I need a new hosting service for my family Website since AT&T dropped it's service in August. I have looked at a few but I am not thrilled by any so far. Can anyone recommend one that is reliable and inexpensive? I just need enough for family tree's, photos and if I want to make a special page for something.

I've been using these guys for about 8 years to host 3 websites costing a total of $5.95/mo including one domain name with $10/yr for more. The promo price has been going on for years. I have found them to be economical and reliable with quick response to customer service inquiries or issues.

Might be more features than you are after but there are no ads or other Whoo-Haw like you get with the "free" sites.

I have my business with Arvixe.

It's $4/month (2 year prepay commitment required -$96). It includes registration of one domain, unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email accounts and unlimited subdomains. You can add up to four additional domains for the registration fee ($7 or so per year I think).

I also have our STAR Touring chapter on the same account. So it runs about $55/year for hosting both domains, their subdomains and email accounts.

They have a whole suit of applications available to handle forums, photo albums, blogs, shopping carts etc. There also is a site builder toolkit, which I find a bit lacking. I host the two web sites, an online store/shopping cart, a photo album and a forum.

I've been extremely happy with them. I moved from Go Daddy and find the Arvixe hosting a much better value.

I just got the following from Arvixe today. If you're still looking for web hosting this could save you some bucks:

Dear Carl Galloway,

First, I'd like to thank you for your continued support of our services and products. Our phenomenal growth throughout the past 2 years in the shared hosting arena could not have been possible without your loyalty.

As a thank you, we've decided to offer all new hosting accounts at 50% off only for today and tomorrow just in time for Black Friday. On any new shared hosting account, using any payment term (yes even when paying monthly), you'll get a full 50% off when using the coupon code “black friday” during checkout for the LIFE of that account.

At Arvixe, we believe that we are truly offering a superior web hosting experience. Therefore, such discounts are not common. We do hope that you take full advantage of it.

If all you want to host is a family website you should probably do that with blogger.com

Its part of the 'google' world and if you have a gmail account then you already have an account with them.

Its free, easy to set up, and you can load in all the pics, or let others have access and they can upload directly when they want to.

If you REALLY need to rent server space and buy a domain for a family website, you must have a REALLY big family. But having said that, I use 1and1.com for a couple of my websites.

Once you have an acct on 1and1 or any hosting and domain service, you can buy a domain for about $5 to $10 a year. Then you can set that domain to point to ANY other website or blog anywhere on the net. So if you already have say a facebook, or blogspot page, with all the family pics, then you can set the domain DNS to redirect to that page.

Example:

You sign up for a domain and you call it: http://www.smithfamilycottageintennesee.com

Then you set the domain to redirect to: http://www.smithfamilyblogg2010.blogger.com

(these are fake adresses, they dont actually work, they are just for example)

Whenever you give out the address for you family, you tell them go to smithfamilycottageintennesee.com

They type that in, then the domain redirects to the blogspot that you set up for free.

This way you can have the domain you want, but not have to pay for server and hosting rental, which is a monthly cost...and if anything happens and you cant or wont keep paying for the original domain (at $5 a YEAR), you dont lose the CONTENT at blogger.com. In fact, you can buy several domains and have them all point to one website.

This is the way I've done it and its not hard to do. You just have to figure out what domain names you want, and then check for availability. You can do this on any hosting site.
