Anybody have experience on Road Star?

There's a 2007 Road Star Silverado on craiglist for 18k miles. It looks good and seems to be well-maintained. I'm interested to buy it.

Does anybody have experience with 1700 Road Stars? How does it fare compare to RS/RSTD/RSTC/RSV in terms of:

- reliability

- handling

- power

- fuel consumption (i.e. mileage)

- comfort

- ease of maintenance

- spare parts availability

Thanks in advance, this site rocks!

I bought an 05 Road Star Silverado for step son back in 05.

It ran like a dream, and had lots of torque. Very dependable as all the Yamahas are.

Easy to work on too..

Step son changed out stock pipes on it and I couldn't stand hearing it....

Always made him ride behind me...:whistling:

Reliability: just as good as Royal Stars. I've had 4 Royal Stars.

Handling: Better in town than RSV and Tour Deluxe. Does well on highway.

Power: More than enough!

Fuel: I get around 40 mpg

Comfort: Excellent but need aftermarket seat.

Maintenance: easy. Changing oil was easy.

Spare parts: I am outfitting mine with chrome Craigslist finds. Plenty to be had!

Hope that helps!

Had 2000 model and put 65000klms(3 years). Loved it .Same comments as others about mileage/ performance etc.Had aftermarket seat on it which helped.

Check out the web-site for the bike---almost as good as this site for imformation etc.

Thank you guys, your comments are greatly appreciated.

How about the heat? Road Star is air cooled, so while it handles better than Royal Star in town, there's plenty of stop-and-go, not to mention traffic jams. Is heat a concern or not at all?

I haven't noticed heat but I don't ride in heavy traffic.

I looked at the bike yesterday. It had Vanes Hines pipes so it sounded RRRReally good, and plenty of torque. But it vibrated more than my Royal Star. It was nice for short range and get people's attention :) but I can't see myself in it for a long range. I guess I'll be happier on a RS/RSV.

I bought a 2001 in 2005, it had 4000 miles.

I put 50,000 miles in 3 years. Sold it to my son-in-law at family price.

I replaced it with a 06 RSTD. Seemed like such a bigger bike.

I later rode the Road Star, seemed small. Guess I got used to bigger.

Now I have a RSV and call my RSTD the "little bike".

Enjoyed the Road Star (1600) a lot. It made me realize that after a 4 hour trip, I wanted to ride MORE. Wife was never comfortable on the pillion,, not for more than a half hour.

I kept monkeying with it, Big Air kit and such. Wish I had just left it alone.

Ended up getting sticky valve and when I sold it, told my son-in-law he should think of a valve job. Got hard to run in winter.

Anyhow, he has only put 1500 miles on it in 5 years. He never did the work. Not sure it even starts. Think he is doing it at home,,, next year,,,,,.

As you already have a Royal, it could make a good solo bike for you. Good spunk, good in the mountains.
