  1. I have been tracking my MPGs this last tank I came in at 23.16mpg. opinions???? I have a carb sync tool that is shipping to my house. I am going to pull the carbs and clean them, replace fuel filter, replace plugs. that is all I have purchased so far. what more do I need since I am in there. I think I have a cylinder not fireing or not getting fuel. I do not know how else to explain the horrible gas mileage.
  2. Seafoam in the gas tank does smoke equally out of both pipes. However from time to time the left side is worse at start up due to being leaned that way for too long. If the problem was worse the smoke would not have stopped, and it would do it every time i start. I'll keep an eye on though. Maybe a full engine rebuild is in my future.
  3. I went out this morning to start the bike to leave for church. Then I noticed the left pipe smoking like nobody's business. I immediately thought oh crud, my bike is messed up big time. I decided to ride anyway, and about 5 mins into my ride it hit me... Oh yeah, I am using seafoam. Feel much better now and it was not smoking when I got to church.
  4. Anybody ever carry a bass guitar or something similar on their RSV? I am thinking that putting it in the passenger seat and bungee cording the crud out of it will be the best idea. I eventually want to get a basket for the hitch, but I do not have the $$ right now. Suggestions? the bass is in a hard case, so damage to it is unlikely. however having it stick up to the top of my antennas is going to cause drag.
  5. Thanks XV, Tires are on order. new set of E-3s for $522 installed...Ouch. I will do all the petroleum based fluids once I get her running 100% good. I have the fuel filter which will go in after a few more tanks of gas. I will also do the plugs at that time and since I am there, I will clean the carbs and sync them. It is starting to run much smoother, I have backed the throttle screw off a lot and I no longer have to run around with the choke on. I need to get a tach so I can set the idle properly instead of by ear/feel. original price of this bike keeps going up and up. Good thing I just got promoted at work.
  6. I went out to my bike this morning to ride into church and the bike started and ran for a few moments and then it died. I tried and tried to get it to start. Finally i left and got in the mini van with my Christian Biker shirt on. Half way to church it hits me...petcock. I have been riding for 9 years and have done this one time before.
  7. Can't do that one. My best friend's wife is Melody and everybody calls her mel. Best friend might kill me for that.
  8. antenna's fixed. probably still runs like poo. it has been basically not ridden for 3 years. next weekend I will be pulling her apart and cleaning/syncing carbs, replacing/relocating fuel filter. Antenna works for a name. I am also a Radar technician so I work on antennas for my job.
  9. I have never winterized a bike ever. I have only ridden in Texas, Oklahoma and now Nevada. I have always ridden year round. Next year plan to head south for the winter.
  10. I cranked the throttle set screw pretty far and the bike is running great now. good temporary fix until I get the problem sorted out.
  11. Darn it Goose!! everybody body else was getting my hopes up with less work needed to fix this issue. You did say I seem to be mechanical so i guess with that compliment, we can still be friends. Here is a bike I did a few years back. Before, during and after. I like to think of myself as mechanical. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/coffeyR6/Bobber%20Project/April120119.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/coffeyR6/Bobber%20Project/IMG_6575.jpg http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/coffeyR6/Bobber%20Project/IMG_7355.jpg
  12. Thanks for all the replies, you guys rock. And yes I am going to subscribe, but I hate to waste free days. Put the stock pipes back on her this morning then went for a 45min ride. the bike was great at speed. I even pushed the choke back in. came back into the town, forgot that choke was in and it died. oops. Also my fuel gauge does not work. it was full this morning and then all the bars just disappeared. No big deal seeing as I have never had a fuel gauge before, but I just wanted to make sure ya'll had all the info on my bike.
  13. Sea foam in. I let her idle for a while after rocking the bike back and forth to stir up the fuel. I could not rev her up or anything like that. Stupid aftermarket pipes. I'll take her out tomorrow and ride her hard.
  14. Just got her today and have not picked a name for her yet. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/coffeyR6/Mobile%20Uploads/image.jpg 2001 RSV only 9K miles. She's not running well right now, but I will nurse her back to health.
  15. I know, I feel like there should be a place where I can turn the previous owner in for neglect. I will more than double the mileage in my first year of owning her. I will seafoam her tomorrow morning.
  16. I'll try that then. I did ride it for a while today. so I do not think they are completely blocked, or at least not all of them.
  17. I'll pull the tank tomorrow and clean the carbs. Sucks that I just filled her up. I'll go ahead and replace the fuel filter while I am at it. Hopefully that clears her up.
  18. Just bought my bike today. 2001 RSV with only 9K miles. I cannot put the choke back in with out the bike dying. I have to rev the heck out of it to get it to take off in 1st. It tries to dies when the throttle is at less than a quarter. I have looked around on here, and I think it is the fuel pump, but I wanted some opinions.
  19. ouch! I drive a prius, and I always drive well above and beyond the speed limit. As a fellow rider I always give bikes plenty of room. That being said... I hate prius drivers too. they give me a bad name.
