timgray Posted October 21, 2012 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2012 Ok what would cause the Odometer to work perfect but the speedo stay at 0? Is there a fix or do I need to find a used speedo and try to get the odo set to the right numbers?
MiCarl Posted October 21, 2012 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2012 The odometer is gear driven. The speedo moves by a magnet spinning inside an aluminum cup. The shaft hangs in tiny bearings, just like the moving parts in a watch. Doesn't take much to gum them up. A bit of cleaning and lubrication may solve your problem. Insect nest or spider web will lock it down tight.
Dmnordin Posted October 21, 2012 Share #3 Posted October 21, 2012 I have a couple of '83 instrument clusters if you can't get yours working. It's not too bad swapping out the speedometer. Doug
timgray Posted October 21, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted October 21, 2012 How much do you need for a instrument cluster? always good to have parts on hand when I open things up for repair.
spitfire9 Posted October 25, 2012 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2012 I have an 85 speedo I could send you next week for shipping costs, if you still need one. Came with a cluster I bought for a CMU, and I have never used the speedo. Probably works, though. Let me know if interested.
GeorgeS Posted October 25, 2012 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2012 Pull out the Instrument cluster, open it, clean the Speedo parts, also be sure to pull out the drive cable, and clean and lubricate it. Most likely a good cleaning, and lubrication job will fix it up OK. Good time to also replace all of the Instrument cluster light bulbs !! While your in the area, be sure clean all the connectors on the Plugs for all the relays located in that area.

I am interested, in fact I'm interested in the whole thing minus a CMU or even the other meters. I have an idea that I would like to work on that needs the dash cluster. timgray Posted November 1, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted November 1, 2012 First thing I checked when I noticed it, then I noticed the Odometer was still ticking away miles.... So that means the cable is good. I do need to give it a good cleaning though.
