I'll poke around the old coupling and see if there are any holes. The new final should be here by this weekend, so as soon as I get that beast out of my garage, I'll have some room to do an autopsy.. lol

IIRC, and I am pretty fuzzy on this one, If one were to put a MKI (or MKII for that matter) 1st gen rear end in there it would require some machining to make a place for the speed sensor to be installed. It can be done but is a lot more work than just a simple swap.

Yeah, but I'll bet a MKI coupler would fit into a 2nd gen final drive though.

The drive shafts I've pulled on 2nd Gens had no oil on the splines just a little grease from Yamaha. This is why service should be performed every so often like every third tire change.

i did learn the hard way about the oil holes on the coupler .i greased both ends of the drive shaft when putting it back and the grease blocked the oil holes mine looked similar the pick above after a 7500k trip to alice springs with sidecar and pulling a trailer i now have a vmax diff in the bike.
