Like I said, there's more but that will have to wait for another trip to the storage unit. I've purchased the bolts and whatnot to mount the gas tank to the frame, but apparantly there's a grommet that's needed that's no longer made that I have to track down. (part #90480-20357-00 ) So hopefully soon I'll have the fuel tank and subframe back on inside of a week time permitting (just had a death in the family two hours ago at time of posting so might have to make a run down to mexico to deal with this). Please I'm begging yu guys any details you can give me on any of these photos of things to toss and things to keep will save me a LOT of time and hassle. I'll post more as soon as I can.

#10 is one of the heat shields that goes just above the engine. the rubber lined slots are for the spark plug wires. You are looking at the top of it. I think that is the front one but I am not 100% certain.

#31 is a chrome wraparound for the trunk

Trust me, I personally asked the previous owner directly and bluntly "did you store this thing outside". His reply was as follows verbatim "I put the bike in the shed, shoved the parts into some tubs and tried to keep them dry but then I had a roof leak and it took a while to get that fixed". I know it looks bad, believe me I've thought of just parting the cursed thing out for the money, but something about this bike says "put me back on the road where I belong". It's for this reason and this reason alone that I haven't said screw it. Like I said, I still have to do another trip back to the storage unit to photograph the other parts that are still in the tub. I remember there being some leather pouches (a little larger than a pack of cigarettes with the venture logo on them). a few microchips? I don't know. Right now I'm just focusin g on getting that tank mounted and the subframe and then I'm hoping from there I can start building up the back end of the bike. I did say this was going to be a proect did I not?

Well, looks like you're in for a LOT of cleaning and refurb! Those engine side covers have some kind of aftermarket plastic bling covering the fact that your plastic louvers are probably broken. From what I can tell on your upper fairing pieces you have a lot of broken mounting tabs. The paint job is not stock. Hard to tell from the pictures but most of the plastic seems to be from an '87 which was gold, not the '86. All plastic is rebuildable and repaintable. Seat could be recovered, but chances are you can find a better one cheaper on Ebay, same for missing lower fairing piece. I'm thinking you will be better served replacing the headlight as there is probably rust stains inside as well!

 

Jeff confirmed what you thought concerning surge tank, battery box, and what the aftermarket trunk and rear light assemblies are. If you explore this site you will find assembly and parts manual to give you an idea what is what...

Where did you see Floor boards? If it was my post I bought them off fleebay they come from a 87 venture royale... And damnnnnnnn just how bad did this guys shed leak.
Picture 5. Those are Markland, I have a pair on my '84. There is another type floorboard that has brackets that bolt onto the bottom of the bike, those Marklands bolt onto the crash bars...

This is a photo of said floorboards from markland for the goldwing. This is what he's referencing from picture 5. I'm not even sure if I want to keep all the gobbledeegook extras or take it back to stock and say screw the mess. From what I can extrapolate from the parts, there was a front fender rail, floorboards on the front engine guards, rider floorboards, the cage on the back, the rider's backrest. I never laid eyes on the shed, but the house and yard weren't in the bast of shape, but it's not something that I typically ask and he had everything laid out on the driveway. The guy's one of those people that is a workaholic so he's not home all that often to attend to the "honey-do" list that usually comes up. But, for a free motorcycle, I knew I was signing on for a project. I've restored Harleys from less (79 superglide that had the jugs off, water in the crankcase, drivechain had been dragging on the street because it "looked cool", exhaust hanging on by a coat hanger twist, Spark plug wires off of an old Chevy, Handlebars were made from god knows what. I was never able to reconcile how Harleys, bmw, ducati,triumph are worthy of restoration but other bikes are relegated to "just throw it in the crusher".

Yah, those are similar, but the ones for the venture are more rounded than pointy, as you can tell from the one I saw in the picture. BTW passenger floorboards are stock on the MK2 ('86 - '93) but only pegs for the MK1. The K2 boards can be bolted up on the MK1 but you have to fabricate a set of hangers for the exhaust, and use a spacer or washer on the one big bolt...

Yeah I discovered that after I bought them, that was the only complaint that came from the warden she did not like them pegs. Now to get me some Highway Boards on the crash bar. I got some plastic spacers washers etc from True Value Hardware. Got lots of stuff on this bike from Hardware store My faulse tank lid screw tabs broke so got allen head bolts and nuts and got it all fixed up nice. Now to get rid of the ducktape for my coolant/cubby door.

Okay some progress made today, fuel tank is installed and subframe is KINDA installed? I'll explain about the subframe in a moment here.

So here's where I'm semi hesitant...These two bolts (uppers for the subframe)are being an absolute P.I.T.A. to get in. Is this normal? With the amount of rust, I'm tempted to get the tap out and try to cut the rust out since I'm under the impression that things should more or less just line up and the bottom bolts line right up, take the correct amount of space with washer and bolt equipped to fit as intended. There's rust on the threads which is what makes me think that the tap is going to need to be broken out and clean the threads or maybe some lubricant.

I hope to have photos of the finished item tomorrow. On page 2 of this thread, Snyper316 showed a bracket in the photo that I know I've seen and is probably in the tub. Can someone please explain to me the purpose of this bracket, where it goes, what it does. I can't locate much pertaining to this in the technical manual, but boy if I had problems with the motor I would have zero issues, but when it comes to the frame, luggage, windshield, fairing, there's not a lot of information there.

That bracket is for the front tab of your seat and the retaining screw for your Faux Tank Cover mainly. There is two clips on your gas tank that your black plastic fender to slide into also.

Just got back from the storage unit. I do not have that bracket from what I can tell (I was in there for three hours it isn't there) can you please give me the actual name of the bracket?

Alright, seat stay ordered. How many more parts aren't going to be there that I need? Also went up to O'reilly auto parts and came across a rust removal item called evaporust. I'm going to use it on my nut problems (no pun intended) on the frame/subframe connections when completed.

I feel your pain. Just bought one ad I am learning as I go along. Mine is and 88 looks like yours but it runs. Was told it needs a lil tlc thats all. Good luck with your Bike

Well, i know my motor turns over, unfortunately, I still have to redo the wiring harness (Yay me), unstick the carbs, reattach the overflow tank for the coolant, get a new air filter, get a battery, redo the brakes (front and rear), make sure the clutch is functional, reconnect the c.l.a.s.s. suspension, drain and replace the fork oil, swap out the oil and filter, swap out the shaft drive fluid, thankfully I live in texas, and riding season is practically year round so it's a blessing and a curse. The nice thing (for me at least is that it's not a 'wing, it's not a harley and it was free)

Too bad you don't live closer I have 2 gallons left after buy 3 gallons. I used nuts,bolts, and 3 gallons of evaporust in my gas tank and boy did it clear that tank out. Which I would say toss three gallons of it in your tank throw the nuts and bolts in it. Then every 4 or so hours go out and shake the crap out of the tank and rotate it. Just make sure you plug the hole's I lost a gallon forgetting that. I did that for a week straight with my gas tank but I actually went and bought a package of ten nuts and ten bolts. Funny thing tho only 9 nuts came out and the other nut ran off. :confused24: I'm dead serious. It is not in the tank.:rotf::rotfl::rotf::rotfl:
