Aussie Annie Posted August 21, 2009 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2009 Has anyone else had a problem with rust on the base of their aerial? Spotted the rust on the weekend. Is the best way to remove using fine paper then polishing?
BuddyRich Posted August 21, 2009 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2009 Mine does it to. I just use fine steel wool on it.
spear Posted August 21, 2009 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2009 Mine does it to. I just use fine steel wool on it. Then smear either a bit of white (aviation) grease or petroleum jelly on it. (I was going to say Vaseline, Annie - but people might get the wrong idea.)

Guest wrench Posted August 21, 2009 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2009 Both antenna bases on mine rusted to the point of not cleaning up with anything. I slipped some heat-shrink tubing over mine just to hide them. I noticed the other day that the mounting brackets are also rusting. I'll get them powder coated black along with my muffler brackets and hitch this winter. If your bike is still under warranty, they will replace them, but my dealer said that Yamaha had to visually "inspect" them first before they would replace them, which meant taking them off and sending them to California. I'm planning on adapting a pair of black H/D Ultra antenna's to mine.
