  1. Have a safe trip Bob, I want to get down to see you!!
  2. :mytruck1:It was easier then you would think. I didn't relies there was a hole in the top of the collector in the right side exhaust side pipe. Looks like the chrome cover came loose and the PO tried to weld it back on with out removing the collector and burned a hole in the pipe. Anyway there must have been some oily crap on top of the collector. Bike has sat for 11 years with out being run. I thought I had gotten every thing out but I guess not. Anyway the engine was trying to start and she was doing some popping and next thing I new FIRE. Well we got it out. Could have roasted weines and marshmallows over it! but only toasted two wires from the bottom of the rear brake reservoir. So after the fire was out we cleaned everything out, ashes mostly. And tried to restart it and she started after a few tries. Revs where a bit high, 2500 RPM, but I got that adjusted down to just over 1000 RPM. She sounds really good, lots of smoke from the oil I put down the plug hole a couple days ago. It has a coolant leak and some oil dripping under neath just in front of the collector on the right side. But before I do a carb sync I'm dropping the exhaust and taking off the collector and repairing that! I get to play with my mig welder!!!!!!
  3. OK I'm going to remove the exhaust from my 86 VR and is there anything I need to know or beware of before I do this? I'm not taking off the headers I just want to get the collector box off for a repair. Looks like PO burned a hole through the pipe trying to re-weld the tab from the chrome side cover back on.
  4. You could solder in a jumper wire across the bad spot.
  5. OK Black wing thanks for the reply. I'm going to have a look tomorrow for it. I was quite surprised at how well the bike ran since this is the first time it has been started in nearly 11 years! I have a small coolant leak on the pipe that runs from the thermostat to the water pump. Disappointed with that as I had replaced the "O" ring on it. Also a small oil leak underneath on the right side, if you are on the seat, just in front of the collector. Can't see where it is but I'm dropping the exhaust tomorrow to patch a hole in the collector. Exhaust pipe coming out of collector has a hole in it. Looks like someone tried welding the tab on chrome cover on the side of the collector and burned a hole through the pipe. So now that I know it runs I can get down to doing the needed repairs!
  6. OUCH!!!!! I hurt just looking at it! Glad to hear you only have a few scrapes.
  7. Where is the flasher I know its behind the head light BUT which one is it????
  8. Now lets see the Harley is new and needs repairs. The Ventures are OLD and only need maintenance do the math.
  9. I was too busy dosing the flames to take picture sorry!!! Only burnt the wires coming off the bottom of the rear brake reservoir! But she runs really well!! Now I have to drop the exhaust and patch a hole in the right side exhaust pipe coming out of the collector.
  10. OK got the bike running but the turn indicator lights do not work. Now there are a couple wires that come out of the bottom of the reservoir for the rear brake and left front brake. They are a little crispy from the fire. Would that mess up the turn indicator? Everything else electrical looks good. So where do I start and where is the flash for the turn signals? I looked for it under the dash so its not marked the warning unit seems to be the only one that is. So which one is the flasher?
  11. OK once I got the fire out, the bike stated up and ran fine!
  12. OK Thanks got her going!
  13. Do you do a bench sync on the Gen 1 carbs like we do with the carbs on the Yamaha XJ's and Seca's? On them we have to set for a gap on the butterflies the thickness of a strip of business card in the closed position. Do we have to do anything like that with these carbs?
  14. The first ones at 600 miles then every 100 miles after that isn't it?
  15. The two pounder worked great!!!!! I would have used the 5 pound sledge hammer but I couldn't get the wife to hold the piece of hard wood for me:confused24:. She said she didn't like the way my eyes lite up when I suggested it!!!
  16. One word for this KROIL!!!! Use Kroil on it! Spray and let sit overnight OR give the wrench a few light taps with a HAMMER!!!!!
  17. Some more fun things to do: Go picking blueberries with the wife! And try not to hit the ground every time the air cannon goes off to scare the birds!! Go to WaMart, for those with full beards, and tell the bratty kids they are not getting anything for Christmas! Trim beard back so you can get back INTO wall mart after doing the above.
  18. No I didn't take it off it was off when I got it. Black wing I tapped the gasket into the muffler. Then I tapped the muffler with a PLASTIC headed hammer. Then when I got to the last 3/4 to 1/2 inch I used a TWO pound hammer and piece of hard wood to go the rest of the way. Its nice and tight NOW!!!! Thanks for the info guys.
  19. How do you get the muffler exhaust gasket on???? Its to small to fit over the pipe from the collector and to BIG to fit into the exhaust pipe end!!!!!
  20. I thought the trailer was to pick up all the parts that fell off on his way to the IR while he was on his homeward trip!
  21. I consider the scented pledge a security device! At least that's what I told the insurance agent.
  22. NO its NOT!!!!!!! Its an Ebike!!!!
  23. When does the contest end?
  24. Well the PO, one who passed away, seems to have covered his bases on this 86 VR that I am rebuilding. First of all he installed a upgraded clutch. And he also installed grease nipples on the swing arm in all the spots listed on this forum. Which I have duly greased. So that's a couple jobs I don't have to worry about!
  25. OK I'm doing the following because I'm here not there: 1 thru 5 cant do 6!!!! Dog, aka killer, will bite me!!! 7 thru 17 PLUS working on bike that WILL be going next year!
