To replace the fuel filter in my 07 RSV it took me over 45 minutes - 1/2 the time was trying to get a stupid backing nut on the white plastic tie down that is the whole reason the fuel filter takes so long in the first place. I have patience since I know I am NOT a wrench but come on. What lunatic hids a replaceable part so deep? And then to top it off my 92 year old Mother calls me with a computer question just at the moment of thread catch on that backing nut! Gotta help Mom and nicely and calmly too -then back to trying for another 10 minutes to get that backing nut on. Do you really have to take off all these pieces or did I do it wrong?

1. Seats - found I had lost both bolts holding the pillion - glad I did this little chore.

2. Side cover

3. fuel pump

4. other side cover

5. inner cover

6. battery - to get at the stupid backing nut they could have welded on.

7. the little vertical thing that is held in place by a white plastic tie that has a backing nut - that keeps the fuel filter from sliding out easily for replacement.

Just to replace the fuel filter?

Did I miss anything? Is there a simpler procedure?

Not VentureFar... right now, more like down ForMaintenance... waiting on points set for the Fuel pump.

THANK YOU VentureRider.ORG forum for teaching me all this good stuff!

Buy an automotive filter for under $5, reroute some fuel lines and mount the new filter under the seat just above the battery and behind the tank. Next filter change only take a couple of minutes.

When I had to go to Gravity Feed due to a failing fuel pump a few years ago, I added a $4 filter found on Wal-Mart shelf. I had to run GF for a week till part came in so added the filter. It was just a small inline tear drop shape thing. Worked fine.

No reason that couldn't be hid under the tank or seat and go straight to the pump, permanent .

(I keep it in my side bag, in a baggie, attached to a cheater fuel line in case a pump fails again. )

And to answer your original question - No, there is nothing you are doing wrong. It is one area of stupid design on these bikes. Fortunately, this is one of the very few.

I just changed mine last week. It is a PITA.

It is a very well protected area, probably determined by the corporate lawyers.

Easy to get to fuel filter and pump also means vulnerability in a crash. Ripped fuel lines and metal scratching on pavement equals BOOM!

But otherwise...yeah...its a PITA to get to that filter.

Sun is shining, I don't have to do that again for a few years, I feel better today.

Not sure i would want to put the fuel filter over the battery though.

I' ll leave it there till next time.

Actually, changing the filter is really quite simple. Many people do simply re-locate the filter, but I do not see any need for that - just use a similar sized $4 generic replacement. I have done a write-up in the past - you can probably find it with a search. The short of it is that you can just use your finger to push the filter up and out of the rubber sleeve without having to remove anything but a side cover. Been a while since I have done it, so maybe there is another minor step or two....

That sounds plausible in principal but when I had the old filter in my hand I needed a slim screwdriver to help me get the rubber sleeve off. I guess if i sprayed wd40 on the sleeve I might have slipped off easily?
