  1. OK. Just did the A/C stator tests. All legs 57 VAC at 2100 rpm. Also read Jeff Borowski's write-up and saw how to do the RR test. I'm gonna try to attach pics of my notes for the RR and stator test results. Other than getting .7 ohms on the stator legs, looks like the RR is probably the issue. Hope it ain't both.

    Another pic.

That 2007 model was my dream bike for retirement. But we adopted kids, so I got my '88 VR instead. It's all good.
  3. I don't have a Fluke or better meter here. This one's a less expensive GB meter that I've used for years in my electrical business. Touching meter leads did read zero before starting the stator test, so this meter is probably good enough to read down that low in ohms. I had already done the infinite ohms test with RR disconnected. Yeah, had infinite to ground on all three legs. Hadn't done the running engine a/c test yet. Probably this afternoon. Before I started all this, my bike would indicate output of almost 13v, but only when revved about 4grand for several seconds. But my 1988 VR indicates about 13.50 at idle. I rarely, rarely, use heating clothing, and don't have driving lights or other accessories installed on the MM. Just the led brake light bar. Got a new DEKA battery coming to replace this DEKA I'm running now. My current battery tests good but is 4 1/2 years old. So I'm gonna get that new one installed before I buy anything else.
  4. It's funny that that link states that this stator offered works for a 2000 Venture, but is not compatible with a 2000 MM Venture. But they do offer free shipping.
  5. Thanks, Wayne and Ray. Ray, I read your posts from your own experiences. Chasing these charging issues can be such a maze. Glad you got good results. And thanks for taking us along for your journey to charging-fix-it-land. $28.51 shipping? I know stators are heavy, but to me, that's a lot of shipping costs. Oh, well. I agree with y'all to pay the good money for good product. Don't wanna go in there twice. Just saw the one from Rick's and another offered at Buckeye. Looked to be similar in their promises of increased output. Didn't know which way to go. Bought the VStar parts from Rick's and was satisfied. I do know what to expect with the change-out. Had to do it on my wife's former VStar650. Funny, but it can't be any harder than getting to this dad-gum stator connector. Lol
  6. Check out pinwall on ebay. Probably won't be able to buy only the grill by itself. Over the years, that's where I have found stuff for my MM.
  7. Just three more inches of lead to the stator connector. That's all a guy needs to keep from having to remove half the bike to get to that dang connector. Now, if I can just remember where all these bolts go. Well, my stator legs all tested even (RR disconnected), but over twice what is normal, 0.7 ohms between all the legs. Oh well, at least I didn't strip this bike down to discover that my stator was just fine and then I would have to chase my low volts charging issue to somewhere else. To the stator store I must go.
  8. Hey Joe. Are you running their HO stator? And are you running a stock RR with it? I think I saw where you had some RR problems with the HO stator. Or maybe I read/remember wrong. Just disconnected my RR and ohm tested my stator. I wish I would have gone to magician school! Would have probably helped a lot getting to that stator connection. Just three inches more on that lead would have been so nice. Anyway, all were even but high, 0.7, on all legs.
  9. Uh, that would be from my old commercial fishing days in the '70s. Never failed me though. Might have to give it a try.
  10. Anyone replaced their RSV stator with one of these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/STATOR-FITS-YAMAHA-ROYAL-STAR-VENTURE-MM-XVZ1300-2000-/291187486778?fits=Model%3ARoyal+Star&hash=item43cc20703a:g:kukAAOSwDk5TvtgV&vxp=mtr If not, then what is recommended? P.S. And I did do quite a bit of research searching on the 2nd gen forum, but really didn't see much of what folks used as replacements. P.S.S. I also see that there are stators listed online for 1999-2007 models and different ones listed for 2008-2013 models. Anyone know what changed? My bike's a 2000. Would a later model stator fit and maybe work better?
  11. Well, if no one saw it happen, it really never did happen, did it? We have all probably experienced that kind of incident at one time or another. But, we keep our secrets. When your dad finds out, he'll probably just laugh till his side splits.
  12. Hey Yammer, Just read this post: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?113537-Electric-Fence-(Oldie-but-Goodie) Was this you're own personal story? Just wondering since I read the comment #2 at the end. Lol.
  13. LOL!! Lots of good responses/suggestions/concerns/warnings/comedy. Don't stop now. Keep 'em coming. Most likely will take some time to cobble (excuse me, I meant to say, "to meticulously engineer") it all together. I think the Briggs will be enough. After letting it rip a bit (and posing some photos/videos for inquiring minds), I'm planning to govern it way down for my boys to ride. It will probably take them a year more of growing before they can really operate it. And yes, it has brakes! Ha!
  14. Rode (and repaired) mini bikes since I could hold them up. Rode my first real motorcycle when I was 13 or 14, an RD350. That was kinda a dumb thing my foster dad did to let me actually pilot that rocket on the highway. First bike I had titled to me was a 1978 SR500 back in 1979. I have a 1979 SR500 now.
  15. So, I did some engine work on a friend's Yamaha and wasn't going to charge him. But he insisted on something. So, he brought me a Tractor Supply Adult Pedal Car that he no longer used. Cool little thing in great condition. But, I live near the mountains and my 4 acre yard has lots of long hills. So, too much work to pedal this thing. So... I remembered I have this old driveway edger with a 3.5hp horizontal shaft Briggs engine and I have this welding machine, old sprockets and chains, etc.,..... Gonna get interesting around here soon. Ha!
  16. The smaller one is a "passenger mute" button. If it fails to get results, hit the larger, more powerful one. It's the "passenger ejection" button.
  17. Maybe you need to get a Gen II keyboard. I've heard they're faster.
  18. More good suggestions. Thanks. Stayed up late last night. Removed and went through the carb and fuel system again. No problems found there. Disconnected and cleaned every electrical connector, fuse, etc. that I could find. Got a sick five year old son here and it's raining a bit today. Gonna try to ride it again tomorrow.
  19. Blew through it easily with just mouth pressure (some would say I was just blowing hot air, as usual).
  20. Yup. Fuel filter is new and checked for good flow.
  21. It's a 1600 pushrod. Dang tough engine. This bike is stock with Vance & Hines Longshots. Another note: The V&H long shots were damaged. The owner sawed them off about even with the rear end of the transmission. He then welded some large washers in the tips of the pipes to give it some backpressure. Idles and accelerates very well like this. Hard to run it without the breather. It won't really take gas without the breather (also stock) in place. I've cleaned many tanks, bike, boat, lawnmower, my 1953 Desoto, with good results. But the only tank I ever coated was on my 1981 XJ650 Maxim back about 1984. Worked well for me then. I've removed this petcock a few times. Each time, both of the pickup stack filters were very clean. My concern is the fuel gauge reading weird sometimes when the bike craps out. I'm going to focus electrically when I get back to looking at it. Today, gotta put the lights on the Christmas tree. Man, I hate that! Why is it always the man's job to hang the lights? LOL Again, keep the suggestions coming. I will post what eventually works for me. I love this forum.
  22. Good points to consider. This engine has one coil for each cylinder. It also has two plugs for each cylinder. Gotta take the take the tank off to get to the inner plugs.
