'89 VR Brake Res. Chrome Cover Bolt

Recommended Posts

OK, I have the chrome covers that go over my brake and clutch reservoir. My brake cover bolt is missing. It turns out to be a left hand thread and I think about 7mm. So I need one and I don't care if it is chromed or not, but shop guy is having a hard time finding one. Anyone have a good place to go check? thanks

thanks and when I get the bike back, (OH PLEASE BY FRIDAY) I will do that. I owe a picture of my upper brake light to another person. My bike guy is an ex Yamaha specialist for the VRs who now works at a Kawasaki shop so I don't get top speed. But all the Yamaha shop repairmen here in Houston all take their old bikes to him because he is so good on them. The won't work on my VR and all send me to this one guy. He does great work though. So I will show the cover. He told me my bike is covered with Unobtainium parts so I have to be careful not to lose most or damage them.

That hole the cover uses was intended for a mirror. Yamaha uses left hand threads on right mirrors so if you bang it it unscrews (hopefully) rather than breaking. On 1st gen Ventures it's not used.

I'd be tempted to either re-tap or helicoil for whatever chrome bolt I could get my hands on.

I agree with Carl. I have those chrome covers as well. AND I wanted helmet holders in those holes. I could not find a left hand thread version so I just retapped the hole to a right hand thread. Now I have the helmet holders AND the chrome covers. Have not dropped a helmet on the ground since. Been about 4 years and all is good. I believe the thread on the helmet holders was/is 10mm

I like your idea for helmet holders. Could you attach a picture of how you did that.

I did the same thing. There is no real tension that has to be maintained so if the threads are a little shallow it doesn't matter.I hold both clutch and brake covers down with the helmet holders.I also used blue lock tight so the brake side wouldn't come loose.

thanks guys and you are absolutely right, there is not any real force needed to hold the covers on. I have a paper towel under it right now so it fits snug and works fine. I also like the helmet holder idea and would like to see that too. Still waiting for my all important call to come and get her.

I should have several from my wrecked 91 VR. I'll look for one this evening. If you could take a picture of it on the VR would help me to be exact before shipping it out to you.

So I found the brake reseviour unit but the bolt is not there. So I looked on my 89VR and it does not have a bolt but rather a black plastic plug. I looked for the plug but did not find it.

Sorry. I tried.

I think I found the bolt you are looking for. I knew I had one, but just came across it today. The 83/84 I parted out last fall had the master covers on them & I remembered this bolt, sort of an odd one.

It has the left threads you need. Not stunning, but functional.

Let me know if you still need it. As they say on Ebay, it's RARE.

  • 2 weeks later...

Darn, I just saw this answer back to me on the bolt. I do not know the length but will take my right one out tomorrow and check. If you still have it let me know what you want. I am also trying to figure out how to attach a drink holder and I see Kuryakyn has one that mounts under these bolts. But I will check mine out and let you know. Top looks right. Thanks

I drilled mine and pushed in some brass inserts to use SAE bolts. I can find SAE chrome all over the place. Metric chrome is rare as hens teeth and 12X the price.

Dingy, got the bolt in the mail today...THANK YOU!!! Fits great of course. I think now I know why I was missing the bolt too. I could not put the bolt in with the cover on. Had to take a drill and wobble out the hole in the cover mounting tab. Now it fits and sure looks better setting down like it should. Much appreciated for the effort.
