TAKE THE MONEY! Do what you can. Decide what damage you can live with if any. Get some friends with motorcycle repair experience to help you do the things that you don't feel comfortable fixing yourself and let Yamaha fix the rest. You may even save your deductible and make a little money.

Well, it appears that most of the damage is from the bolt-on's. Light, windshield, front fender, left engine guard and lower fairing, left running board/shifter etc., tank scratches, left bag scratches, etc....

I am a pretty good mechanic, with an eye for detail... so it seems to me that the better way to go might be to take the money and bring the bike home...

Another thing to consider - if you are like m, It will take you quite a while to put it back together - the shop would probably have it back in 2-3 weeks and you would be back to riding. If they give you the money, are they considering it totaled? (Doesn't sound like it) Would it have a salvage title(Doesn't sound like it) Did the estimate give you a itemized parts list? I know they get high quick - I hit a dog and had the right lower fairing, right drivers floorboard, front crash guard, and the 2 inner fairing pieces replaced - it was over $850. So I am betting that bid includes replacing everything that was scratched. I know you are mechanical enough to fix it and do good work (I've been watching the fairing).

HERE'S AN IDEA! :yikes: You could take the money, sell the bike, buy a new venture and just ship that fairing over this way!! That works out good for both of us!!:scared:

I will keep you in mind for the fairing :thumbsup2: - not 100% which way I am going to go - but that fairing just might be available.....

OK - I have decided to have the shop repair the bike. Ran it around in my head for a couple of days and although I "might" have fared better doing it myself....I just don't have the time right now. Wife is having surgery on her finger Monday (from the laydown) and I will need to take care of her for a few days..

Dealer said that I do get to keep all the parts that are replaced - so I will have a front fender, tank, and left hard-bag with only scratches to sell! That will help.

I am pretty sure that my wife will never get on this bike again - so I am going to sell it when it is back in pristine condition, and most likely look for another bike. So, if you know anyone interested in a 2007 with about 4500 miles - let me know :thumbsup2:. It will be "perfect" or the dealer will get it back until it is!

I would also be interested in a good trade of equal value...I am going to go with something with a little lower center of gravity and lower seat height this time around.

Thanks for all your help in this matter.

My insurance is in case I hit someone else.

It's a different mindset, I don't buy new and for many years I've been able to afford to lose any bike that I've got (though I don't want to !). To be honest, it would be difficult to argue that my bikes are worth a fortune and that means that thieves round here pay them little attention.

Oh and I value my twenty years' no-claims bonus. Even though I get a good deal on bike insurance, I've still paid plenty over those years. I think I'm with a good company (Carole Nash) anyway, even though they're very competitive.

I have a Road Star with a Mustang seat in addition to my RSV. Great bike with a lot lower center of gravity especially with the Mustang seat. Great bike!. However I don't know how deep your pockets are but the Stratoliners I've set own feel unbelievably light. I guess it is the aluminum frame. I went with the Road Star because of all the aftermarket stuff you can put on them. The Stratoliners have a lot more accessories available now than they use to. One more rumor. I heard that in 2010 Yamaha was coming out with some new models? How many and what type I don't know. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I just got back from the dealer - looking at an 06 Stratoliner that the guy had chromed - EVERYTHING . Felt nice and low slung...

Three guys in our club have 06 Stratoliners and they all love them. Plenty of power, great handling motorcycles. The only thing I am aware of is they had a recall on the 06 I believe. One of our members wrecked his because they had not had the recall at the time. I think it had to do with the throttle cable sticking or the bike accelerating on its own or something like that. Check with Yamaha to find out exactly what the recall was for and make sure the 06 your looking at either came out after the fix or make sure it had the fix. Sorry I can't be more specific but since I don't own one I didn't keep up with it.

Well folks - I decided to trade in the wrecked RSTD for an 06 Stratoliner "S" in immaculate condition. I will definitely check into the recall - thanks for that tip.

I have posted elsewhere that I will have some awesome parts for sale for an 07 RSTD also.

Thanks for all the information and help that was given - it is greatly appreciated.

Hey Shep I doubt if you can swing it but since the damage is to the left side if you can get the right engine guard let me know I would be very interested in it.

Man, if I could - I would - but they are going to fix it up and sell it - si I was blessed to even get the parts back that I did.

YamaDuck - I have a right engine guard -06 TD. Has a tiny scratch/scrape where it hit the floorboard. (I hit a dog and it got pushed back. I pushed it back into place and it seemed fine but, since the owner of the dog was paying to fix everything, I went ahead and had it replaced.) Interested?

Hey Mountainhorsega. Yes if your sure it's not bent I'm interested. I don't know much about the RSTD are you sure the engine guardss are the same? The one on my RSV has a pretty big scrape on the bottom of the engine guard but you cant see it. The lower right and left fairing don't match that well because it's bent a little. About a 1/4" space between the two pieces.

I really enjoyed this. where can I find more info about this. email me..

For those of you that have been through having your bike repaired through an insurance claim:

1. How does it work?

2. Will they "low ball" or fix it back to "good as new"?

3. Will they replace the "after market" stuff?

4. Will I have any "say so" in anything? Like, "Hey that part needs to be replaced!"

5. Will I have an option of keeping any of the old parts?

I am with State Farm and have full coverage.

Thanks for any help. The bike is in the shop and I am awaiting an "estimate".

When I hit the dog, the owner wanted to pay(Once he found out it was going to be $800). I took it to one shop who took it apart and listed every part that was scratched, dented or might be a problem. Another shop didn't even take anything off and only identified 2 parts (vs. the 8 the first shop listed) A lot of it depends on the shop have do the estimate.
