  1. [ame=http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NK-CQ9gFm7I#]Idle speed check - YouTube[/ame] Does the above video seem like the right idle speed? Dont have a tach handy and just trying to get in ballpark til I grab one.
  2. Maybe he simply tightened the axle bolt to spec? Which... in a way would kind of adjust pressure on the bearings.
  3. FWIW. I recently did my valves for first time at about 105,000. All the intake valves were within in spec and a few exhaust valves were out by 0.02 or less. Not sure I would say valve adjust is really necessary at 30k... but YMMV
  4. Sorry to hear that. Hoping for a full recovery.
  5. I run Seafoam through once or twice a year and last time was recent. I seriously doubt a carb issue as the bike runs perfect. I suspect that exhaust leak at the rear gasket was the culprit. I do not think the leak at Y pipe was causing the backfire. If you look at my video... that leak is blowing air OUT the pipes. Whereas the leak at the engine gasket was clearly sucking air in. Should know here in a bit when I get it all back together.
  6. Yes, I just found that. What moron designed this junk? I took the whole section out and was able to carefully sand blast the joint and cover it with JB Weld. Should fix it. The gaskets actually look fine but was I able to tighten the ring a little so hoping that fixes that part. Hopefully fixing these leaks and boosting the idle RPMs a little will make an improvement.
  7. So now the question is... how the heck do you remove the chrome heat shield in order to repair that Y pipe leak??
  8. Opps. Fixed. (I think)
  9. Well, using a simple grill lighter... I found some exhaust leaks. One on the right side Y pipe and both rear gaskets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yli8szboIXA
  10. So, does someone who knows their RSV has the idle set to 1000rpm have a sound clip? After reading that idle speed could be my problem, I started mine and to be honest... it does seem kinda slow. But I have nothing to compare to. I did bump it up and will test it tomorrow.
  11. I don't have a tach. I kinda guessed where it should be. Would that cause this? Maybe that would explain why adding even a little throttle makes the popping stop
  12. Whats the best way to check for exhaust leak? I have removed most of the AIS stuff and plugged the hoses years ago. Is that the same thing as the blocking smog thermactor valves you mentioned?
  13. For some time my bike has had a mild decel pop and occasional backfire. This winter I did my valves which required I take off the carbs and reinstall them. Ever since, this condition has worsened. When I decel, my bike does a pop pop..pop..pop BANG. At Asheville Rally, I had several ducking for cover! The bike starts right up. The bike idles smoothly. Twist the throttle from a dead stop and it immediately takes off. No hesitation at all. Twist throttle at just about any speed and the bike responds without hesitation. So... as for as performance goes... all seems fine. I have noticed that this only happens when I am applying zero throttle. If I add even a little bit of throttle... it seems to stop the popping right away. What I have done so far: 1. Just resync'd carbs 2. Replaced the rubber caps that cover the sync ports. Mine were cracked some. 3. Sprayed some starter fluid around the carb boots while bike running to see if I could find a place that the RPM's changed in search of a vacuum leak. Found nothing. I'm running stock exhaust. K&N air filters and I opened the filter covers holes a bit. But I did that 10 years ago with no ill effects. This is all in the past year and half. So... any idears??
  14. It is good to hear positive dealer service stories now and again... Glad they got you fixed up!
  15. I think that is very true. Especially with the helmets. Some people who ride a lot in hotter climates can wear out a helmet in just a few years just from them getting nasty. But I don't buy into the crap that helmets can 'time out'. My wife rarely sweats and has a 10 year old helmet that looks like brand new inside and out. Great way to sell helmets IMHO.. It ranks right up there with the advertising trick that helped increase shampoo sales by adding one simple word to the instructions. Repeat. I do think it is prudent to inspect under the liner for any styrofoam deterioration occasionally... but trashing a perfectly good helmet just because it hits some manufacture magical date makes no sense unless you own their stock. YMMV
  16. Opinions here will likely vary... but mine is.. inspect them closely. If you see no signs of sidewall cracking... I would use them. As I understand... the biggest enemy to rubber is UV rays. Being these were stored in the garage, I suspect they may be just fine. I'd use them.
  17. Wow glad you are OK. Glad the seat switch did the job. Get well soon!
  18. Randy has the purple 1st gen. And I am glad this wasn't resolved by a drag race.
  19. How about trying Venturous TN.... oh wait... that wouldn't work either would it.. Venturous Gary
  20. How many miles did you put on the tire you just replaced? Was any of thoses mile in twisty mountain roads? If so... how did it feel? It is the handling on windy mountain roads that has me most concerned with the CT change. Since I pull a heavy tent camper... the CT may be a good idea. Thanks.
  21. Good shots...
  22. Here is the link to the photos Lisa and I took during the 2014 Asheville Rally: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk21s1cD Below are some of my favorites.
  23. Lisa and I turned a 2 hour ride into 6+ but rolled in safe about 20 minutes ago. Thank you Randy & Linda for putting this on and Woody and Katrina for the camp hospitality suite. And thanks to the ladies who stayed back cooking us grub while we all went riding. Lisa and I had a great time. Pictures before 11...
  24. Lisa and I all packed up and headed home sadly. We decided weather too nice for interstate so riding BRP and Smokys home. Stopped to hike to and ventured to the top of Fryingpan Mtn firetower near Mt Pisque. If you ever have the chance... the views are awesome. No way a picture could convey.
