keep in mind. I don't have my new to me 89VR registered yet. But I would like to see your route and if possible I will ride out to meet you along the way. Welcome to the site.

Sea foam has cured a few of my engines in the past, especially weed whackers and those pesky carb problems they have frequently. Just a spoonful or two in your weed whacker every so often works wonders. If you have to choke it to get it to run right, give Sea Foam a try.
I blame ethanol for most of the problems.
Where I live, there are several gas stations that sell alcohol free premium and at least one that I know of that sells alcohol free regular and premium. It does cost more.

Actually BlueSky,, may sound crazy but ol Tweeks does talk,, to me anyway... I dont always like what she has to say but we have gotten along for many many miles now... Your right,, she IS a character..
VERY GOOD OBSERVATION ON THE JACK!!!!!! What you have to use with this jack are jack adapters or you WILL be lifting on your pipes (no different than any other under frame motorcycle lift) - and THAT is NOT advisable!!
The exhaust on this old beater bike of mine has been used as a skid plate, welded, dented, rusted, broken, reconnected with hose clamps (if ya ever get a chance to look under it you should
) and got so many leaks in it now that I dont bother protecting it anymore..
Part of the fun for ME of riding beat up ol 700 dollar Yamaha's
Personally,, I have always thought about building a full military grade (like on my WLA) skid plate for my Venture's,, never got a round tuit, shoulda done that about 5 bikes ago..
Thanks for the reply. Could you post a photo of the jack adapters? Did you buy them or make them yourself? If you bought them, where did you buy? Thanks again!

I looked under my 89VR today and it looked like if I used a jack like yours it would contact the exhaust pipes which may not be a good idea. Does it lift the bike touching just the frame or engine or does it indeed come into contact with the exhaust pipes in the front?
Thanks! I really like that jack. And I just got a 25% off Harbor Freight coupon. And I really like your Venture! It has a lot of character. I wish it could talk!
Thanks

I use Gumout for high mileage engines. It has the same ingredient in it the Techron uses. And it works great also.

I would have agreed with you, Jeff if you had asked me last year when I had the '90, but this year, I have the '91 and IT is the fastest color, now.
Wow! That's a great looking 91 model! How many miles does it have on the odometer?

I checked the tires and both are Dunlop Elite IIIs with almost all of the tread left. They are both date stamped 2010 so I lucked out there. 2010 is when the previous owner bought it. I won't have to buy tires! He also mentioned taking it in for service. He took it to the Honda Dealer and they said they wouldn't work on a bike that old, but when they saw it they made an exception because of the condition.
The neutral switch worked today so maybe I was just having difficulty finding first gear yesterday. I thought I left it in first but my son noticed the indicator said 2nd. Probably needs some lube somewhere. It's only been from the trailer to the garage so far. I have not ridden it.
My wife's comment on the bike was, "Why did you buy such an old bike?" I should have told her it was a 2009. She would never have known the difference! Ha!

I would love to have a bike like that, but I would be afraid to ride it. That one is just too nice for the age. It must have never been stored out in the weather.

I feel the same way actually. I'm so afraid I will drop it! I probably should have bought a beater for half the money!

From the factory, the 'mascot' (that's what Yamaha calls it
) on the front fender tip is attached via double-faced foam tape, such as 3M automotive trim tape. Go to your local body shop and scarf a few inches. Make sure you clean any old tape from the mascot and then clean the mascot and fender with rubbing alcohol before placing it on the fender.
Thanks for the information. Not sure if I will put it back on.

That's a very nice Bike!!!!!!Way to go.
It's hard to believe but it actually looks better in person than the photos show.

I haven't checked the tire manufacture dates yet but the guy I bought it from rode it and it runs good. He said he had owned it for 4 yrs. The front tire is a Dunlop Elite III. I haven't looked at the rear yet. The air compressor works well. The ignition switch needed a little WD40 to work smoothly. The only thing I have found that doesn't work so far is the neutral switch. The kick stand has to be up to start it and the neutral light doesn't light up. Oh, and the Venture V that is supposed to be on the front fender is in the trunk. It appears to have been glued on. Is that correct? The fender does not have any holes in it and the paint is perfect. It will be next week before I can get it registered due to the notary filling out the title incorrectly. So, I have to make a 5 hr round trip to the Raleigh area again next week to re-sign the title.
I need an owners manual and a shop manual for it. I saw the Shop manual CDs or DVDs on ebay for cheap. Does anyone know if they are comprehensive?

I'm going to have to become a paying member now. I just bought a 1989 Venture that looks like a new bike. It has 5,914 miles on it. I'll post photos tomorrow because I just got home with it. It's maroon and black. I'm excited!

On another note,, we have been having a BALL "National Parking", buy a yearly pass every year.. Puc
When you get to 62 years of age, you can get a life time National Park pass. I got one for $10 a few years ago. If that is the pass you are talking about?

Cowpuc,
What brand is the bike jack and the tire bead breaker and where did you buy them?
Thanks,

Yuh got me there. I have never ridden a trike but I'm glad I said something that led to this thread. It is most interesting.
-
I think the bottom line is that ridden conservatively, you are much safer on a trike. If you want to ride fast through the curves, then a two wheeler is the way to ride.
-
Some of the filters have a high dp. Blow through it before putting it on to make sure it flows well. I put a small filter on my Kawa that works well. I bought a larger filter at AZ later to replace it with but it was much harder to blow through, so I back flushed the first one and re-installed it. With a gravity drain fuel supply, it doesn't take much dp to run out of fuel in the high rpm ranges.
-
-
why would it be safer
It will corner much faster before turning over.
-
A trike with two front wheels makes more sense than two rear ones. Will be much safer.

I bought a 2004 Kawasaki Concours a few yrs ago when my riding skills were really rusty. I dropped it turning into the driveway one day and I let it go. Second time I was pulling into a parking space in the Everglades national Park and dropped it. I was determined to keep it up but only succeeded in pinning my foot under the bike and it broke my second metatarsal. Only one other car was there so there was a person to help get the bike off me. No way I could get it off my foot by myself. Then a couple of weeks sitting at my desk at work combined with my age and I had blood clots in my lower leg. Took blood thinners for 4 months. So let it go when it has to. Trying to save it just causes more grief.
1st Gen Oil filter

I searched the web sites of Advance, Autozone, Napa, Motorcycle Superstore and Bike Bandit looking for an OE oil filter. Bike Bandit listed a K&N for $15.99. Motorcycle Superstore listed an Emgo for $5.99 and a Hiflo for $6.99.
After searching the forums, I think I found the correct numbers for Fram, the CH6002, and NAPA, the PS4933. So I called my local Napa and got them to order one for me for $6.99. This is for my newly acquired 89 VR. If these aren't the correct numbers, please correct me. Thanks
