painterman67 Posted September 8, 2010 #1 Posted September 8, 2010 went for a ride to the dragon this weekend. Every thing felt good there and back till my last stop. When I went to downshift on the exit ramp the shifter pedal went from normal to pointing straight down to the ground. I talked top muffinmman and he said to check the bolt that held the shifter to the transmision spline( think thats what it is called). the one that comes out of the side of the tranny. The bolt was loose but not broke so I tightened it up. Hers where it gets weird. Before I tightened the bolt I could shift up or down by hand . Now it is stuck in 5th gear. will not shift. I did pull the cog off of the splined gear to check , I think i got it bac in the same place not sure. help please as its too soo to end my year and I cant afford to put her in the shop just yet. Any ideas will be appreciated. My # is 336 707 5561 if anyone has any ideas that they arent sure they can explain over the internet or if you kneed more explanations of what Ive done. Im not a mechanic so I stopped where i was as Im not sure if it not changing is me putting it in a bind or if it want change because it cold as its always a little hard to get it to change before you warm it up. Again any help will be appreciated. David.
bkuhr Posted September 9, 2010 #2 Posted September 9, 2010 When I put mine back together I made the mistake of getting it backwards. Forget excatly how, and as I am traveling for work I don't have my scoot to take a pic. I think the push rod from the pedal needed up, or down, I don't remember. Any way, I found kicking down would shift up-to 5 and stop. (sounds like yours), kicking up shifted down. was easy fix, just take pedal back off and reverse.
Marcarl Posted September 9, 2010 #3 Posted September 9, 2010 Going from the shifter pedal there is a link that goes to the shaft which goes into the engine. On this shaft there is a leg which is attached to the shaft from the pedal. It should be pointing down and slightly to the rear, maybe you've got that wrong.
bongobobny Posted September 9, 2010 #4 Posted September 9, 2010 OK if you have the rod going horizontal, it is wrong! It should be pointing down at about a 60 degree angle. The rod should be positioned so that it is perpendicular with a line drawn to the center of the shaft. Even being off by one tooth can make for rough shifting either up or down...
painterman67 Posted September 9, 2010 Author #5 Posted September 9, 2010 not shifting at all in any position Ive tried today. Now for the worst part, I do believe Ive got a clutch problem . It is eaither the problem with the shifter or or a seperate problem to boot. Had to try to move the bike today as I needed the trailer out of the back yard. The bike is stuck in 5th gear and i was hoping to be able to limp it out of the way , so I let out the clutch slowly to see if I could get the old girl to move . I only needed about a foot . I eventually eneded up l;etting the clutch all the way out and the motor never bogged or stopped. Full release and no movement or shut down of the motor.Ended up getting the neighbor to help me push her out of the way. David
bkuhr Posted September 9, 2010 #6 Posted September 9, 2010 Now I'm thinking maybe clutch basket bushing broke and basket jammed shifter cam at the same time disenagaing clutch drive gear. Suggest pull clutch cover & inspect. Others may have other ideas
