Need some Black Hills info

I have been reading this post with great enthusiasm and now have to refocus some of our plans. I love the road less travelled as well....I just gotta talk the kids into it as well.

We have stayed several times at Cadillac Jacks Hotel and Casino in Deadwood. It has a secured underground parking lot which is nice for bikes and trailers. We had a room on the street side and saw our vehicles from the room which was also nice. They have a really nice hotel, and a nice cafe with great daily specials. The Bloody Marys from the bar are the best we have ever had. And a short walk into the town for the old west stuff which was entertaining. Tin Lizzy has a burger that is also fantastic! Short ride to Custer State Park. Check out the begging burrows which are usually at the entrance. Met a van full of "Old hippies" who brought the kids, grandkids and g-grandkids to the one area every week to eat and watch a herd of elk. Very unique folk. Been coming to the same spot for decades with the family. Needles highway is a must. Don't be too disappointed by the "Heads" as it is now covered by concrete and tourists. But the awe and wonder are still there once you get past the parking garage. You'll see what I mean. This is my favorite area to visit. Just a short ride to Sturgis, Custer, "Heads" Needles, Badlands (which could take a week alone) and Devils tower. And they have "killins on the streets" in Deadwood. Take your camera everywhere!

Thanks for the info on Deadwood. I suppose we'll try and check it all out - as much as we can in 4 days. I wanted to go to the Black Hills mostly for the riding and natural sites and wanted to avoid the Bike Week crowds. My wife wants to go mostly because she gets paid vacation & it's better than going to work for a week. LOL Neither of us gamble or drink (much) and I try avoid crowds & tourists as much as possible. I'll suffer thru to see the Big Heads.

 

We have casinos & shows in WI - my long range plan is to ride to and thru every state (and province), just to see the unique and natural beauty that is there before God calls my number (I think I'm #666). The ride to Hawaii is probably going to be the most difficult. LOL Assuming I'm still vertical and above ground in 5 years, and the world hasn't been struck by a giant meteor or something - I want to take about 3 - 4 weeks & ride to & around Alaska. Never been and I want to go before I get to old and feeble to be able to go there on the bike. So anyone that wants to ride along, all the way or part of the way - pencil it in - summer 2014. I didn't figure I'd have to kidnap you, Rick - I was just gonna ask if you wanted you to go.

The better 1/2 and I decided to take our summer ride in the Black Hills this year during last week in June. We wanted to spend a few days in the Hills, riding around and checking out the countryside. Any info on "must-see" places, (besides the big heads, of course), roads to ride, spots for the best scenic vistas, quiet motels (or motels to avoid), tourist traps to avoid, etc. etc. would be appreciated. We were looking at going to Wind Cave and Jewel Cave - are they worth seeing?

 

On the way back to WI, we are thinking of going thru ND - is there anything in ND...................anywhere................worth seeing? :-) Thanks

If you are looking for a different way to the hills, maybe try U.S. hwy 212. It runs all the way across So.Dak. Won't have all the tourist traps. A great place to eat on the way is Bob's steak house. Located on east bank of missouri river(west of Gettysburg S.Dak). Dont know if they are open for noon lunches etc. Steaks are huge! They use local beef. One thing to remember is to fill with fuel in Eagle Butte ( first town west of missouri river). Not much between Eagle Butte and the hills. When you get out to the hills, you'll come out in a town called Belle Fourche. It is only about 10 miles north of Sturgis, on the north end of the black hills. I live in NE So. Dak., never taken that road on the bike, but quite a few times in the car. The road is fairly well traveled. lots of truckers use it. It may be a bit too far north for you, but it is an alternative to the interstate. I forgot, you can also fill with fuel in Faith as well. Just remember anything west of the Missouri river is cowboy country, few and far between. If you want to see the open prarie, thats a good route for you. Hope this helps!
