I attempted to fix the starter problem the "less expensive" (stock) way. So I ordered the parts from the list in the original post. I THEN tore the bike apart. I found the clutch was cracked. Now I need to order a clutch assembly which comes with the dowels, and springs, and caps already installed. The modified fix now seems to "less expensive".
moral of the story? two fold: less expensive fix is not always immediately obvious, and tear it apart before you order parts/diagnose the problem.
I am very appreciative of all the knowledge and advise offered up here and look forward to spending more time on this site now that I am a full fledged member
