Schlepporello Posted March 11, 2009 #1 Posted March 11, 2009 OK, so when I bought my brake pads, I figured I'd see what a new oil filter would cost. Then not thinking the price was too outrageous, I bought one. My local thievery shop sold me a #1J7-13441-10 filter. Then later, while looking through the parts catalog for my '84 VR, I noticed that the recomended filter number is #1J7-13440-91-00. So I took the filter back today to get the correct filter and was told that the old number had been replaced with this "New" number. Personally, I think the parts man behind the counter was smoking crack. In the service manual, there's supposed to be a rubber ring gasket, this "new" numbered filter has none, nor does it have a place for one. What say ye?

It was still pricy 11 bucks but was the right one. try walmart. The US stores have lots of good stuff and a great price. I bought 6- 2nd gen filters (supertech I think) for around 1.99 each! 84xj1100 Posted March 11, 2009 #6 Posted March 11, 2009 Schlepporello, Sarges46 is quite right.....the Fram CH6002 is what yer lookin for.....$11 bucks though - that must be with taxes incl (I get mine for 9...at Cdn Tire, neither here nore there though). Included is two o-rings....one for the filter ?housing?, part the filter sits in...and one for the bolt that holds it on. Recommendations/food for thought: 1. Use them both = replace both O-rings...you paid for them 2. The large O-ring can be a pain to get it to seat in the housing especially if you take it directly out of the box and attempt to use it. What I do prior to an oil/filter change, is take the pkg with the o-rings in it and remove it from the box, spread it out for a while. That way it's not kinked from being shoved in the box and hard to work with. Good Luck Ed

When I bought one at the Stealer, they gave me a filter for $11.99 a large O ring for $10.00 and the small o ring for $3.95 Many dealers will strip out the O rings from the yamaha filter boxes and sell them to you separately to further rob you blind. My first oil change on my 83 venture cost me $75.00 with yamalube and yamafilterparts. sarges46 Posted March 11, 2009 #9 Posted March 11, 2009 You are right Randy...we pay through the nose for bike stuff here. I do almost all of my buying from a US dealer of some sort. Even with extra shipping and sometimes a charge at the border...it comes out cheaper than home. Whenever we head south for a trip we pick up small things....seafoam...filters...oil. Big things I ship to Russell if I have the time to wait for them. He visits his family up this way and I usually meet him for food and a visit and exchange of parts. There is also a business just south of the "gate" at the border that I can ship stuff to if in a hurry and I can drive down to get it. Our next purchase will be a manual tire changer...the only shop in town that changes tires charges us around a 100 bucks for a set. That is the cost of the changer itself! There are a lot of things in Canada that you pay a lot more for than here in the US (and I'm not boasting, just stating fact). Being a very active member on my favorite tuba forum, I hear horror stories about how much tubas cost in Canada all the time. For instance, 5 years ago I paid $5000 for a new tuba here in the US (Miraphone 187). You wanna calculate how much that same tuba would have cost in Canada were I to have bought it from a stealership there? And our Canadian kinsmaen who wish to sell the tubas they have so they can move up to a higher quality tuba can't sell their horns here unless they're willing to take a major bath. It can make a tuba player's head spin. Enough rabbit chasing. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.
MiCarl Posted March 11, 2009 #11 Posted March 11, 2009 According to the parts fiche 1J7-13441-10-00 is the correct filter. Some digging shows me that that filter does indeed supersede the 1J7-13440-91-00. The Yamaha filter does not include the o-rings, the dealers aren't removing them. That's why I usually use WIX or Fram filters. The good news though is the o-rings don't need replacement every oil change. If you know the o-rings on your scoot are fairly new just use the Yamaha filter. If they are old or unknown pick up the Fram or WIX filter and use the Yamaha filter for your next oil change.

GeorgeS Posted March 12, 2009 #14 Posted March 12, 2009 Most auto parts store's can order the filters for you. Just cross the Motorcycle. Fram, Wix, and maby other brands. Much cheaper then yamaha. I usually order 3 of them once a year. Always have on hand that way. Fuel filters, also, can be had at auto parts stores.
Schlepporello Posted March 12, 2009 Author #15 Posted March 12, 2009 I went to Advance Auto this morning and they had 3 of the Fram filters on the shelf, and $2 cheaper than what the Yamaha filter cost me too! I went ahead and grabbed one so I could have a referance to compare the "new" Yamaha filter with and it appears that if there is a difference,it's ever so slight. The benefits of the Fram filter from Advance Auto is that it came with the rubber gaskets whereas the one from the stealership did not. I'll go ahead and use up both of them.
