Jack Daniel Posted November 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 21, 2010 Hello. I've just bought 98RSTD from a private party. The bike sat in his garage idle since 97. I had the carbs worked/plugs/fluids and it runs fine except it'll shut off without warning even down the freeway at 65mph. The lights don't go out. After you stop it'll start back up just fine, but it'll do it again. Anyone had anything like this?. Thanks, P.S I'm new to VR.
RandyR Posted November 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2010 Sounds like 1 possibiliy could be the kickstand interlock. I believe there's a post here about how to jumper around that to verify if that might be your issue. Welcome to VR.prg

LilBeaver Posted November 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2010 Fuel Filter? Fuel Pump? Trash/Gunk in the tank or petcock tubes? ^^^^ My thoughts too. By the way, if you post where you are in Texas (city-wise) we may have a member or two close enough to come help you take a looksey if you need/want some help troubleshooting this. -- Just a thought. pegscraper Posted November 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted November 22, 2010 The ignition switches on these bikes were known for causing this kind of trouble. Work the key back and forth a bit each time you turn it on and see if that alleviates the trouble.
SteveW Posted November 22, 2010 Share #7 Posted November 22, 2010 I will second the ignition switch Had a bad one on my 97 and my friends 96 did it two. Sometimes you would ride and it would just shut down. Other times you would shut it down and nothing when you went to restart. Turn it off and on a few times and it would start right up. chris fulgenzi Posted July 19, 2013 Share #8 Posted July 19, 2013 my kill switch had a short in it and did that. also I agree with the kick stand switch. when you hit a bump, it makes the kick stand drop a little and she quits. PB BLASTER !!!! the food of the gods !!!! lol it fixes everything...
