  1. I took it to a shop. [emoji12] Seriously, I've heard they're hard to mount by hand. Cowpuc will probably chime in soon and he may have a trick or two. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  2. Ok, I'll look for that, thanks for the heads up! Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  3. Bongo, are you taking about dielectric grease? I thought about that but wasn't sure about the environment in there and if it was suitable for that stuff. It's actually not a hard job at all to get to that sensor. I may go back and put dielectric grease in there after my trip. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  4. The new (to me) sensor is in and, after a brief test ride in the rain, the dash shows all the gears. Now I just need to get a longer ride in, get it heated up and see if the neutral light flickers. I'm cautiously optimistic that it's fixed, but then again, that's my normal state [emoji23] Thanks for chiming in cowpuc! Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  5. You can't pull the pin out, but I pushed on it and it feels strong. I'm going to put the other sensor in and see if it performs better. The upper one in the pic is my original one, the lower one from the wrecker. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  6. First of all, thank you videoarizona for your responses to me about this topic. I truly appreciate you giving of your time. I posted this to try and assess if this is something I should tackle before my road trip down to Nashville. The reason I'm looking into all this is because when I stop for gas, I can't start my bike if it doesn't see neutral. People have told me I can start it with the clutch in but my bike doesn't let me. Perhaps there's an issue with the clutch switch? Now I understand that there's a spring that might be worn out, I understand what's going on. I'll just have to lean to the left to start up! [emoji23] It looks like a screw in the middle of that part with the pin. Do you know if I can take that out to get at that spring? Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  7. Yeah, I just don't know how things look behind there to understand why contact is intermittent, so I thought I'd ask. I'm off today and will head out to the garage shortly to start getting into it. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  8. I'm having issues with the neural light flickering when the engine is warm and the transmission is in neutral. I thought it was the sensor located behind the clutch slave, but yesterday I made an observation that made me want to consult with the experts here. When the bike leans to the left the light comes on solid. If I lean the bike to the right, the light flickers until I lean it far enough to the right then it goes out completely. Anyone have any idea why it would do this? I'm about replace the sensor with one off a lower mileage bike but I'd like to understand why the current one is acting like this. Thanks in advance for any insight provided. Suds Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  9. Thanks for that response Videoarizona, I appreciate it. Now I have to decide if I want to tackle this or live with it until the off season and tackle it then. How would you rate the job of getting to that switch? I put a bid in on one on ebay, it's off an 89 that I got my rear suspension from and I think it was fairly low milage judging from the condition of the parts I bought. Looking forward to hearing your opinion on that job. Suds Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  10. Stand is up, neutral light is off, clutch is in, it won't allow a start. I'm thinking it's gotta be clutch switch related for the starting. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  11. Hi everybody! I've been having an issue since last season with the bike not always seeing that I'm in neutral after long rides and therefore I'm having trouble starting the bike after a gas stop. Here's what I'm seeing: 1) the neutral flickers and sometimes when I jiggle the clutch lever it'll come on strong in which case I'm good. 2) the neutral light doesn't come on and no amount of fiddling seems to bring it back on so I'm left to sit for a bit and try it again after that and it usually comes back on and I can start the bike. I've also noticed that sometimes the dash doesn't display second gear, it's blank when I'm in second. There's probably more to it but that's what I've observed so far. I pulled the connection at the clutch lever, cleaned it and reconnected it thinking that might be the issue but alas, it came back again last night. I'm wondering if it might be the gear position sensor. Any help pointing me in the right direction is appreciated because other than that, my bike is running great. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Suds Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  12. I just did this about a month ago. I removed the mufflers, both bags and the caliper, leaving the racks in place. ( I replaced the rear suspension too so I needed the extra access) Like MiCarl said, why risk breaking something plastic (or otherwise) that might be near impossible to replace. Good luck! 13. gaj1917 Did you do yours with the carbs on? Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  14. Well, I found a salvaged shock from a wrecker in Montreal. Picked it up for $65 and got it to my door for a total out of pocket of $86. I wish I'd taken pics along the way but I just dove in and got to it. I ended up having my 12 year old daughter come out and help me so it turned into one of those memory moments and added to my experience. She had a blast turning wrenches with me. Here's a side by side of the two units. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong with the old one but the ride height wasn't adjusting. I also replaced the rear tire, I went with a Dunlop E4 since I'd had good luck with the E3's. I didn't realise how worn down my rear tire was after two long trips last year for a total of about 10,000km on those two trips. (I believe it was my fourth season on the tires for a total of 36,000km) The other pic is with all the plastic off and after reassembly. All in all it started out feeling a little daunting but the satisfaction of doing the jobs myself was worth it. With each job I get to know this great bike more and more. The next thing I want to tackle is checking the valve clearance but I have to read up more on that before I dive into that job! Cheers![emoji106] Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  15. A few pics I took for those finding this old thread about the CLASS. Getting it off the bike is pretty straightforward and here are a few close ups of the whole setup for those who are visual learners like me [emoji16]. I hope that helps anyone who stumbles on this thread. I forgot to take a pic of the pink desiccant prior to baking it at 275*F Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  16. I'm interested to see what the experts say on this one because I'm wondering the same about my 90 VR. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  17. Thanks! The original plan was to mount it there but even with it removed it's quite tall and I wanted to keep the accessory terminals off that plate. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  18. I updated the fuse block on my 90 Royale this week. It was taller than I hoped so this was the only location I could make it fit. I'm no professional but I'm happy with the results. I do have a question for all you gurus out there. To the left you can see a green wire (with some black shrink tubing on it) and I don't know where that's supposed to go. One of the previous owners had a mouse get in and chew some wires and this one was taped up and left loose so I don't know where it goes. Is it a ground wire? Any guidance is appreciated. Sent from my SM-G955W using Tapatalk
  19. My issue was cleared up with a fresh battery to replace my very old, tired one. I've not had issues since. The battery was due to be replaced, probably should have been done by the previous owner. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
  20. Mileage: 140650km and counting! (87395 miles) VIN: JYA1UMN08LA008107 Mft date: 12/89 This is one amazing bike backed by an even more amazing online community! Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
  21. I managed to get the throttle cables off the grip... trick seemed to be to remove the rear cable first. Took the entire unit apart, cleaned up everything, used some dielectric grease on reassembly and everything seems to be functioning properly. Yay! Thanks to everyone that offered assistance to me, I appreciate everything the members here do to help each other out, especially the less experienced people like myself. Ride on!
  22. Sorry, had to run kids around and such... Ok, voltages are all good. It seems the start switch is messed up. It's sticking or catching on something. I got the bike started and the headlight was behaving properly once I figured out how to jiggle the switch the right way. Now the question I have is: is there a trick to getting the assembly off so I can get at the start switch and find out what's going on inside. I'm starting my search but if anyone can point me in the right direction to help me cut down on the time it'll take me to figure out how to get this off, I'd be grateful for the help. 😊 Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
  23. Headlight is not on when: key is on, in neutral, stand is up, kill switch is in run position. Push the start button=nothing happens Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
  24. I've had it towed home now, at least I had CAA coverage. I'll start checking things now. Thanks for the reply bongo. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
