  1. and yes, all that fuel did lock up the cylinder. Pulled the plug and got a nice shower..
  2. I'm waiting on a friend with an '86 whose gonna give me the needle protrusion measurement Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  3. Thanks! And no, haven't disassembled the slides. Figured I would try to verify correct needle and proper protrusion length first. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  4. Interesting, the tapers on the long and short needles I have here look same.. Do I need to msg those folks or are they "tagged"here for a notification. They have always been helpful. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  5. I thought about the alignment pin then wondered how it could account for that much difference.. I see my 84 xvz12 has needle set 26H-1490J-00-00, same p/n as the '86 except the prefix. So I assume same p/n, same length... And I can pull one out of my carbs to check length then pull all the needles out that '86 and check the shim assembly .. Thanks all! Again! 6. The difference is about 6mm which sounds like more than, one washer. But ill get all four measured and see if I can set them the same and try it. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  7. Hey Rick, thanks.. I didn't remove the needles from the piston valves and so I didn't see a number on the needles nor get to measure total length. One of the needles protrudes from the piston 1.5 inches and the other needle is about 1 9/32 inches. But you are confirming whatnot saw which is 4 same needles shimmed the same. Attached find pics. Hopefully before I get back there I can get the proper length from the piston and get the right needles.. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  8. I'm working on this 86 xvz13 after somebody tried to clean the carbs but couldn't get them back in.. Well it leaked fuel overflow so then I got the clips on the floats. Still wouldn't rev so off with the carbs and cleaned the jet blocks and sprayed all passages. Still no won't rev and noticed the two right bank piston valves not fluttering as much as the left. Tried my ignetek ignition, still won't rev and then patched two tiny holes in diaphrams. Looking close at piston valves I see the main jet needle 1NL-1490J-00-00 NEEDLE SET, for rear is about 6mm longer than that of the front.. Are these needles different lengths or supposed to be shimmed that much different? Exhaust port temps were close.. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  9. I'm working on an '86 xvz13 and on the right bank carbs notice the rear needle is protruding from piston about 6mm more than the front.. Is this right? Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  10. It was a stuck float. But she still isn't running right. I tried my ignetak ignightion and still no good. I was about to test the ignition continuity through the pickups when I noticed the right bank carb piston valves were not fluttering as much as the left so decided to check those diaphrams.. Well one had a tiny pinhole which I remedied with some rtv but then notice one piston valve (the black slider tube mounted to diaphram) had a high spot ring around it and then comparing the two noticed the main jet needle was longer on the rear carb. What!! Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  11. I ment with the clutch switch disabled Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  12. yes, that's the way I do it, with carb set out on its side propped on a chair.. and yes, taking off the throttle linkage arm makes easier work and a screwdriver and needle nose. And yes, the pull cable goes under that little white plastic guide where it looks like it might go over.. but even with it all slacked, there isn't enough slack to place the cable ends into the pully things with the cables in the pully thing groove. I can get one or the other in easy enough but not both.. last time they came apart easy and hopefully that will repeat but they went in hard.. I think I'm missing something (like a bunch of brain cells)/
  13. I found a table of the jet size/locations along with a cross section of carb showing orifices in a rebuild procedure on the other site. looking closer and thinking, it makes no dam sense to me how fuel could flow up without flowing out of the overflow or the PAJ1 (if float was stuck). it must have something to do with weird vacuum or lack there of in the main jet needle area?? This must have happened to some other riders here... what's the cause?? I think I might have had some fuel spray out of there on my carbs when they were spitting before I rebuilt them and changed my ignition.. But I'm sure this was from the backfires out the carb..
  14. I know this sounds elementary but I've had trouble removing and re installing carb cables every time I yank a carb (working on two machines and one, unfortunately, too many times...). anyway, I know to thread in the adjusters and remove the pull cable slotted bushing/spacer and or pull the return cable out of it's holder... but no matter what, it's been a pain (sometimes hard, sometimes harder,...). Is there a definitive order of operations and method for removing and then reinstalling the carb cables?? (choke is easy).
  15. Hey, cruise control on my '84 has been very finicky. Just not wanting to set at a speed... Turn on and the dash light comes on but push to set and it doesn't lock on.. Is this likely the cruise switch itself or a canceling switch (like clutch switch!).. Sorry not to jack a thread.. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  16. In gear, the starter didn't move the bike at all? Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  17. And I found it on YouTube.. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  18. Sometimes the onset can be fast but my bike gets "swimy" at high speeds it comes on slow with increased speed.. So yes, just lay down! Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  19. Haha. Just watched the video (after my comment). All spot on except I don't think its so much total weight (weave inversely proportional to rider mass) but rather a combination of c.g. and total weight as displaced from the bike c.g. fat dudes have fat ass and core closer to the bike cg which offsets the bikes own weight away from c.g.. But there's also a trailer weave issue which has it that a longer and heavier bike puts more load on the front wheel caster point. Bigger front wheels or higher front and or lower ass increases the trail and I found this to exaggerate snake weave. Funny I just bought a 79 gs1000 and a 77 gs750 wanting something bigger than my xj550 and less snake weavy than my venture at speeds and here the video shows those old bikes weaving. Can you post a YouTube link to that video to share? Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  20. Lowering your c.g. might help more than pushing on the bars. I don't think this is the wobble that folks complain about but rather a high frequency shimmy of the handlebars on feel around 20-40 mph. Mostly with no hands it can be dampened by holding the grips. The video showed a snake weave that got out of control. My bike exhibits this behavior and exageratted with high speeds, heavy loads, top heavy loads, selection and pressure in tires and air in front forks. Road irregularities can set it off. I still need to check my swingarm and shock mounts better and need to do fork seals, but I think this is the nature of the bike. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  21. Anyone have a list of jet sizes and locations? Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  22. Thanks both.. I still think I have a misplaced jet.. I've cleaned and reassembled a few of these carbs now (& many others). The plugs in the jet block are tapered, stuffed in hard, and held in place by the carb body as the jet block is socked down. And I'm sure the overflow tube was clear and I watched it not flow out there. But good point, ill try opening that drain screw and flush it. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  23. I'm working on an '86 xvz13 for a friend and I got it after someone worked on the carbs but had trouble gettiing them back in. They looked clean so i installed and found all four bowls overflow - clips were not on the float tabs.. Next time it would fire on either and die right out (yes I verified I had fuel in the bowls from drain screw). Carbs off again for a total clean and found the jet blocks weren't touched. Used fine wire and soak and brush and spray all the parts and sprayed the jet block and carb orifices... It runs now but wouldn't rev until it got warm and touchy at that and sluggish AND I see fuel weeping steadily up though the main jet air bleed on carb 1. Oh and I should add that carb 3 has no fuel as observed from bowl drain check and I did totally remove the screw to make sure the tube orifice wasn't clogged. I will be able to get the carb 3 fuel flowing but any ideas on the fuel flowing out that main jet air bleed? I'm wondering if some jets were mixed and I just put them back in same place without verifying position. 24. Haha I said buffering. I meant buffeting. At speed I could feel the wind pushing on my back. I haven't noticed . lovers by my speakers. 1984 vr. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
  25. What kind of slip ons do you have for trade? I have a set of Harley road king muffs that look perfect. I think the rk muffs are the typical muffler upgrade for the rsv but I had hoped to use them on my '84 vr. Sent from my VS987 using Tapatalk
