6pak Posted December 19, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 19, 2008 Has anyone on here ever had a set of wheels powdercoated? if so are there any problems that I need to be aware of? Wheel weights and such? Don't know if I will have this done, any ideas about the price?
pegscraper Posted December 19, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 19, 2008 It's just like paint. There shouldn't be any issues at all. I have no idea what it might cost.
BoomerCPO Posted December 19, 2008 Share #3 Posted December 19, 2008 A guy in our MC Club just had a set done for his son's bike. Heavy $$$ he said. The wheels were both spoked so maybe that's what drove up the price. Oh yeah they were done in two-tone paint as well.
Jerry W Posted December 19, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 19, 2008 I will do some checking, I am going to lower my bike and shorten the kickstand then have the kickstand powder coated black so the weld is not noticable. I will ask about wheels when I talk to the powdercoat guy.
Mariner Fan Posted December 19, 2008 Share #5 Posted December 19, 2008 I had a bicycle frame powdercoated. It actually was much cheaper than having it painted. The powercoating is much tougher than regular paint as well. From what I can remember, the only downside is that the colors are limited.
Rottdoglover Posted December 19, 2008 Share #6 Posted December 19, 2008 Last year I had a pair of 7 spoke wheels powdered. $120 for both. Single color. Strip EVERYTHING off. Bearings, seals, weights, valve stems, etc. If you can get them blasted first, it brings cost down a little. Today there are virtually endless colors and combinations available. Even candies and pearls and textures. Powder is a LOT better than just paint. Do it and you won't be sorry.

They had to go through the entire procedure twice.
