Hi gang! Long time lurker, first time poster, thanks for having me on the show. Anyhow, I've got an 83 Venture that I'm trying to rehab, and have two problems. First is that the bike didn't come with a rear master. Have seen a couple on Ebay....you know...they're all almost 30 years old...not a fan. Anyone find a suitable replacement? I don't mind cobbling, but I thought I'd ask before I bought something I THOUGHT would be close. Thoughts?

Second is the speedo. On the way home from picking the bike up, the speedo exploded. Other than used, does anyone know of a replacement that'll bolt in from another bike? VMax, Radian? Thoughts?

I personally see nothing wrong with a 30 year old master cylinder, there are rebuild kits out there and they make hones small enough to re-hone the cylinder. They are metal, not plastic, and do not deteriorate!

Define "Exploded!" Do you mean the needle fell off, there are a million pieces where once a gauge was?? If you mean it made a squealing noise, the needle bounced around for a short while then it stopped working? If so your speedometer cable probably broke...

I know the V-Max rear brake master does not link to the front and is still currently available new - thinking like 150 bucks.. Not sure on what you would need to do to make it fly but, by the sounds of your detailed question - welding on a couple tabs and routing a couple hoses if you need to does not sound like it would be a problem..

You could also order up the V-Max front brake system and end up with dual front brakes and a rear brake..

As far as speedo - I know lots of folks are just using their GPS system as a speedo.. My nephew just bought an Escort radar detector for his 30k dollar Beemer Dual Sport bike and, if I recall, even the radar detector will tell you your speed..

As far as new OEM replacements I highly doubt you will find anything and, not sure, but I highly doubt a plug n play new OEM is available - MAY BE WRONG THOUGH - lets wait and see what the guru's say!!

Been riding these 83's for years and LOVE them!! Just started on my 6th one.. I have numerous parts and pieces laying around and that I would be willing to part with BUT - they are not brand new - decent usable stuff but CERTAINLY NOT NEW!!

CONGRATS ON THE SCOOT AND :welcome1::2ORANGE::group cheers: Buyer!! Enjoy your stay and hope you get that 83 up and going!!!!

Member Skydoc sells an upgrade for the master cylinder. It's from another bike but will work on the Venture. Oops! I was mixed up. He sells an upgraded caliper. But, he might be able to help you with the master.

Thx for the reply. I am already working on a dual front setup. I've acquired R6 calipers and master cylinder, just have sort the lines. I'll look into a VMax rear master. I definitely want something that isn't linked; doing away with that. As far as the speedo, it's definitely not the cable. I took the binnacle apart and bits of the speedo itself fell out. I think I'm going to have to get a new-to-me used unit.
