Sturgis 2012

I was just writing to DirtSquirt about his bike and asked him if and when he was going to be in Sturgis this coming year of 2012. I mentioned starting a new thread where we could post our dates to be in Sturgis so we can get together while we're there. I'd really like to meet some more of the VentureRider Brothers in person. Phoneman1981 & I met quite a few of the members in Cody last summer @ the International Rally. We are planning on being in Sturgis both weekends this coming summer. Let's get together next summer & have a Mini Rally in Sturgis. Any Ideas??????

I would sure be open to trying to meet up. I've almost met up with Tx2Sturgis, and Phoneman1981 last year. It does get hard to do in all those people, especially when everybody has their own groups that they ride out with. I dont know when I'm going out, but I am from SD and probly have a little more flexibility than you guys do. I met up last year with some friends who were staying in Spearfish. They were going for a ride around the area with a group from their campground. We met at a gas station in Belle Fourche, and gassed up. That worked real well, not 300,000 people around. We then rode to Alzada Montana, down through Hulett Wyoming and back into SD. Both of those towns have their own " Special Days" and get rowdy. But we didnt go then. And the ride was awesome, not alot of bikes in those areas. Maybe we were lucky, but it is kind of the northern hills, transition into the plains. More wide open etc....Maybe something like that is an option. But if we do something like that, I am not good with remembering where I've been, and I get messed up with directions. So I wouldnt make a good "Fearless Leader" on a deal like that. But I would definately be game for trying to meet one way or another.....

This is a great start. We can exchange phone #'s & when it gets closer to the Rally we can start figuring out where & when to meet. Maybe a daily meeting place & time. That's how it was arranged in Cody at the International Rally last summer. Seemed to work real well.

Hello everyone: We have been trying to catch up with Brian and BJ for the past two Sturgis events. Not an easy task with events and crowds. I learn more every year. This year we discovered the FFA breakfast at the Sturgis Highschool was a great place to meet. No large crowds. Great food. Lighter traffic in the morning. It would be a great place to meet up. Just my thoughts. Anytime we can meet others VR members is great.

This is a great idea...the whole thread, but especially meeting at the highschool. In the morning they have an $8 all-inclusive breakfast and its not really crowded. I asked the school administration assistant Pam, about the school mascot name, the 'Scoopers', and she was really friendly and helpful.

I'm betting that if asked they could set aside a table (or two) for us. There is PLENTY of parking out front in the morning. Its worth a try anyway. If we pick a day or 2 in midweek, (say Tuesday AM and Thursday AM) that gets us some flexibility for other events that might conflict. But I also think an evening meeting should be doable, even WITH all the distractions and conflicts. As BJ said, its controlled confusion in a hoard of bikers, things happen, everyone looks the same, and half-dressed women with cigars and drinks and cleavage constantly distract a man. (or so I've heard!)

I would want a place that is easy to find, easy to gather in one non-crowded area, and then easy to get a beer or burger and sit and enjoy the nitelife. One place we found that might meet those criteria is the new Easyriders Saloon on the corner of Junction and Lazelle. On the third floor there is a huge balcony, and we could all meet at say, 7 pm on Monday and then again on Friday, watch the crowds from 40 feet up, and then go inside to a big table and have a beer or burger or steak. Just a thought. These 4 meeting times would provide a way that anyone attending the rally should be able to make one or two of them. Of course if friendships are forged then people could form up and plan rides or whatever.

One might hope that Freebird and/or a few other moderators could attend...this would add a HUGE amount of interest I think.

Thoughts anyone?

Great ideas guys. I think by August we can have a simple & easy plan to get together any of the days a person is there. We might even plan breakfast every day @ 8 - 9 @ the high school. That way if you come to breakfast you could meet VR's you don't even know. Maybe we could get a designated table or 2. tx2sturgis do you remember the organizer @ the high school? If you do would you make contact with her to see if we can get a couple designated tables we could post here?

I went to the breakfast at the school last year. A guy could meet out front at the entrance as well. If I remember right there was some benches or landscaping in front. You could meet there, and then everybody get in line together and go through. Once inside you could grab a table close to where the line filters around the gym. Then just watch for guys in Yamaha/venture shirts in case some are running late.....Might work that way as well.

I can probably do that but I'd want to wait until at least the springtime...I mean, with 9 months till the rally, she might forget! Of course, I might forget also...

I'll set a reminder in my iphone to remind me in late april...hows that?

UPDATE:

Well on second thought I sent off an email to her email address. Just in case she says no way, we can scratch that and adjust our plans accordingly. But I bet she will say its ok.

I will post the reply if and when I get one.

Wow you guys are serious, and they told me not to bring the fire bike to a Harley rally, looks like you guys could be my back up! This could be fun!:thumbsup2:

Harley rally?

This may come as a shock, but the SD cops dont turn you away if your bike is not a Harley.

The rally is so big that no one has time to monitor what anyone else is riding. And even if the rally was say, 75% HD, ( which is quite generous) that still leaves probably 100,000 bikes of other brands at a rally that on a LOW year has an attendance of around 400,000.

Sturgis is a MOTOCYCLE rally, not a Harley rally. Now to be honest, you will find a LOT more Harley signs and shirts and jackets and bandanas and boots than you will any other brand, but that just makes it all the more interesting to find others who fly different brands of jackets and shirts.

Its quite an event.

Dont let something like that worry you. The town wants your money...no matter WHAT you ride!

I will be out there with a little group this coming year. Went out in 2009 with about 8 other bikes and it was a blast. I have our hotels planned and days of riding (routes and gas stops). I have planned and saved money now for about a year so I might be able to make it. We will be riding into Wall SD on Monday Aug 6 afternoon/evening and staying there for the rally. Not too crowded and damn good price on a room with a owner that is really nice and biker friendly. I have rides planned for all the major areas (bad lands, mt. R, nemo, Custer, spearfish, devils tower, Hulett WY, Alzada Montana, enchanted hwy ND, needles, and all the above). We will be heading out on Sunday Aug 12 and heading south to east back to North Carolina. Got some good plans there also for Pikes Peak, four corners, rt 66, and more. I would be up for meeting but there will be others with me LOL. I look forward to reading about the meet & greet VR style. Let’s keep this thread open.

I'd recommend the ride to the top of Mt Evans, west of Denver. Highest paved road in North America. Well worth it, and not crowded at all. IF you suffer from fear of heights, or vertigo, or altitude sickness, stay on the flats and watch the video instead.

Helluva Ride. :happy34:

We did Pikes Peak this summer. 14,110 feet. Plenty high enough for me!!! NO GUARD RAILS!!!! I had no idea there were none! The only spot not paved, about a mile and a half long and not real close to the edge. Very cool ride, but a little white knuckled for me. But....I would do it again.

Went out and visited my brother in Denver a few years ago. He took us up Mnt. Evans. Its a good thing he drove the van. I dont like heights......I was ok when I got up there on top. The view is amazing ( look over at Pikes Peak etc.). On the way up, and the way down, I watched the movie "Grease" on my daughters portable dvd player because I couldnt take it.....

We would enjoy meeting you & your friends. Sounds like you've got a great group of rides planned. Let's all stay tuned here on this thread & maybe one of the moderators will help us with a place we can post our dates to be in Sturgis & our phone numbers. It will be great to meet some more of the family. We might even try to arrange a small VR Sturgis Rally.

I got a reply today from Pam Gies, the Administrative Assistant, and her message follows:

Are you looking for a table in the cafeteria? Or in the commons area? For all day, just breakfast? I don’t think it would be a problem at all; I just need a few more details.

Let me know and we can most likely set something up.

Brian, Thanks for making contact with the Sturgis HS person. That's great! I think we should wait to ask for something specific from her until we know more about how many people are interested. maybe we could consider a table or 2 on the North side of the cafeteria 7 put a little sign up for all the VR members to see. Just thinking out loud?? Any ideas?
