Help. I have an 86 Venture with 38 thousand miles. I bought the bike last October and have been going over the bike for the past six months performing routine maintenance and non-routine repairs as well as body work and cleaning. I have had it out a few times to check my progress on brakes, etc. I was ready to ride down to the local bike shop to have a Dunlop 491 put on the front wheel in hopes of improving the handling a bit, especially on cracks in the pavement and uneven pavement. When I fired up my machine and put it into first gear the engine quit. This occurred out of nowhere as I had not had a previous starting or shifting problem. Coincidentally I had bled the clutch the previous night to flush out the old brake fluid (and air bubbles) and put in the new. I thought that I might have not gotten all the air out so I bled again with a power bleeder. Still no help. The side stand switch seems okay. I am not sure about the shift switch except that the neutral and gear indicator on the CMS does occassionally flicker or there is often a delay on the indicator as to which gear the bike is in. I still suspect the clutch switch because I also cannot start the bike in gear (with the sidestand up and the clutch handle pulled in all the way to the handle bar). Last night I dissasembled the clutch handle and switch, cleaned up the contacts, got rid of the rubber dust boot on the rod for the hydraulic plunger and tightened things up a bit. I thought this did the trick because I got the bike going from neutral to 1st gear without stalling the engine 2-3 times. Thinking I solved my problem I decided to ride over and see how my buddies were doing installing a water heater in a friend's home when the problem reared its ugly head again as I attempted to start home. It took me several attempts (side stand up/down; roll bike back; pull clutch in and out repeatedly, shift gears, etc.) to finally get going and get home. This morning I read through the service manual (Genuine Yamaha service manual LIT-11616-04-96 which really is short on troubleshooting and illustrations. I think it is a better parts replacement book than troubleshooting guide, but it is the best I've got. Trouble is my manual is short on how to access the shift switch? I am somewhat stumped here, but still inclined to think I have a Clutch switch issue, primarily because I cannot start the bike in gear with the side stand up and the clutch handle pulled in. Any ideas. I need to get her going so I can get my new tire put on and move on to greasing the swing arm and replacing the clutch disks and pressure plates. A poker run is coming and I'd like to play. Thanks.

My 85 VR has never started with the clutch in, the bike in gear and the kickstand up. Its a nitpicking thing for me that I just deal with rather than try to figure it out. Ive tried a few times and now I know that I always have to shift to neutral to start my bike no matter what.

BUT, mine has never ever not started on me, so you issue is a bit more urgent than mine. so Ill just watch some of the answers in here and see what I can learn to get mine fixed.

Ps thanks for posting, so we can all learn from the expereince.

Home page, then click " Forums ' left side.

Then Scroll down to " First Gen Tech Library.

then Guides, Parts Diagrams, Etc.

then " first Gen Service Manuals.

OK, now you can DownLoad the Entire " Service Manual "

Go to Page 7-11, for a Block Diagram of the Entire Starting Circuit, and all the components that are Involved.

Don't worry about what the Shift Indicator Indicates, This would simply be a Seperate problem. ( ie. the Swicth, picks up a ground, for each gear position, sends it to the Indicator, has no effect on starting )

Read thru Everything on page 7-11, There Several Items involved the starting Circuit . Read thru everything on this page.

I would start by cleaning the electrical connects to all the Relays, and the side stand switch. Also, see the Main Schematic, page 8-41, here you will also see all the cable Enroute Plugs, that are involved. More complete then page 7-11.

Also, sounds like you Might have an Start Relay going bad, Maby !

Also, get a spray can of CRC 2-26, Electrical Contact Cleaner, or similiar product, use it on your Ignition Switch, Run Stop Switch, Clutch Switch, Side Stand Switch ,

and All Relays, and Plugs that you see on page 7-11.

Also, carefully check all the Wire Cables located Under the Lft Side Tran case cover. Especially the 2 Wire cable running to the Side Stand Switch.

A lot of us , have simply Hard Wired the Side Stand switch to the " UP " position.

This should get you started,

Sounds like you might have a wire worn thru to Ground someplace, or an Intermittant Open wire.

Thanks Brian. Maybe this thread will bring a solution for both of us. I can start my bike okay I just can't get to 1st gear without killing the engine (this is a new problem that has occurred since I bled the clutch, conincident or not), nor can I start the engine witht the clutch handle in, side stand up and bike in gear (as the book calls for). Let's see what others can tell us. Cheers,

I believe that the switch on the clutch handle is just to kick the cruse off and will have nothing to do with your problem. The switch on your kick stand is probably the problem, if it is reading that your kick stand is down, it will kill the engine if you try to put it in gear. You can not put your bike in gear with the kick stand down. I had mine get sticky and it would even kill mine while I was riding. Lub the heck out of it and work it to see if it will start to work.
